Next Phase of Lally Athletics Complex Construction to Get Underway - Syracuse University Athletics (cuse.com)

The momentum continues for the renovation of the home of the Orange—the John A. Lally Athletics Complex. Following approval from the Syracuse University Board of Trustees, construction will commence on a new Football Operations Center and the "One Team" Olympic Sports Center, the latter of which will become home to all Syracuse student-athletes.

"Syracuse University is committed to excellence in every aspect of the student experience," says Chancellor Kent Syverud. "For our student-athletes, that means providing them with the kind of environment that supports excellence on and off the fields of play. That's the aspirational vision for the Lally Athletics Complex and it's exciting to see it move forward with the support it deserves."

The Lally Athletics Complex is the state-of-the-art academic and athletic village that is receiving enthusiastic support from philanthropic donors and Orange fans inspired by the vision of creating an unbeatable student-athlete experience. The complex serves more than 600 student-athletes across 20 teams.

"This is a critical step toward the creation of an academic and athletic village for every Syracuse student-athlete," says Director of Athletics John Wildhack. "The Lally Athletics Complex is all about providing a best in class experience. We are grateful for the support from the Board of Trustees, our donors and supporters."

Syracuse University shows off plans for football and Olympic sport performance centers (PS; $; Carlson)

Syracuse University released renderings on Monday showing off plans for upgraded areas that will be dedicated to its football and Olympics sports programs.

The school said that the next phase of construction on the John A. Lally Athletics Compex will include operations centers for both its football program and its non-revenue sports.

An e-mail from Pete Sala to the campus community earlier this month said that preliminary work on the projects would begin in June. The target date for the football facility to be completed is December of 2024.

The release from the school said that the football operations center improvements will include areas dedicated to sports medicine and recovery, a new cafeteria and nutrition space, as well as a new locker room, position meeting rooms and coaches’ offices. It will also include spaces that are utilized on recruiting visits.

The “One Team Olympic Sports Center” will include more sports medicine spaces for non-revenue athletes, as well as areas dedicated to recovery, nutrition and lounge spaces.

Lounge

A rendering released by Syracuse University shows plans for a lounge that will be part of the upgraded spaces in the John A. Lally Athletics Complex.

The release said that the entryway to the football operations center will be named the Little Atrium after SU football great Floyd Little. The name is the result of a $5 million pledge from Howard and Louise Phanstiel, who are financial supporters of the school’s athletic and academic programs.

The sports lounge in the Olympic Sports Center will be named by long-time athletics and university booster Joyce Hergenhan, who donated $2 million to the project.

ESPN FPI ranks ACC, predicts final record for every team in 2023 college football season (on3.com; Connolly)

The perception nationally is that Florida State has surpassed Clemson as the team to beat in the ACC.

The Seminoles have a higher win total than Clemson and are the favorite to win the league, according to DraftKings.

However, ESPN FPI still has the Clemson Tigers as the team to beat in the ACC. Clemson has a projected win total of 10.3, while Florida State is at 8.7.

Overall, Clemson is No. 8 in the ESPN FPI, while Florida State ranks No. 14. North Carolina is the only other team in the top 25 from the conference at No. 25.

As for the College Football Playoff, FPI gives Clemson a 24.4 percent chance to make the CFP. FSU is well behind the Tigers at 4.4 percent, while everyone else in the league has a less than 1 percent chance to reach the playoff.

Below are the ACC teams ranked by the ESPN Football Power Index, followed by the projected win-loss records for 2023.

ESPN FPI ranks ACC football teams in 2023

1. Clemson — FPI: 19.4, Record: 10.3-2.3

2. Florida State — FPI: 15, Record: 8.7-3.5

3. North Carolina — FPI: 10.2, Record: 8.2-4.2

4. Miami — FPI: 9.1, Record: 7.8-4.5

5. Syracuse — FPI: 7.6, Record: 7.5-4.6

6. Pittsburgh — FPI: 7.5, Record: 7.1-5.2

7. NC State — FPI: 7.3, Record: 7.4-4.7

8. Louisville — FPI: 5.1, Record: 6.9-5.2

Disrespectful that Vegas Thinks Syracuse is a 6-Win Team? (orangefizz.net; Amendolara)

The preseason win totals are out for Bet Online, and Syracuse fans will see either a boost in credibility or a classic case of disrespect. The oddsmakers have pegged 6 1/2 wins as the team’s over/under, meaning a bettor needs to decide whether SU will win 7 regular season games or fewer. Over is +100 while under is -130, meaning you’d make more money if you played the over and it hit. Vegas thinks SU is more likely to be a 6 win team. Is it disrespectful that the oddsmakers don’t have more faith in Syracuse following a 6-0 start last year?

The non-con schedule includes Army (H), Colgate (H), Western Michigan (H) and Purdue (A). The home ACC slate sees Clemson, BC and Wake come to the Dome. Plus Pitt is at Yankee Stadium as a “home game.” The road features trips to FSU, UNC, Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech.

As for improved credibility, last year the Orange odds were placed at 4 1/2 regular season wins. So the 7-win campaign, the 6-0 start, the top 25 ranking and making a bowl game all registered with the oddsmakers. Because with the departures to graduation, the portal, and the NFL, the roster this season has lost plenty of talent. Would it be disrespectful to consider Syracuse a non-bowl team?

2025 CB Tavius Horne Jr. reacts to Syracuse offer (247sports.com; Finneral)

Class of 2025 cornerback Tavius Horne Jr. picked up an offer from Syracuse last week. Horne is appreciative of the offer and he enjoys what he has seen from the Orange football program.

“It was overall a great feeling to know that Syracuse was interested in me,” Horne said.

Horne is a promising young prospect from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He has not visited Syracuse yet, but said he definitely plans to in the future. He has been impressed with the Orange coaches and is excited to meet them when he visits.

“Their knowledge and detail of the game jumped out to me,” Horne said.

Horne is a five-foot-11, 160-pound cornerback, who has shown a lot of potential in coverage as well as open-field tackling. He has also earned offers from Colorado, Louisville, Alabama Birmingham and Western Michigan. Horne said Syracuse is definitely high on his list right now.

Jim Brown stood for those who stood against the establishment (yahoo.com; Makin)

Arguably the greatest sportsman of all time left one pastime behind during his transition from high school to college and the pros – baseball. Yet Jim Brown always went to bat for others.

Mr. Brown, who died Friday, marched his way to the record books – and over hapless opponents – as a football star at Syracuse University and the National Football League’s Cleveland Browns. Yet his legacy will be remembered as much for social justice as his athletic feats on Sunday afternoons. Throughout his life, he worked to improve economic opportunities for Black Americans and stood for the dignity of those who challenged the establishment.

All these threads came together most memorably at the Cleveland Summit, also known as the Ali Summit, in 1967.

One year prior, Mr. Brown sought out Muhammad Ali to test his mettle in the ring. Months later, when Ali refused to join the military, Mr. Brown brought together some of the most influential Black athletes in the nation to question him, including Bill Russell and Lew Alcindor (who would later change his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar). They peppered The Greatest with questions to determine the honesty of his position. What resulted was one of the defining moments at the intersection of sports and activism.

10 of Jim Brown’s greatest games from his storied Cleveland Browns career (cleveland.com; Gillis)

Jim Brown’s Hall of Fame career was loaded with performances befitting of one of the greatest running backs in NFL history.

But what were some of his best? Here are 10 standout games from Brown throughout his career:

1957: Week 9 vs. Rams

One of the most impressive outings of Brown’s career, the running back rushed for 237 yards on 31 carries in a 45-31 win over the Rams.

Brown scored on a 69-yard carry in the second quarter, and then scored twice on two 1-yard rushes in the third before a winning 3-yard rush in the fourth.

1958: Week 3 vs. Cardinals

Just before the Cardinals moved to St. Louis, Brown opened the game with two touchdowns to put Cleveland ahead 14-0. A fourth quarter touchdown was the final blow to Chicago.

Brown finished the day with 34 carries and 182 rushing yards — and was backed up by Bobby Mitchell’s 147-yard rushing performance.

1958: Week 5 @ Cardinals

Brown found the end zone four times in a 14-point win over the Cardinals, just two weeks after his 182-yard performance, with a 180-yard outing on 24 carries.

He scored once in the first quarter, twice in the third quarter and once in the fourth quarter to salt the game away.

1959: Week 6 @ Colts

Brown had a historic day against the Colts and Johnny Unitas, as he rushed for 178 yards on 32 carries. But that wasn’t the notable part of his day.

He rushed for a career-best five touchdowns, as he was only aided by a Lou Groza field goal in the first quarter. The Browns certainly needed it, as they escaped Baltimore with a seven-point win.

1961: Week 10 vs. Eagles

His rushing total of 237 yards on this day against the Eagles, paired with his 52 yards receiving, means his performance was one of the best in NFL history — 237 yards is tied for 21st all time for a single game. This was the most total yards he ever gained in a single game in his NFL career.

1963: Week 1 vs. Redskins

Brown opened the season with a stellar day against the Redskins, as his 162-yard rushing performance with two scores was impressive enough. But he added 100 yards receiving, a career-best, on three catches with a touchdown to make his total for the day 262 yards.

The Browns dominated Washington in a 37-14 win.

https://www.si.com/fannation/colleg...sion-realignment-paul-finebaum-acc-sec-rumors (SI; Parks)

Rumors around college football conference realignment and expansion are flying around once again this offseason after it was revealed that seven ACC teams are reportedly looking into possibly getting out of their contract, and speculation around where those teams would land in the event of a move.

Paul Finebaum, a long-time voice around SEC football, doesn't sound like he's interested in the two big ACC brands mentioned in those rumors, Clemson and Florida State, making the move to the Southeastern Conference.

"Clemson to me, quite frankly doesn't bring that much," Finebaum said during an appearance on WJOX in Birmingham.

"I know it brings a national championship program from a couple of years ago. Clemson won twice, but from a geographical standpoint, I don't think they had anything. I think South Carolina already covers the area in that part of the world very well."

Finebaum added, "I think Florida State is similar. I don't think they're nearly as attractive as they think they are. Besides, Florida already covers that part of the world. And so I think Miami to me, it would be next. I think it's an important part of the country. It's a very populated part of the country, too."

The 2023 All-ACC Team is led by 15 selections apiece from Florida State and Clemson, while Pitt, North Carolina, Miami and Wake Forest join the Tigers and Seminoles in double-digit picks.

With the release of the Athlon Sports 2023 College Football Preview Magazine, it’s time to take a look at the best of the best and honor the top players in the league with a release of first, second, third and fourth all-conference teams for '23.

An important note on the all-conference teams: These are based on how players will perform in 2023. Career statistics and awards matter in the evaluation, but choosing players for the 2023 all-conference team is largely based on predicting and projecting the best for the upcoming year. Also, team strength does not play a role in selections. These are the best individual players at each position in the league for '23.

ACC Expansion Tidbit from Brett McMurphy (RX; HM)

ACC Expansion Tidbit from Brett McMurphy

From McMurphy: ACC at Crossroads as ‘Magnificent 7’ Seeks More Revenue

There are some funny parts, like...

It’s gotten to the point where Phillips admitted Wednesday the ACC is trying to remain third among the conferences in media revenue. Forget the gold or silver — the ACC’s hoping to land the bronze medal. “Go ACC! We’re No. 3!” could become the ACC’s rallying cry. Hey, at least it rhymes.

On the other hand, what did you expect, Brett? Nobody's catching the Big Ten or the SEC (except each other), so this is really a race for the bronze, as you say, and it has been for years.

What can the ACC do? Brett gives an interesting factoid...

The only way the ACC can receive significantly more money from ESPN is by expanding. Sources told Action Network that if the ACC adds additional teams — whether from the Power 5 or Group of Five — ESPN contractually must pay the ACC a pro-rata amount for each new member.

Reaction from fanboys of other conferences has been predictable:

Big XII fanboy: Why would anyone join the ACC when everybody knows the Big XII will be making more money (sez me)!
SEC fanboy: so what - it won't help you close the gap with the mighty SEC-SEC-SEC!
Pac-10 fanboy: Hmmm... give us a call!
G5 fanboy: Great! We'll join for 3/4, 1/2, 1/4 share!

One way expansion could help the "Magnificent 7" get a little more unequal revenue is if the ACC added, say, four more schools, but then paid them a reduced share and split the remaining revenue between the existing members. That's exactly what the Big Ten did when it added Nebraska, Maryland, and Rutgers - and what the Big XII did when it added TCU and West Virginia!

However, as large as the ACC already is, even four more teams would most likely only increase the current members’s revenue by a few million dollars a year - and only until the new members earn full shares. Reaction from ACC fanboys has also been predictable:

OT: Problems in B1G Land (RX; HM)

OT: Problems in B1G Land

From ESPN: "How an unfinished TV deal led to an unexpectedly hectic first month for the new Big Ten commissioner", here are some highlights:

Still No Formal Contract

It's great to have a $1 billion verbal agreement, but if you want to collect, there's this little thing you need to do...
...three months before the season kicks off and those TV deals begin, the Big Ten does not have completed longform contracts, which include the fine print details. Instead, Petitti is engaged in significant "horse trading," according to multiple sources, to get the NBC primetime deal finished and figure out what the network calls "outstanding issues" in order to uphold as much value as possible.

Here are some things B1G schools just recently discovered about that big money deal...

How an unfinished TV deal led to an unexpectedly hectic first month for the new Big Ten commissioner (ESPN; Thamel)

When the Big Ten officially introduced Tony Petitti as its new commissioner nearly a month ago, he listed four immediate priorities in his role as one of the most powerful people in college sports.

The league needs to integrate USC and UCLA for the 2024-25 season, explore the new media rights deal for the expanded College Football Playoff and focus on the tricky issue of name, image and likeness.

Lastly, Petitti prioritized the official completion of the massive television contract worth more than $7 billion negotiated by his predecessor, Kevin Warren. This issue may have seemed like a mere formality, but complications to the much-celebrated deal arose soon after he accepted the job.

Twenty questions with UM AD Radakovich: Where Canes stand with ACC, NIL, football, more (yahoo.com; Jackson)

This is an important time for Miami Hurricanes athletics, as UM looks to rebound from a 5-7 football season, grow the pot of money available for NIL contracts and help find solutions to the growing disparity in revenue between the Atlantic Coast Conference and the powerhouse Southeastern and Big 10 conferences.

UM’s athletic director addressed all of that — and more — in a conversation with the Miami Herald. Twenty questions with Dan Radakovich:

Do you expect ACC schools to strike a new revenue distribution deal that would give a greater share of conference revenue to ACC schools that make the College Football Playoff and men’s NCAA Tournament? And are you in favor of that?

“The answer to both questions, I think, is yes. The presidents have a committee that they’re working through. I think there’s a lot of unanimity amongst the athletic directors that some type of success initiatives, success distribution should occur.”

But even if ACC presidents approve this new plan in the weeks ahead, Radavokich said implementation won’t happen this fall.

It’s “not going to happen for the ‘23 season,” he said. “It’s going to be the ‘24 season” because that’s the year the playoff expands from four to 12 teams.

Regarding the issue of schools bolting for conferences where they can make more money, FSU AD Michael Alford reportedly told FSU trustees in February: “We have to do something because we’re a brand. We’re a very important brand, and we drive the media value in this conference.”

Do you believe, regardless of whether you make the College Football Playoff, the same holds true for Miami? In other words, let’s say it was this past year when Miami finished 5-7. Do you believe UM would be one of the schools that deserve more because it is a brand, even if you don’t make the playoff?

“Yeah, I think it’s been shown previously that there are three or four schools — Florida State, Clemson, North Carolina, Miami — who really kind of move the brand awareness of the ACC forward over time and for different reasons.

If ACC splinters, SEC must feast and stick Big Ten with the scraps | Toppmeyer (tennessean.com; Toppmeyer)

Erect the fence, Greg Sankey, and keep the Big Ten off the SEC's lush Southern lawn.

Defending against the B1G northern neighbor should be a key motive for the SEC's commissioner in future realignment moves.

No, the SEC is not at risk of losing members, but the Big Ten might be intrigued by some ACC brands, if they came to market. The SEC can’t sit back and allow covetous yankee paws to cross into the South.

The SEC enjoys college athletics’ catbird seat, but the Big Ten isn’t far behind. In terms of media rights riches, they’re crushing their peers.

That makes those super-leagues desirable destinations for schools in other conferences with a wandering eye. Count several ACC members among those caught peeking.

Seven ACC schools – Clemson, FSU, Miami, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Virginia and Virginia Tech – have examined the bonds of the ACC’s media rights deal, according to multiple reports last week surfacing from the ACC’s spring meetings.

The last thing the SEC or ESPN, its media partner, wants is for the Big Ten thinking it can seize the ACC’s top members.

ACC football coach has a major beef with Coach Prime at Colorado (fansided.com; Buhler)

Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi is not a fan of how Deion Sanders is going about rebuilding his Colorado football program at all.

Pat Narduzzi is a good defensive mind, but an even better complainer.

The outspoken head coach of the Pittsburgh Panthers let it be known during the ACC spring meetings in Amelia Island, Florida last week that he is not down with what Deion Sanders is doing at Colorado. Whether it be Mel Tucker at Michigan State, Lincoln Riley at USC or Sanders at Colorado, Narduzzi clearly despises those who use the transfer portal to their distinct advantage.

Here is what Narduzzi told 247Sports’ Brandon Marcello about what he thinks about Coach Prime.

“That’s not the way it’s meant to be. That’s not what the rule intended to be. It was not to overhaul your roster. We’ll see how it works out but that, to me, looks bad on college football coaches across the country. The reflection is on one guy right now but when you look at it overall — those kids that have moms and dads and brothers and sisters and goals in life — I don’t know how many of those 70 that left really wanted to leave or they were kicked in the butt to get out.”

There is a loophole that allows first-year head coaches like Sanders to flip their roster. Essentially, he is afforded the right to cut players. It stinks for those kids, but he has to transform the worst Power Five program in the country, one that went 1-11 last season. Narduzzi is not afraid to ruffle some feathers with what he says to the media, just like Sanders is going to do his thing in Boulder.

Utica’s F.X. Matt moves into top tier of craft brewers with purchase of Maryland’s Flying Dog (PS; Cazentre)

Utica’s F.X. Matt (Saranac) Brewing, makers of the Saranac line of craft beers and the traditional lager Utica Club, has agreed to purchase Flying Dog Brewing, a large craft brewer based in Maryland.

News of the deal was broken by Brewbound, a site that covers the national brewing industry.

The deal announced today will likely make combined Matt / Flying Dog one of the ten largest craft brewers in the country, according to statistics compiled by the national Brewers Association, based in Colorado.

In 2022, the most recent year analyzed, there were more than 9,500 craft brewers and 9,700 total brewers in the country, the association reported. For that year, the BA ranked Matt as the No. 14 biggest craft brewer and listed Flying Dog at No. 34 based on the amount of beer produced.

The terms of the purchase were not revealed. F.X. Matt was founded in 1888 as the West End Brewing Co. and is the oldest family-owned brewery in New York state.

Flying Dog started in Colorado in 1990 and has built a reputation for quality beers and controversial imagery. Among its best known beers is an IPA called Raging Bitch. Flying Dog acquired the Frederick Brewing Company in Frederick, Md. in 2006, and moved its headquarters there in 2007.

Onondaga County sues New York City to keep migrants out of Salina hotel (PS; Weiner)

Onondaga County filed a lawsuit Monday night against New York City in a last-ditch attempt to stop the transfer of migrants to a hotel near Syracuse’s airport.

The lawsuit filed in state Supreme Court in Onondaga County seeks a temporary restraining order against New York City and the owner of the Candlewood Suites Syracuse Airport Hotel in the town of Salina.

Salina Supervisor Nick Paro said he was informed by a New York City official over the weekend that at least one bus of asylum-seekers would be sent to the local hotel this week for temporary housing.

New York City would pick up the bill for housing, food, security and social services for the asylum-seekers for at least four months.

Onondaga County’s lawsuit claims that New York City has the legal authority only to operate and create temporary shelters for adults within the five boroughs of New York City, not at the Candlewood Suites in Salina.

The lawsuit said that the owner of the extended-stay hotel is clearing out long-term guests to make room for the migrants.

County Executive Ryan McMahon issued an emergency order last week banning such transfers. McMahon said he fears the migrants would eventually become a burden on local taxpayers and social service organizations.

Paro said the town of Salina will file a separate lawsuit Tuesday morning seeking a temporary restraining order against both the hotel and New York City.

Anyone want to take a stab at what Big Ten payouts end up being AFTER they untangle the mess Warren left behind?

I heard it'll cost them $40M total
Sounds like the hoops coaches are really mad because so many of their games will only be available via Peacock (live stream). 8 football games a year, 32 basketball games in 2023-24 and 47 a season from that point to 2029-30.

I guess they forgot to tell them.
