Welcome to National Creativity Day!

National Creativity Day was founded by Hal Croasmun and ScreenwritingU "to celebrate the imaginative spirits everywhere and to encourage them to keep creating." It is a day to nurture your creativity, to be imaginative, and to support the creativity of others. There are all types of creative people, such as artists, writers, photographers, musicians, and filmmakers. But one doesn't need to be an expert in a field in order to be creative—those who just dabble in creative pursuits can benefit from doing so. Kurt Vonnegut once wrote:

The arts are not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven's sake. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possible can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something.

Rising Star Oluwadenemilade Omopariola Ready to Take College Football by Storm! Syracuse University.

https://www.si.com/college/syracuse...ing-2023-juco-offensive-lineman-issiah-walker (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse football extended an offer to 2023 junior college offensive lineman Issiah Walker on Friday. Walker previously signed with Purdue, but received a release from his National Letter of Intent this past week.

"The o-line coach left right after I signed," Walker said. "No one from the staff reached out when it happened. I ultimately found out through a Twitter post."

Since receiving his release, Walker has picked up offers from Colorado in addition to Syracuse. He has an official visit set for Colorado on June 23rd and is currently working on setting one up to Syracuse.

"Working on the date with the o-line coach," Walker said.

The 6-4, 309 pound offensive lineman's recruitment has been an eventful one since high school. He was a four star recruit in the 2019 class at Norland High School in Miami (FL), and signed with Florida over offers from Auburn, Florida State, Kentucky, Louisville, LSU, Miami, Ohio State, Penn State, South Carolina and several others.

Just six months after signing with Florida, Walker transferred to Miami in May of 2020. Shortly after that, Walker re-entered the transfer portal before ultimately ending up at Butler Community College. He started 12 games this past season for Butler CC.

What Should We Expect From Damien Alford This Season? (orangefizz.net; Griffin)

Damien Alford’s journey since he got to Syracuse has been a fascinating one. The Canadian has shown flashes of being a number-1 receiver at the collegiate level with his deep ball prowess, but there have been instances where he just disappears or is not noticeable on the field. Earlier this offseason, we thought his time in Central New York was over thanks to the wonder that is the transfer portal, but he changed his mind and now he’s back. You can’t deny the potential is there, but will Alford come close to reaching it?

Entering last year, hope sprung eternal among SU fans for what Alford’s numbers might look like. This was in large part because the wideout made arguably the biggest highlight-reel play of the 2021 season when he caught a 45-yard dart from Garrett Shrader in the waning seconds against Virginia Tech to give the Orange a stunning victory. In 2022 he showed improvement, recording career highs in both receptions and receiving yards while placing third on the team in the latter category. It’s only natural to expect another step forward this year, but the sky-high expectations (albeit unfair expectations) that were placed on Alford were not met last season.

Make no mistake, Alford doesn’t get all of the blame for not meeting those expectations. He can thank Oronde Gadsden for making his life easier. Listed as a tight end, the rising junior shattered Syracuse’s single-season records for receptions and receiving yards at that position. If he’s going to produce like that, you don’t need Alford to be super dominant.

The flip side of that is Gadsden can’t do it all by himself, especially this-coming season. Gadsden was a relatively unknown commodity entering last season, that is not the case this time around. Defenses are going to gameplan for him, that’s the downside of being a First-Team All-ACC nominee. Additionally, Devaughn Cooper, who was right behind Gadsden in both receptions and receiving yards last year, is gone. That’s additional production that needs to be filled, creating a need for Alford to step up. Courtney Jackson, another guy many believed could step up, couldn’t and is gone. As is Sean Tucker.

Syracuse Football: Orange makes top 8 for 4-star Baltimore running back (itlh; Adler)

DeJuan Williams from Baltimore, a four-star running back and a top-300 national prospect in the 2024 class, has narrowed down his list of schools still in the running, and Syracuse football remains a contender for him.

The 5-foot-11, 200-pound Williams, one of the best running backs nationwide in the junior cycle, said on Twitter that his top eight consists of the Orange, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech, Boston College, Maryland, Oregon and Stanford.

— DeJuan Williams (@D1Juan2) May 25, 2023

When I penned this column, his hometown team, Maryland, was in the lead in Williams’ recruitment, according to On3’s recruiting prediction machine.

Per an article from Joe Spears on the On3 Web site, Williams has one official visit set up for this summer, to the Terrapins on June 23.

Syracuse football is in the top eight for 2024 four-star RB DeJuan Williams from Baltimore.

Williams is a rising senior at the Saint Frances Academy in Baltimore, which has one of the top high-school football programs nationwide. In the 2022 season, Saint Frances went 9-1 overall and finished at No. 7 across the country in final top-25 composite rankings on the MaxPreps Web site.

On May 3 of this year, Williams said that he had received a scholarship offer from the Orange. According to , throughout his recruiting process, he has landed close to 40 offers.

Syracuse Football: 4-star TE eyes visit, SU makes list cuts for 2024 targets (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse football coaches have already picked up several verbal commitments in the 2024 recruiting cycle, and the Orange continues to see a lot of positive traction with various targets in this class.

Jay’Quan Bostic, a 2024 three-star athlete/wide receiver, recently disclosed his top 13, according to an article from national analyst Clint Cosgrove. The 6-foot-3, 180-pound Bostic is a rising senior at Taft Information Technology High School in Cincinnati.

He lists a top 13 of Syracuse football, Michigan, Michigan State, Miami, Purdue, Kentucky, West Virginia, Georgia Tech, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Illinois, Duke and Boston College.

Bostic, a top-150 wide receiver in his class per several recruiting services, recently had this to say about the Orange in his chat with . “The wide receivers coach, coach (Michael) Johnson is a real dude. He came in to see me this week. He explained how he will put his resume up on the table against anybody. I believe him, I believe in him and I feel like he could get me to the next level if I chose Syracuse.”

Syracuse football is witnessing encouraging developments lately in the junior cycle.

A piece by The Juice Online recruiting analyst Charles Kang says that 2024 offensive tackle Terez Davis has put the ‘Cuse in his top 5 at this point in his recruiting process. Syracuse football will host the 6-foot-7, 260-pound Davis on an official visit the weekend of June 16, per Kang.

Davis attends DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Md. He has officially visited Georgia Tech and also plans to take an official visit to Virginia Tech next month, according to The Juice Online.

Additionally, 2024 four-star tight end/wide receiver Korey “KJ” Duff Jr., who recently put Syracuse football in his top seven, is eyeing a potential official visit to the Hill at some point.

ACC News

The ACC schedule has make-or-break matchups for the conference’s future (stateoftheu.com; Dottavio)

The Atlantic Coast Conference has its back against the wall, or against the ropes. The ACC’s TV deal is antiquated and their universities are bound to fall tens of millions of dollars behind the SEC and Big Ten in the immediate future.

That said, the conference has two potential College Football Playoff teams and possibly 4-5 other eight or nine win programs in 2023. With the ACC’s games buried on the ACC Network the conference has a few bigger games to showcase what they have, and has to hope cannibalization of their top programs doesn’t kill the season.

I’m going to use the SP+ “overall” metrics from Bill Connelly as a litmus test of how important the games could be throughout the ‘23 season.

The out of conference slate

Sept. 2, South Carolina at North Carolina

SP+: 33 at 28

South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer comes from ACC (and BIG EAST) stock as his father, Frank Beamer, was the architect of the Virginia Tech Hokies run into being a household name. Beamer’s Gamecocks beat the Clemson Tigers in ‘22, and were a bowl team a year ago as well. UNC has struggled early in the year in the past and really needs a win here to start the season off with Heisman Trophy candidate Drake Maye at quarterback.

An anonymous ACC assistant coach shares assessment on Miami in Athlon Sports college football preview (247sports.com; Lake)

What happened to the Miami Hurricanes football program in 2022?

That’s the question an anonymous ACC assistant coach discussed in the Athlon Sports college football preview magazine for the upcoming 2023 season.

Here is what the anonymous coach said about the Hurricanes:

“No one can really explain why they looked so bad last season. Everyone in the league was terrified of them coming out of two-a-days and then we all saw how terrible they were that first month…[Former offensive coordinator Josh] Gattis didn’t work at all. Not sure if that’s on him or Mario [Cristobal] or both. Doesn’t really matter for them. They took a dark horse Heisman quarterback and ruined his game. Before last season that kid had it—decisive, quick throws, poise, then he suddenly couldn’t do anything…The idea is that Mario hired names instead of fits, but that doesn’t make sense for a guy who knew the place he was going back to and who’s already coached at a high level…This is a good roster, a top-half roster in this league for sure. I think it’s really interesting that both new coordinators are known for being aggressive with their calls. The kids could really feed off that if they get it going. They need better play on both sides for that to happen.”

Mike Farrell's Top 5 ACC Contenders (wenatcheeworld.com; Farrell)

Who's got the best chance to take home the ACC title?

1. Florida State

2. Clemson

3. UNC

4. Pitt

5. Duke

Breakdown:

FSU has to be the odds-on favorite to win the ACC next season with all the talent returning and added portal talent, with Clemson right up there as the most consistent power in the conference. After that? Who knows? Drake Maye, the Pitt defense, and a surprising Duke round out my list, but it’s a two-team race overall.

— 247Sports (@247Sports) May 29, 2023
From 247Sports' article "Predicting college football's ESPN College GameDay destinations for the 2023 season", here are their primary picks (with ACC-related comments):

WEEK 1: LSU VS. FLORIDA STATE (ORLANDO)

It makes sense for ESPN to be stationed around its Disney World home in Orlando for LSU-Florida State to open the 2023 season, but we could see the Herbstreit and the gang heading to Fort Worth, Texas as well for Colorado-TCU... could be the only opportunity the Buffs get in 2023 if things go sour in Year 1 for Coach Prime.

WEEK 2: TEXAS AT ALABAMA

WEEK 3: TENNESSEE AT FLORIDA

(South Carolina at Georgia is another possibility)

WEEK 4: FLORIDA STATE AT CLEMSON

A potential first round preview of what we'll see later in the season to mark the ACC Championship Game, these two preseason College Football Playoff contenders play early this fall in Death Valley. The Tigers' last big home game was a loss to South Carolina, so coach Dabo Swinney's group hopes to start another lengthy winning streak at Memorial Stadium with the Seminoles being one of the first victims. Meanwhile, Florida State is coming off a 10-win campaign under coach Mike Norvell and has one of its most talented rosters in several years. This one gets even more eyes if the Seminoles beat LSU in the season opener.

2023 Athletic Debt (RX; HM)

2023 Athletic Debt

Which athletic programs are in the most debt? the least? Here you go...

TOO MUCH ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT DEBT?

The wise @KnightAthletics folks have been warning us for years about the crippling rise in debt held by major athletic depts, fueled by a wild arms race in facilities.

There are often… pic.twitter.com/KLQySQ0Y6o
— Tony Altimore (@TJAltimore) May 29, 2023
Here's my quick & dirty breakdown:

Too much debt:

  • Cal, $440M
Cal just rebuilt their football stadium, which if of course located in Northern California, where everything related to real estate is HIGH! Good thing UCLA is guaranteeing to share some of their new Big Ten money, because if the Pac-12 falls apart, Cal will need it!

High risk debt:

  • San Diego St, $322M
  • Arizona State, $319M
SDSU is everyone's G5 expansion candidate du jour, but man, that's a lot of debt-to-income ratio!

Uncomfortable debt:

  • Georgia Tech, $278M
  • Washington, $244M
  • Colorado St, $225M
GT is limited in what they can do with their stadium for the forseeable future because of debt. Washington may be a great sports program in a big TV market, but that debt though...

High, but workable debt:

  • Clemson, $191M
  • Colorado, $189M
  • Cincinnati, $185M
  • Oregon, $181M
  • Washington St, $152M

17 teams the 12-team playoff would have saved: College Football Survivor Show (PS; podcast; Lesmerises)

What teams from the nine years of the four-team College Football Playoff era would have been most helped -- or potentially drastically changed -- by a 12-team playoff?

Could a conference have been saved? Realignment prevented? A coaching career altered? New champions crowned? Other program peaks achieved?

On this edition of The College Football Survivor Show, Doug Lesmerises came up with a 1-10 ranking of the teams that would have been affected the most by a chance in a 12-team world in the last nine years. And then he assigned 17 different teams to those 10 spots. Shehan Jeyarajah had his own list of 15 teams and supplemented Doug’s where needed.

The land on North Central Avenue in Minoa targeted for possible apartments. (Elizabeth Doran|edoran@syracuse.com)

Five-building apartment complex proposed in eastern Onondaga County village (PS; $; Doran)

A Manlius developer is proposing a 48-unit apartment complex in the village of Minoa.

The complex would consist of five buildings located at 7235 N. Central Ave. in the village. The apartments would be built on a nearly five-acre lot between the East Syracuse Minoa school bus garage and a day care center.

The land is across from the railroad tracks.

“We have a definite need in the village for apartments,” said Minoa Village Mayor William Brazill.

The apartments would be similar to another complex built by Robert and Sharon Caron about 20 years just a quarter-mile away, the mayor said. There is a waiting list for people wanting to move into the existing complex, the mayor said.

Brazill said rents would range from about $800 to $1,200 monthly.

The town of Manlius annexed the parcel to the village of Minoa so the project can connect to the village’s sewers, Brazill said.

The proposal is still in the preliminary stages.

Developer Sharon Caron said the project has been planned for some time, but the demand for housing and Micron’s announcement spurred them to submit plans to the village.

The next step is for the village to undertake site plan review, Brazill said.

Mark Rogers calls himself "the voice of college football", but I'm beginning to question if he knows what he's talking about. For instance, in the linked video, he presents the potential increases in bowl payouts for Clemson and FSU as if they wouldn't get ANY of the general shared revenue to go along with their bowl cut.

Agree. In this podcast, at one point, his expert guest says he thought the ACC TV contract runs out in 2028, so that is when he thinks Miami and others will leave.

But he wasn't sure of the date and asked Rogers.

Rogers agreed with him.

Embarrassing.
