Welcome to Heimlich Maneuver Day!

Dr. Henry Heimlich came up with the Heimlich Maneuver in 1974. Also known as abdominal thrusts, this procedure is used to dislodge food and objects from the throat of a choking person. As the American Red Cross claims over 3,000 deaths are caused by choking each year, celebrating Heimlich Maneuver Day is an important way to raise awareness and help save lives. The origin of the day is unknown.

Syracuse football: Orange get early season primetime showcase (TNIAAM; Wall)

The Syracuse Orange will get an early season opportunity to impress a national television audience.

The Action Network is reporting that the Orange’s game at the Purdue Boilermakers will be featured as NBC’s Big Ten Saturday Night primetime game.

Big Ten’s NBC September schedule, sources told @ActionNetworkHQ, includes:

West Virginia at Penn State, Sept. 2, 7:30 p.m. ET
Charlotte at Maryland, Sept. 9, 7:30 p.m. ET
Syracuse at Purdue, Sept. 16, 7:30 p.m. ET
— Brett McMurphy (@Brett_McMurphy) May 30, 2023

Syracuse will open with home games against Colgate and Western Michigan, then Purdue will be their first road game of 2023. It’s a rematch of that wild game from 2022 where Garrett Shrader hit Oronde Gadsden in the final 10 seconds to pull off the improbable win.

SU football kick times, TV info released for 3 more games (PS; Leiker)

Syracuse football fans can put kick times for three more games on their calendars with fewer than 100 days until the beginning of the season.

Kickoff times for the season opener and two other games were released Wednesday by the ACC.

The Orange will kick off the season against Colgate at 4 p.m. on Sept. 2 on ACC Network Extra.

The two programs last met in 2016, when Syracuse won its 16th straight game to even the all-time series at 31-31. SU has played host to all but four of the matchups.

Syracuse’s two non-Saturday games this fall occur back-to-back: Week 9 against Virginia Tech is a Thursday night game, and Week 10 against Boston College is a Friday night game.

The Orange will play the Hokies in Blacksburg, Virginia, at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26 on ESPN.

SU and VT have met twice since the former joined the ACC, in 2016 and 2021, and 17 times before that. The series is split 11-8 in Syracuse’s favor with the Orange winning each of the past two matchups.

Syracuse Football: Orange gets prime-time NBC game at Big Ten’s Purdue (itlh; Fiello)

Last season, Syracuse football played Purdue in the JMA Wireless Dome and won 32-29 with seven seconds left in what might have been arguably one of the craziest 4th quarters of football in Orange program history.

This upcoming season, Syracuse football will head to Ross-Ade Stadium in West Lafayette, Ind., to face the Boilermakers on their field and it looks like it’ll get a prime-time spot on network TV.

National college football insider Brett McMurphy of Action Network has reported via Twitter on several Big Ten Conference games scheduled for Saturday nights in September on NBC. And as it turns out, the Orange at Purdue is one of those contests, to air at 7:30 pm on Saturday, September 16.

Big Ten’s NBC September schedule, sources told @ActionNetworkHQ, includes:
West Virginia at Penn State, Sept. 2, 7:30 p.m. ET
Charlotte at Maryland, Sept. 9, 7:30 p.m. ET
Syracuse at Purdue, Sept. 16, 7:30 p.m. ET
— Brett McMurphy (@Brett_McMurphy) May 30, 2023

This will be the third game of the Syracuse football 2023 season, following home games against Colgate and Western Michigan, with Army and Clemson left in September as well (Purdue is the only road game in September this year).

The Exposition Center at the New York State Fairgrounds. Dennis Nett | dnett@syracuse.com

The NYS Fair Expo Center was supposed to transform Central New York events. Mostly, it hasn’t (PS; $; Struck)

When construction of the NYS Fairgrounds’ vaunted Expo Center was completed in 2018, it promised two things.

First, it would keep the Fairgrounds humming with events year-round, not just during the summer fair. Second, it would draw in mega-sized shows that would have otherwise passed Syracuse by.

The new facility would be a “year-round economic engine,” said former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, at the unveiling of the facility’s blueprints in 2017. The Expo Center would “take this whole region to a new level,” he said a year later on opening day.

The price tag on that dream was $63 million. Now, five years after it opened, has the building lived up to expectations?

The majority of the events held there are shows that had been coming to the fairgrounds even before the Expo Center was built. Three big events — the Winter Fair, volleyball tournaments and a Motocross event —came to the fairgrounds expressly for the Expo Center. But one of those can’t use the massive new building because of a water damage issue.

The facility hosted events on 77 days last year (including the 12-day run of the NYS Fair). That’s down slightly from 2019. It has generated around $2.5 million in rental income for the fair since 2018.

Measuring the impact of the building is a murky process. Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard obtained rental invoice records through a Freedom of Information Act request. The initial records included clerical errors that estimated the total rental income as almost double the true value, and recorded shows that did not happen as having taken place. Syracuse.com checked the records with renters and the Fairgrounds to determine the final figures.

How often is the Expo Center used?

In 2018, the facility housed events a total of 26 days during the 131 days left after it opened in August, according to records.

The next year, that number increased to 85 days booked of 365. (Those tallies include NY State Fair days. They do not include the extra days organizers often need to move in or out of the space.)

Site of proposed apartment complex off Route 31 in Clay. (Rick Moriarty | rmoriarty@syracuse.com)

220 apartments proposed for busy Clay road, just a few miles from future Micron site (PS; $; Doran)

A developer is proposing to build a large apartment complex off Route 31 in Clay, with a portion of the property devoted to commercial/retail use.

That’s a change from what was first proposed by the developer for the 45 acres back in 2018. At that time, the Widewaters Group wanted to build a 100,000-square-foot-plus retail complex with restaurants and stores on the north side of Route 31 in Clay. There was no residential component at the time.

Now, Route 31 Widewaters/Whitestone Development Partners is proposing a commercial/retail section in the front part of the project, at 3715 Route 31, with apartments in the back. About one-third or a bit more would be devoted to retail, according to town officials.

The proposal calls for five four-story buildings with 220 units total, according to the proposal presented to the town of Clay planning board. The units would be one and two-bedroom units, although that could change as the proposal moves through the approval process, said Mark Territo, town of Clay planning commissioner.

Plans for the full retail complex never progressed, and then Covid delayed the project, Clay officials said.

The project is west of the existing Kohl’s plaza, and is located on land between Kohl’s plaza and Sharon Chevrolet. It’s about five miles from Micron’s future site.

The developer needs a zone change from the town to move forward with the apartments. The planning board has recommended the change, and now it’s up to the town to decide. If that goes through, site plan review would begin.

The developer could not be reached for comment. James Trasher of Clough Harbor Associates, representing the developer, told the board recently that sewers have been extended for the project. Trasher did not return calls from Syracuse.com.

I think this guy got the top 10 players' list spot on. I really appreciate him including Anwar in his top 10, that kid is a freaking freight train in the middle of the field. Unbelievable run-stuff ability at the backer spot.

Stephon Thomas would've been a Top 10 candidate for me.
It is a good question.
