Welcome to International Left-Handers Day!

International Left-Handers Day celebrates the uniqueness of being left-handed and raises awareness about the inconveniences that those who are left-handed deal with, in a world where ninety percent of people are right-handed. Many tools and objects are designed for right-handed people, and hundreds of millions of left-handers must adapt. Not only are the disadvantages that left-handers face highlighted on the day, but any advantages that they have are also celebrated.

Of the ten percent of people who are left-handed, more are men than women. Many recent presidents have also been left-handed, including Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama. Those who are left-handed haven't always risen to such heights of power. Throughout history, left-handed people were considered inferior and were often associated with witchcraft. In Christianity, left is associated with evil, and at the last Judgement, those who are sent to the left are damned. Even a left-handed compliment has a negative connotation, as it is an unflattering compliment.

Nonetheless, today is a positive day for those who are left-handed. The day is celebrated worldwide, with events such as left-handed versus right-handed sporting matches, and gatherings at which right-handed people are encouraged to use left-handed implements to see how hard they are to operate. The day was first celebrated in 1976 and was created by a man named Dean R. Campbell, through an organization he founded, Left-handers International. It was then re-declared in 1992 by the Left-Handers Day Club in an attempt to make it more official.

Syracuse shows improvement, but work remains after first scrimmage (spectrumlocalnews.com; MacWilliam)

It was an eventful weekend for the Syracuse football team with the Orange holding their first scrimmage ahead of the fall. Head coach Fran Brown was really pleased with the way the offensive side came out and took command.

Guys like Kyle McCord and Oronde Gadsden led the charge and it seemed like from what Brown said on Monday, that the offense may have gotten the best of the defense a little bit, but things are always improving.

What You Need To Know

  • Practice continues for the Syracuse football team
  • SU is fresh off its first scrimmage ahead of the fall
  • Work remains, but things are moving in a positive direction

The team is a work in progress but overall, things are continuing to point in the right direction as the Orange get closer and closer to game shape.
"I thought the defense as a whole played solid," co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Robert Wright said. "It was a good start, but definitely not a finished product. A lot of things to build off of."
"We're getting there," Brown added. "We've got a long way to go. We get now. We got a lot to take care of and a lot of things to do. We just became a team, so, you know, it just takes us a while."
Practice continues as we are now less than three weeks from the first game of the season.

Tight end poised to be Syracuse football's deepest position group in 2024 (247sports.com; Wainscott)

This season, the tight ends are shaping up to be the deepest and most versatile position group on the Syracuse Orange roster. Anchored by a returning star and supported by a blend of seasoned veterans and promising newcomers, this unit is poised to be a major force on offense.

At the forefront of this group is Oronde Gadsden II, who missed most of last season due to a Lisfranc injury sustained in Week 2 against Western Michigan. Gadsden underwent surgery in mid-September, beginning a 10- to 12-month recovery. After a second procedure in May to remove screws from his right foot, he made an impressive return to practice. Before his injury, Gadsden was an All-ACC first-team performer and an All-American candidate. Although listed as a tight end, Gadsden is a dynamic offensive weapon. His resilience and leadership have been on full display throughout his recovery process.

Gadsden's chemistry with quarterback Kyle McCord has been evident in practice, as the two have quickly made an on-field rapport. His return to full strength has been a highly anticipated development for the Orange offense, with coaches and teammates alike excited about the impact he'll make this season.

Backing up Gadsden is Dan Villari, a fan favorite known for his grit and utility. Villari made his mark last season, particularly in the game against Pittsburgh, where he racked up 154 yards and a touchdown, adding another 12 yards passing from the Wildcat formation. A true dual-threat tight end, Villari excels as both a receiver and a blocker. He's seen consistent reps in practice, further solidifying his role within the unit.

Coach Johnson has been vocal about the strengths of the tight end group, especially praising the impact of his top two players, Gadsden and Villari. However, Johnson is pushing the unit to refine their skills even further, particularly in the blocking arena.

"We're really focusing on the run game aspect. I know they can catch balls, but we've been focusing on the run a lot and getting them to become better blockers," said Johnson.

Also contributing to the depth of this group is 6-foot-7, 253-pound Maximilian Mang known for his pass protection prowess. His size and ball skills make him a valuable specialist on the team. Although Mang has been a dependable backup in past seasons, Gadsden's return might mean fewer chances for him on the field this year. But that hasn't affected his enthusiasm. Mang's commitment to the team is clear, and he's proud of the unit strength that the group has shown in the preseason.

Mang is embracing his role and is excited about the group's chemistry. "It doesn't matter who's in the game, if it's me, Jamie, OG—whichever combination—we all work to the point where we can do whatever we need to do to get a successful offensive play. I think just with that versatility —everybody can do everything—that's what brings us forward," said Mang.

AP Poll Announced, Good News For Syracuse Football (orangefizz.net; Aitken)

Syracuse football has an easy schedule in 2024. It’s been said over and over and over again (guilty as charged). The release of the first AP Top 25 College Football Poll is another good reminder of that fact.

In the Orange’s 12-game slate, there are only two ranked opponents: #19 Miami and #24 NC State. That’s not too shocking. Only four ACC teams made the list, including #10 Florida State, #14 Clemson, and the two aforementioned foes. So it’s not just that SU only has to take on two ranked teams. It’s the fact that out of the top four teams in the conference, Syracuse football gets to play the lower-ranked pair of teams.

Another takeaway comes from looking at the “others receiving votes” section. In here, you’ll find just one more Orange opponent: Virginia Tech. Now, the Hokies did get 77 votes, the second most of any team outside the top 25. That should slot VT in as the 27th team as the country. However, there’s no sight of other teams that Syracuse plays. Georgia Tech and Cal are both supposed to be solid opponents, but this poll shows that they’re not in the same caliber as Miami, NC State, and Virginia Tech.

There’s something obvious that hasn’t been addressed yet: Syracuse football didn’t get a vote. If that shocks you, then maybe you need to temper your expectations a bit. The Orange finished 6-7 last year and had arguably more changes, both in roster and coaching staff, than any other program in the nation. While that could be good, there’s a lot of questions that need to be answered. Those questions can’t be answered with transfer portal or recruiting rankings, training camp highlights, or press conference quotes. They’ll be answered on the field… starting in just under three weeks.

Syracuse football: what are the five biggest ‘x-factor games’ for the Orange in 2024? (TNIAAM; Chiappone)
The Syracuse Orange football team returns to action three weekends from now as the start of the 2024 season gets ever-so closer.

With the Orange soon set to begin their 2024 campaign, we’re taking a look at the schedule to figure out what are the five most significant “x-factor games” of the year.

The games selected appear to have the most at stake for Syracuse. These are the type of games that will likely define just how good the Orange will be this year. Think of it like this: based on the current schedule and what we know now, which games possess the ability to change Syracuse’s fortunes over the course of the 2024 season?

Here are the five games that matter the most for the Orange in 2024:

(Writer’s note: games listed are in the order in which they appear on the schedule)

September 7 versus Georgia Tech

‘Cuse and GT match up fairly well on paper offensively — each returns over 80% of their offensive production from 2023, both top-10 marks according to ESPN. Kyle McCord and Haynes King headline a sneaky fun early-season QB matchup. There’s major playmakers on both sides here.

Defensively, the Yellow Jackets were arguably the worst defense in the ACC. That plus home-field advantage should give Syracuse at least a 60% shot to win at a minimum.

From a narrative standpoint, there’s three reasons to mark this game down on the calendar. First, playing an ACC opponent this early will always bring an element of uncertainty to the table, no matter who that team ends up being. GT will also have an extra week of reps in its belt playing FSU in Week 0.

This also just feels like a game that can go both ways. A win is a very early confidence booster for coach Fran Brown and company. A loss will lead to many sounding the alarm before the schedule really gets going.

The Juice Online - Opponent Analysis: Stanford Cardinal — 2024 Syracuse Football preview (r1vals.com; Parker)
As we countdown to kickoff in September, we’re doing a team-by-team opponent preview. Today, we're previewing Syracuse's matchup with Stanford on Nov. 3 with our friend Ben Parker over at the Cardinal Sports Report.

Most important offensive player, defensive player

On offense, I’m gonna go with fifth year center Levi Rogers. The offensive line needs to take things to the next level and have an improved season. That’s gonna have to start with Rogers being the anchor of the unit. If he has a strong season and lifts those around him, the Cardinal offense should be much improved.
On defense, I would say junior outside linebacker David Bailey. A former 4-star recruit who committed to Stanford with tons of hype. He’s shown flashes of what he can be, but hasn’t yet put it all together. If he can figure out how to take his game to the next level and play with more consistency, that would be huge.

Rising star on offense, defense

Redshirt sophomore wide receiver Elic Ayomanor is definitely the rising star offensive player among the skill positions. He’s coming off a 1,000+ yard season and looking to take his game to the next level after having a bit of a breakout season last year.
For the defense, junior cornerback Collin Wright checks off the rising star box. He is eying an NFL career and would love to boost his stock this season. He’s got great physical tools and seems poised to become the best corner Stanford has had since Kyu Blu Kelly.

Team outlook: Best-case scenario

Absolutely best case scenario is the team goes 6-6 and makes a bowl game. I think that’s unlikely, but that’s the best I could see them doing. I’m forecasting a 5-7 season. I think they improve from last year, but don’t make a bowl.

Team outlook: Worst-case scenario

They don’t improve at all from last year and go 3-7 once again. I don’t see that happening either. As I said above, I think they fall within that 4-5 win range.

Head coach / program is on the rise, stagnant, decline because ...

Program definitely has the vibe of being on the rise. Head coach Troy Taylor and his staff have brought a lot of energy and passion to the program. They are eager to turn this around and have landed some notable talent like 4-star quarterback Elijah Brown.
It’s going to take some time to get this program back to where it needs to be, but it does feel like they’re getting there.

Tommy Devito- New York Giants

Completed 8/15 for 92 yards and carried the ball 4 times for 2 yards in a 14-3 win over the Lions.

Nolan Cooney to sign NFL contract, join another former Syracuse football star in Tampa (report) (PS; $; Carlson)

Former Syracuse punter Nolan Cooley will sign an NFL contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to Rick Stroud, a reporter with the St. Petersburg Times.

Cooney won a training camp battle last season to make the Arizona Cardinals’ roster but was cut after four games.

Tampa Bay currently has just one punter on its 90-man roster, Jake Camarda, who was selected in the fourth round of the NFL Draft in 2022. Cooney was unselected in 2021.

Camarda ranked 18th in the NFL last year in net punting average (41.8) and sixth in total distance covered per punt (50.1). Camarda punted four times during Arizona’s first preseason game for a net of just 37.8 yards. He did not land any inside the 20-yard-line.

Cooney is the second player with Syracuse ties to join Tampa Bay’s 90-man preseason roster. Former Syracuse running back Sean Tucker played well in Tampa Bay’s first preseason game over the weekend, carrying 10 times for 68 yards.

ACC Preview: No. 10 Florida St looking to back up last year's breakthrough league title with CFP bid yahoo.com; Iacobeli; AP)
Mike Norvell and Florida State got a taste of the big time last season. The Seminoles are not about to let that slip away this fall.

“It sets the stage and opportunity for us to continue to push and continue to elevate this program to ultimately where it deserves to be,” Norvell said after leading Florida State to its first Atlantic Coast Conference title in nine years last season. “That's among the nation's elite, when you look across the course of college football."

That wasn't everyone's opinion with the undefeated ACC champions getting snubbed by the College Football Playoff due in large part to an injury to starting quarterback Jordan Travis. The season ended with a a 63-3 bashing by equally passed over Georgia in the Orange Bowl with the Seminoles hurting from injuries and opt-outs.

No matter, Norvell said. His 10th-ranked team, picked to defend its ACC title this season, wants to leave no doubt they belong with the game's very best.

“At the end of the day, a lot of people from the outside might have a perspective of who is great, who is the greatest,” said the fifth-year coach. “For us, let's control the things that we can control. Let's go out there and be the best that we can be.”

It won't be easy with the talent Florida State lost on offense, including Travis, receivers Keon Coleman and Johnny Davis, tight end Jaheim Bell and tailback Trey Benson.

But Norvell believes he's got plenty of skilled players, led by former Clemson quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei, who had plenty of big moments in three seasons with the Tigers and spent last year leading Oregon State. Offensive lineman Darius Washington has seen a humble, friendly Uiagalelei bond with teammates since arriving.

“He can still make an impact to everybody on the team just by the way he is,” Washington said, “how he comes in every day and works with us.”

If not Florida State, then ...

No. 14 Clemson, which won seven ACC titles in eight seasons between 2015-2022, was picked second behind the Seminoles. The Tigers, the favorites a year ago entering the season, were out of contention before November with a 4-4 record. Five straight wins to close the season has Clemson thinking it can go after fresh championship goals.

Best 2024 FB Games? (RX; HM)

Best 2024 FB Games?
Today we are in search of the best 2024 ACC football games...

Best Non-Conference Games

From Yahoo! Sports "10 top non-conference games of the 2024 college football season" by Ian Casselberry, here are those involving an ACC team:

NC State vs. Tennessee, Sept. 7

Both the Wolfpack and Volunteers are looking to build on promising 2023 seasons with an eye on contending for their respective conference championships..
Quarterback Nico Iamaleava begins his eagerly anticipated first full season and Vols fans are hoping he'll operate Josh Heupel's offense even faster than Hendon Hooker did two years ago. The expectation in Knoxville is to power through a favorable schedule to a College Football Playoff bid and SEC title.
NC State added transfer Grayson McCall, who will be stepping up to power conference competition after throwing for more than 10,000 yards and 88 touchdowns in five seasons at Coastal Carolina. A CFP bid may be within reach for the Wolfpack in the ACC and a win over an SEC opponent in primetime would provide a big boost to those aspirations.

Miami at Florida, Aug. 31

College football feels more alive with this intrastate rivalry being meaningful. Miami and Florida haven't played each other since 2019, when the Gators won, 24–20. This is the first of a home-and-home between the two programs, but they'll hopefully continue beyond that.
Following a disappointing 7–6 run in 2023, Miami has eyes on rebounding and contending in the ACC after adding transfer QB Cam Ward and tailback Damien Martinez. If the Hurricanes beat Florida, their schedule could be smooth until Oct. 26's matchup with Florida State.
Gators coach Billy Napier is under pressure to improve on a 5–7 campaign and two consecutive losing seasons. If Florida loses this season opener — in Gainesville — it's difficult to see much success ahead with a tough SEC schedule. And if that happens, Napier might not be around for the rematch in 2025.

Developer proposes restaurant with pickleball near major Onondaga County shopping center (PS; $; Doran)

A local developer is proposing to build a restaurant and bar with six indoor pickleball courts in the town of Camillus.

The Pickled Kitchen would be located at 532-536 Hinsdale Road, across from Township 5 shopping center in Camillus. The 20,000-square-foot building would be built directly across from the entrance road to the Costco gas station.

There are three homes on site, but the land has already been rezoned to commercial. They would be torn down to make way for the Pickled Kitchen, said Joe Goethe, a partner in Cameron Group LLC.

East Syracuse-based Cameron Group also is the developer behind Township 5, a mixed-use development with shopping, medical offices and apartments.

The site plan is under review now by the town of Camillus planning board.

Goethe said he got the idea last Christmas after his wife convinced him to try playing pickleball. After playing, they started talking around the kitchen counter, and the idea came up.

Goethe said he was looking for another venture after selling his hotels. He and a partner run the Lakehouse Pub in Skaneateles, so he said thought he’d put his hospitality experience to work with this venture.

The restaurant will feature shareable foods, along with flatbreads, sliders and salads, Goethe said. Along with six indoor pickleball courts, there will be an area for playing darts, shuffleboard and other games. That area will have lounge seating, he said.

People dining at the restaurant can look out over the courts or watch the large televisions which will be set up in the restaurant and bar.

Pickleball courts will be available all day, and people will have to pay to play and make reservations.

Goethe said if all goes as he hopes, the Pickled Kitchen would open next summer.

“We hope to be the neighborhood place for gatherings,” he said.
