Welcome to National Soft Ice Cream Day!
Mister Softee, Dairy Queen, and Carvel may all come to mind when you think of soft ice cream, also known as soft serve, the most popular ice cream in the United States. Lucky for us, it's National Soft Ice Cream Day, so it's perfectly acceptable to indulge in a little or a lot of it today!
The first references to soft ice cream appear in the first half of the twentieth century. Stories conflict to its origin, with both Carvel and Dairy Queen laying claim to inventing it. The Carvel story says that on Memorial Day in 1934, the truck that Tom Carvel had been selling ice cream out of got a flat tire. Instead of trying to find a way home, he pulled his trailer into a nearby pottery store parking lot and continued to sell his ice cream. After being out so long, his ice cream started to melt, and he began telling customers that the partially-melted ice cream was a new type of dessert. His ice cream became a hit and he continued to sell it. He opened the first Carvel store that year. Carvel ice cream contains egg yolks, so technically it's custard.
Dairy Queen claims that founder J.F. McCullough and his son, Alex, invented soft ice cream in the mid-1930s. The pair had been making hard ice cream, but made some new ice cream where they changed its temperature from -5°F to 23°F, which McCullough thought brought out its flavor. They continued to experiment, and used 5% or 6% butterfat instead of 10%, and settled on 18°F for the temperature. In 1939, they purchased a machine from someone selling frozen custard, reconfigured it, and opened Dairy Queen in 1940, where they sold their soft ice cream.

Syracuse football may have its next Duce Chestnut: ‘He is about his business’ (PS; $; Leiker)
Duce Chestnut’s advice to Syracuse football’s rising star at his former position is simple.
Three years ago, Chestnut was the Orange’s hyped true freshman cornerback who ended up being a Freshman All-American and the runner-up for ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year.
This year, Marcellus Barnes Jr. could enjoy similar success.
“You’re a great football player,” Chestnut said he tells Barnes. “Everybody gonna have something to say or try and push you or stuff, just be yourself. It’s gonna come to you easy.”
Barnes is the youngest of four cornerbacks who are near locks for the Orange’s depth chart. Alongside him are returner Jayden Bellamy, Buffalo transfer Devin Grant and Notre Dame transfer Clarence Lewis.
Chestnut was moved to safety upon his return from LSU, where he’s a projected starter alongside Justin Barron and Alijah Clark.
Barnes is one of the most mentioned young players by coaches and his veteran peers alike not just on defense but on both sides of the ball.
He is likely the true freshman who will leave 2024 with the most game reps under his belt.
At the most recent practice with a media viewing period Thursday, Barnes and Bellamy were the first to run with the defense. Earlier in the week, it was Barnes and Lewis.
“He’s probably the youngest guy in the room, but he’s extremely mature,” defensive backs coach Joe Schaefer said Thursday. “He is about his business. He shows up every day like an upperclassman.”
A four-star per the 247Sports Composite, Barnes was first recruited by SU head coach Fran Brown while he was coaching at Georgia.

Syracuse football: Comparing ticket prices to other ACC teams (TNIAAM; Ostrowski)
The Syracuse Orange football season opener is just two short weeks away - the first of four home games in five weeks. With seating capacity in the JMA Wireless Dome cut down to around 42,000, and the excitement surrounding Fran Brown taking control of the program, you’d figure there aren’t many tickets left.
That’s not the case:
It’s not that different than last year, when SU didn’t come close to selling out a game. Previously, I argued that it was partially due to rising ticket costs - which seem to have continued this fall with the new chairback seats. But how much of a deterrent is the price to get in?
To find out, I decided to look at the overall value of a Syracuse ticket compared to the rest of ACC football. I examined every game for sale and noted the highest and lowest ticket prices being offered, using both a “floor” (typically an FCS game) and a “ceiling” (the highest price bracket). The highest are your 50-yard seats, while the lowest are as far away from the action as each venue allows.
There are three conditions for this comparison: I did NOT include “premium” seats (club or anything that has food/beverages included in the ticket cost), games at neutral sites are not considered, and all prices are retail, meaning no resale seats that may be listed higher or lower than the cost listed by the team.
ACC Football Ticket Prices
Syracuse | $28.80 | $77.95 | $62.65 | $166.95 | Ticketmaster |

Syracuse football: Predicting the Orange two-deep depth chart (TNIAAM; De Guzman)
No Sparrow or Bellamy on defense? Not good.
The Syracuse Orange are about to finish their second full week of training camp. That means there’s only two weeks before the opening game of the season against Ohio. As we get closer and closer to the 2024 college football season, we’re starting to see how Fran Brown’s team is shaping up in terms of starters and backups.
With a multitude of talented freshmen and transfers joining the Orange program, there is no shortage of options for Fran Brown. Syracuse, for the first time in quite some time, has some pretty interesting decisions to make for the offensive and defensive starters that will take the JMA Wireless Dome. With that in mind, let’s try to guess how the two-deep will shake out.
Offense
- Quarterback: Kyle McCord / Michael Johnson Jr. OR Carlos Del Rio-Wilson
- Running Back: LeQuint Allen / Will Nixon
- Wide Receiver: Zeed Haynes / Darrell Gill Jr.
- Wide Receiver: Jackson Meeks OR Umari Hatcher / Emanuel Ross
- Wide Receiver: Trebor Pena / Ja’Meer Thomas
- Tight End: Oronde Gadsden II / Dan Villari
- Left Tackle: Da’Metrius Weatherspoon / Joshua Miller
- Left Guard: Jakob Bradford / Joe Cruz
- Center: J’Onre Reed / Josh Ilaoa OR Codie Hornsby
- Right Guard: Mark Petry / Enrique Cruz Jr.
- Right Tackle: Savion Washington / Trevion Mack
Among the twos, the backup quarterback battle still rages on. There are even rumblings that freshman Jakhari Williams has entered the conversation to be the primary backup to Kyle McCord. I think it’ll eventually be Michael Johnson Jr., but we’ll see when the first depth chart comes out. On the offensive line, fans probably expected Enrique Cruz to be a starting tackle for Syracuse. With Weatherspoon and Washington filling those spots, Cruz has recently been seen working inside at guard.
Defense
- Defensive End: Fadil Diggs / Chase Simmons
- Defensive Tackle: Dion Wilson Jr. / Elijah Fuentes-Cundiff
- Defensive Tackle: Kevin Jobity Jr. / Maraad Watson OR Rashard Perry
- Defensive End: Denis Jaquez Jr. / David Omopariola
- Linebacker: Marlowe Wax / Zyian Moultrie-Goddard
- Linebacker: Derek McDonald / James Heard
- Cornerback: Devin Grant OR Marcellus Barnes / Greg Delaine
- Safety: Alijah Clark / Braheem Long Jr.
- Safety: Justin Barron / Jaeden Gould
- Safety: Duce Chestnut / Berry Buxton III
- Cornerback: Clarence Lewis / Ibn McDaniels

Fran Brown's arrival lifts expectations in Syracuse for a brighter Orange future (apnews.com; Frank)
Expectations are growing in Syracuse, where Orange football is undergoing a fresh start under Fran Brown, who is already cashing in on his reputation as one of the nation’s top recruiters.
Hired in December to replace Dino Babers, the former Georgia defensive backs coach has persuaded key players to stay put and assembled the program’s highest-rated recruiting class since rankings have been compiled. He also lured a group of high-profile transfers, including former Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord and ex-Texas A&M defensive lineman Fadil Diggs.
“I want to make sure that Syracuse gets back to where they belong, where it was,” Brown said. “You’re going back to Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, Floyd Little, Larry Csonka, all those guys that played. I want to get back to those same eras. You had (quarterback) Donavan McNabb, (receiver) Marvin Harrison, (defensive end) Dwight Freeney, (safety) Donovin Darius. All those guys are important to me.”
The Orange faltered under Babers, who was never able to recreate the success he enjoyed during a 10-3 finish in 2018. He was fired one game short of completing his eighth season, and finished with a 41-55 record, and 20-45 in conference play.
A first-time head coach, Brown has several important, high-impact players who can help the Orange surpass the modest expectations of ACC media members who picked them to finish 12th in the 17-team conference.
The offense has a chance to be dynamic under McCord, a former five-star recruit who threw for 3,170 yards, 24 touchdowns and just six interceptions for the Buckeyes in 2023. His surprising choice of Syracuse gave Brown and the program an immediate shot of adrenaline.
Key returnees include running back LeQuint Allen (1,064 rushing yards and nine touchdowns), a second-team All-ACC pick last season. Another is All-ACC preseason tight end Oronde Gadsden II who returns after a season-ending Lisfranc injury and is expected to be one of McCord’s top receiving targets. And then there’s slot receiver/returner Trebor Pena, who was limited to one game last year due to injury.
They’re joined by highly touted freshman running back Yasin Willis, and transfer wide receivers Jackson Meeks and Zeed Haynes (both from Georgia) and Justus Ross-Simmons (Colorado State).
If the offensive line, bolstered by 6-foot-8, 340-pound transfer Savion Washington (Colorado) does its job, this could be a fun offense to watch.
“Yeah, I think we’ll be dynamic I think at every single position, offensive line, tight end, receiver,” McCord said. “We have a lot of great weapons. I’m excited to get going.”

Syracuse freshman Malachi James runs faster than Tyreek Hill (247sports.com,; McAllister)
Syracuse freshman running back Malachi James was clocked at 23.6 miles per hour during a recent practice, the official Syracuse football account posted on X (formerly known as Twitter). If that seems fast to you, it is. Blazing fast. Perhaps some context will show just how fast it is.
The fastest time in the NFL last season was DK Metcalf at 22.23 miles per hour. Tyreek Hill, considered by most the fastest player in the NFL, reached 23.24 miles per hour (the fastest of his career) in 2016 on a kickoff return. James was more than a full mile per hour faster than Metcalf and 0.36 miles per hour faster than Hill's fastest. Hill's top speed last season was 22.01 miles per hour.
This is not the first time Malachi James has put up numbers that showcase just how special his speed actually is. He ran a 10.18 in the 100m earlier this year to qualify for the New Jersey state championship which he would later win. That 10.18 would have placed eighth at the US Olympic Trials in June. It would have won the ACC Championship this year. Carl Lewis, considered one of the fastest sprinters in Olympic history, ran a 10.21 as a 21 year old. Just two years before he would earn gold at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. That's right, James is already faster at 18 years old than Lewis was at 21.

The Juice Online - Quarterbacks — 2024 Syracuse Football preview (r1vals.com; Stechchulte)
With Garrett Shrader’s career at Syracuse ending after last season, a new starter was needed. The transfer portal produced one quickly, as Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord leaned on his long-time relationship with Fran Brown and joined the Orange.
McCord started all 12 regular season games last year for the Buckeyes, and earned Third Team All-Big Ten honors after throwing for 3,170 yards and 24 touchdowns against a mere six interceptions.
Named to the preseason watch lists for the Maxwell Award and the Walter Camp Award, which are both given to the national player of the year award, as well as the Davey O’Brien Award for the best collegiate quarterback, McCord has already been a strong presence both on and off the field for SU.
An accurate passer, McCord is more likely to stay in the pocket than race around the field, but the skill position talent around him on the field should create opportunities downfield for him similar to those he tried to exploit in the spring game.
Last season’s second-stringer, Carlos Del Rio-Wilson, has appeared in 14 games over the last two seasons at Syracuse, including a pair of starts. Del Rio-Wilson is an excellent athlete with a powerful arm, but has shown inconsistency with his accuracy.
Del Rio-Wilson has ripped off six double-digit yardage gains with his legs in his limited playing time, but completed just over 47 percent of his 102 pass attempts for the Orange with eight interceptions and four scores. Four of those picks came in his lone start against Boston College last year, but Del Rio-Wilson did pick up 67 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
That second-string spot is not locked down this year, however, as Michael Johnson Jr., the son of SU’s tight ends coach Mike Johnson and a transfer from Florida Atlantic, has made some waves in fall camp. A redshirt senior, Johnson came out of high school as a dual-threat quarterback, but never found his footing at either Penn State or Florida Atlantic until last season when he played as a rushing quarterback, picking up 140 yards and seven scores on the ground while attempting just one pass.

The transition from Dino Babers to Fran Brown as head coach for Syracuse football was one that many across the 315 are particularly fond of. The change in the driver’s seat saw a new culture brought into the program, one of detail, accountability, relentlessness, and toughness. This new mentality brought in a strong amount of additions (such as quarterback Kyle McCord,) but also saw its share of subtractions from SU football. One of the players to hit the road: running back Muwaffaq Parkman.
x.com
twitter.com
Parkman decided to hit the transfer portal following the 2023 season and announced his new destination this past Thursday. The former Orange recruit will be taking his talents to Robert Morris University, an FCS-level program located in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania. The interesting part about this commitment though is that Parkman is joining a program coached by Jerome Smith, a former star who ranks thirteenth all-time in rushing yards at SU. Alongside Smith on the coaching staff is Bart Tanski, who worked on the sidelines at Syracuse from 2015 to 2017 as a defensive quality control coach.
Muwaffaq Parkman measures in at 5-foot-11, 180 pounds, and was a three-star commit in the Class of 2023. Parkman ranked as the 1,431st best player coming out of Hillside, New Jersey. During his time with the Orange, Parkman was redshirted and did not see a snap.
Is Fran Brown responsible for Parkman’s departure? Well, yes and no. Last season, junior LeQuint Allen Jr. solidified himself as the top back for the SU offense with an All-ACC season. Behind him though, Brown landed a top recruit in Yasin Willis, who many are expecting to have a strong breakout as a true freshman. After that is Will Nixon, who transferred into the program to follow in the footsteps of his father, leaving Parkman in a logjam in the running back room.

The Mustangs have a high-powered offensive attack that notched 38.7 points per game and chewed up 454.9 yards per contest. Their defense also came to the table surrendering only 17.8 points per game and allowing 304.1 yards per game. The most intriguing matchup on the schedule pits two conference champions together as SMU won the aforementioned AAC title last year, and current ACC Champion Florida State on September 28th in Dallas. Wake Forest stumbled in '23. Dave Clawson hopes changes get the Demon Deacons back on course (lancasteronline.com; AP; Beard)
Wake Forest's formula had worked perfectly in turning a small, private university into an Atlantic Coast Conference contender that even earned top-10 national rankings.
Last year was different.
The Demon Deacons stumbled to four wins, a last-place finish in the ACC and the end of a seven-year run of bowl games. Wake Forest returns six starters on both offense and defense as they try to return to the steady approach that has worked throughout Dave Clawson's tenure.
Clawson, entering his 11th season, said the staff tweaked offseason and spring preparation for a team picked to finish 15th in the expanded 17-team ACC.
“When things are going well, you don’t want to mess with it,” Clawson said. "And then you have a thump and you go 4-8, and it makes you examine everything. And maybe it isn’t what you did, but sometimes I think just to (say), ‘This is not acceptable.’ As the head coach, you’ve got change things up. For me to not change anything would say everything we did was correct.”
Clawson’s teams have frequently outperformed preseason projections, including a trip to the league title game in 2021 after being picked to finish fifth in the Atlantic Division. But last year was the biggest stumble in what has been a steady building job..
“When we all came in, this was a program that was going to bowl game after bowl game, winning season after wining season,” receiver Taylor Morin said. “Last year was an anomaly. It was definitely a little weird and we were humbled by that.”
QB stability?
The Demon Deacons struggled to find stability after star passer Sam Hartman left for Notre Dame. They started three quarterbacks and after the season Santino Marucci opted to transfer and Mitch Griffis did too, though he later decided to end his football career entirely.
Michael Kern played in four games last season and he entered preseason camp battling for the starting job with transfer Hank Bachmeier, who spent four seasons at Boise State and last year at Louisiana Tech.
Problem areas
Part of Wake Forest's formula for success has been avoiding mistakes.
Yet the Demon Deacons tied for 105th nationally with 22 turnovers and tied for 111th with a minus-6 margin last season. They struggled on third downs, both in staying on the field (108th nationally behind a woeful 34.2% conversion rate) and getting off the field (81st at 40.2%).
They also ranked as the third-worst team in the Bowl Subdivision by allowing 4.08 sacks per game and second-worst in sack rate at 13.2% of pass plays, with only Old Dominion ranking worst.
“Before you can go forward, you've got to stop moving backwards,” Clawson said.
Key returnees
The Demon Deacons could get a boost with promising receiver Donavon Greene set to return from a knee injury that sidelined him all last year. He also missed the 2021 season with a knee injury.
Defensive lineman Jasheen Davis returns after racking up 7 1/2 sacks last year, while he's joined up front by linemate Kevin Pointer and linebacker Dylan Hazen — who had a team-best 86 tackles last year.
There's also experience with the return of kicker Matthew Dennis (26 field goals) and punter Ivan Mora (186 career attempts).
He said it
“Last year wasn’t a representation of us. We trust each other to right what went wrong last year. We trust our coaches will lead us in the right way to bring Wake Forest where Wake Forest wants to be.” — offensive lineman DeVonte Gordon.
The schedule
The Demon Deacons open at home against nearby North Carolina A&T on Aug. 29, followed by their ACC opener against Virginia (Sept. 7). Then comes a marquee game: a visit from Lane Kiffin and sixth-ranked Mississippi (Sept. 14).

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5705431/2024/08/16/florida-state-clemson-acc-withdrawal-deadline/ (the athjletic.com; $; Vannini)
The ACC constitution contains an Aug. 15 deadline for members to inform the league of their departure for the following year. That deadline has now come and gone for Clemson and Florida State, which are suing the league to get out of its grant of rights, a move that would allow them to more actively pursue membership in another conference.
FSU and the ACC are also in the middle of a court-ordered mediation that will last into next week. No resolution is expected to come out of that mediation, and sources on all sides did not expect Clemson and FSU to make any announcements on their future before Aug. 15, leaving all parties to continue their courtroom battles as the 2024 football season approaches.
So what does it all mean and where do things stand?
The ACC withdrawal deadline
The ACC requires a notice of withdrawal by Aug. 15 in order for a member to leave on June 30 of the following year. When Florida State sued the ACC in December 2023, it asked a Florida court to deem that FSU issued its notice of withdrawal to the league effective Aug. 14, 2023, if the court ruled that the grant of rights was illegal or unenforceable. The legal fight has dragged on, but FSU has technically not put in its withdrawal yet.Clemson’s legal challenge, filed in March, argues the slightly different stance that the grant of rights should not apply once a school leaves the conference. Clemson said in March that it had not given an official notice of withdrawal.
“We will fight to protect the ACC and our members for as long as it takes,” ACC commissioner Jim Phillips said at ACC media days in July. “We are confident in this league and that it will remain a premier conference in college athletics for the long-term future. These disputes continue to be extremely damaging, disruptive and incredibly harmful to the league, as well as overshadowing our student-athletes and the incredible successes taking place on the field and within the conference.”
Why Florida State and Clemson want to leave
Money. The ACC’s television deal pays its member schools around $30 million per year, the third-highest payout among Power 4 leagues, but the SEC and Big Ten are both closer to $60 million annually. The new College Football Playoff contract, beginning in 2026, includes a new revenue distribution model that will pay SEC and Big Ten schools around $21 million annually, while ACC schools will earn around $13 million.Between those two revenue streams, ACC schools are looking at being as much as $40 million behind Big Ten and SEC schools annually, though the ACC’s new “success incentive” bonus pool could close that gap a little bit. FSU and Clemson have national championship expectations in football and find the situation untenable, so they’ve filed legal challenges to the ACC grant of rights, an agreement both schools signed that gives the ACC all its schools’ TV rights through 2036.
The state of the court battles
There are four ongoing lawsuits: the ACC against each school in North Carolina, and each school against the ACC in Florida and South Carolina, respectively. But the lawsuits have moved slowly and are still in the early stage of determining where the disputes should take place.A North Carolina court ruled separately that the ACC’s cases against FSU and Clemson could move forward in North Carolina, denying each school’s motion to dismiss. FSU has appealed to the North Carolina Supreme Court, and Clemson will do the same.
A Florida court ruled that FSU’s case against the ACC could move forward in Florida. The ACC has appealed that, with a hearing set for Sept. 11.
A South Carolina court earlier this month ruled that Clemson’s case could move forward in South Carolina. The ACC is expected to appeal.
What happens if the cases continue in each state? It’s complicated, and the answer will only drag things out even longer. Whichever court rules first could have the advantage, but not necessarily.
The ACC, for its part, has pushed back hard and held firm to its simple stance that FSU and Clemson knew what they had signed up for and gladly took part in the league’s television deal for many years.

ACC Quarterbacks Lead the Way on Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Preseason Watch List (clemsonsportstalk.com; theACC)
How can players like Klubnick and Uiagalelei make these lists? What do they need to do to prove they are not good? And how is Nate Yarnell on this list?
The Atlantic Coast Conference led the way with 13 quarterbacks named to the 2024 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award preseason watch list, the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation, Inc., along with presenting sponsor A. O. Smith Corporation announced. This season’s list acknowledges 63 of the nation’s leading quarterbacks, representing all 10 FBS conferences, as well as football independent.
The award annually recognizes the top senior or upperclassman quarterback set to graduate with their class.
The ACC, which had the most quarterbacks on the list among all conferences, was represented by Thomas Castellanos of Boston College, Ashton Daniels of Stanford, Kyron Drones of Virginia Tech, Haynes King of Georgia Tech, Cade Klubnik of Clemson, Grayson McCall of NC State, Kyle McCord of Syracuse, Fernando Mendoza of California, Tyler Shough of Louisville, Preston Stone of SMU, DJ Uiagalelei of Florida State, Cam Ward of Miami and Nate Yarnell of Pitt.
The preseason watch list, semifinalists, finalists, and award recipient are selected by the distinguished Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Selection Committee, a group of prominent college football journalists, commentators, announcers, and former players.

ACC Football Predictions for 2024 - Final Standings & Championship Game (youtubr; podcast; SG1 Sports)
ACC football predictions for the 2024 college football season, including the final standings and championship game prediction.
Every ACC football teams biggest trap game in 2024 (fightinggobbler.com; Roche)
The 2024 college football season is just about here with Week 0 beginning in nine days with four games. Three ACC teams, Florida State, Georgia Tech, and SMU will all be in action on Aug. 24 with the Seminoles and Yellow Jackets playing in Ireland, while the Mustangs will get a tough non-conference matchup at Nevada.
This season will n interesting one in terms of the ACC schedule with Stanford, California, and SMU all joining the conference this season expanding it to 17 teams. With that said, each team is going to face its fair share of obstacles in 2024 with trap games, and here is one big trap game on each team's schedule.
Each ACC team's trap game for 2024
1. Boston College
The schedule makers didn't do the Eagles any favors by opening the season at Florida State Labor Day night, but there is one game where they need to be careful and avoid a letdown. After back-to-back games against Missouri and Michigan State, BC faces an under-the-radar Western Kentucky team at home before traveling to play at Virginia a week later. Last season they went 8-5 with a bowl win over Old Dominion.2. California
This is the first year of Cal in the ACC and they have a tough early-season schedule with two trips to the Southeast area in the first month. They travel to Auburn (Sept. 7) and Florida State (Sept. 21), but a game in-between at home against San Diego State is a huge trap game for the Bears. A win there would go a long way into helping them become bowl-eligible at the end of the season....
...
14. Syracuse
The Orange get their first four games at home which is a nice way to start the season, but their first road game at UNLV is going to be a big test for Ohio State transfer quarterback Kyle McCord and first-year head coach Fran Brown in what is a Friday night game....
https://athlonsports.com/college/pi...es-bold-best-conference-claim-on-acc-football (athlonsports.com; Meyer)
The Atlantic Coast Conference has not had a national championship winning football team since Trevor Lawrence, Travis Etienne and the Clemson Tigers in 2018, but that that doesn't preclude them from making a 'Best Conference in America' claim according to Pitt Panthers Coach Pat Narduzzi.
Narduzzi shared his thoughts on The Jim Rome Show Saturday, including the ACC's academic achievements in his message to fans.
"The ACC is an incredible conference," Narduzzi said. "I think it's the best conference in America as far as academics go, and football at the same time."
Narduzzi added that he spent eight years in the Big Ten Conference, giving him added perspective on the situation.
"I believe the ACC athletically is an incredible conference, I think the quarterbacks we see in this conference, and it all starts with the guy pulling the trigger...I think we've defended as a defense here some of the greatest quarterbacks in the game.
"And I don't think that happens in every conference," Narduzzi added, saying that he believes the conference is disrespected at times.
The Panthers open the 2024 college football season at home against the Kent State Golden Flashes on August 31 at 12 p.m. ET.

Deadline Passed, Florida State & Clemson DID NOT Withdraw From ACC | New CFP Tiebreaker Criteria (youtube; 3+podcast; Locked on ACC)
The deadline to withdraw from the ACC in time to play the 2025 football season for another conference came and went on Thursday, August 15th. Despite persistent rumors throughout the summer, Florida State and Clemson did not make any official declaration by the deadline. This means the earliest either school could play for another conference would be for the 2026 football season. The legal process will continue to play out and perhaps they will have their ducks in a row for a formal declaration by next year. The Seminoles and Tigers are both involved in lawsuits against the ACC in an effort to break the Grant of Rights agreement.
Hosts Alex Donno and Kenton Gibbs discuss the deadline passing and explain why they aren’t surprised. A report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel last week predicted that neither school would make a move before the deadline. The guys look at an ACC prediction from Stewart Mandel of The Athletic. He has the Virginia Tech Hokies finishing third behind Florida State and Miami. Could they really finish higher than Clemson and NC State? The guys ponder a new report that the College Football Playoff committee is removing conference championships as one of their tiebreakers for selection.

ACC, post August 15th, 2024 (RX; HM)
ACC, post August 15th, 2024
August 15th came and went without incident. What does that really mean for the ACC? A few things...
1. No school announced it was leaving for the 2025-26 season. That means the ACC will be at full strength, not just for this year, but next year as well. The earliest any team can leave now is July 1st, 2026. The next big date now is February, 2025, when ESPN must declare if they will extend the current ACC contract or let it expire and try to sign a new one (at the risk of losing the ACC Network).
2. We can also turn our attention to the "look-in" negotiations. These are not automatic pay raises, but more like opportunities to add on to the existing contracts. The ACC definitely has some new things to sell, too, like in-start ACCN subscriptions in California and Texas, late night games, and possibly more Thursday and Friday games now that the league is bigger. It's probably not too early to discuss what happens to the Raycom sublicensed games which are currently on The CW (personally, I'd like to see that part continue and may even expand).
3. We still don't have the full picture on just how much money Clemson and FSU can get from the ACC this season, but estimates are that's it's a lot more than last year. We'll know a lot more by this time next year. Sixty million dollars may be very realistic for those two schools, assuming nobody else steps up to take their football crowns away!

Reports of ACC death greatly exaggerated! (RX; HM)
Reports of ACC death greatly exaggerated!
Well, it's after midnight, and the ACC has survived another existential threat. Clemson and Florida State did NOT announce that they are leaving the conference next season, which means they'll remain until 2026 at least...
A lot of people have gotten all worked up this Summer because Clemson and Florida State have made it clear they want to move to either the SEC or Big Ten, and schools like UNC and Virginia seem to have open invitations to do so... but there's a difference between wanting to go a party, being invited to go, and actually going! So far, nothing has actually happened...
Even if the ACC loses some teams - let's say they lose all four of those, plus maybe GT and Miami in the absolute worst-case scenario - it can still rebuild well enough to command a TV contract every bit as valuable as the Big XII's.
For example, the ACC could remain with P5 pedigree and add Oregon State and Washington State. If it thinks it can pry them away from the Big XII, it might go after the "Four Corners" schools. It could try to poach the Big XII's Eastern flank by inviting West Virginia, UCF, and/or Cincinnati. It could stab right at the heart of the Big XII by going after TCU and Kansas (assuming the Jayhawks aren't in the SEC or Big Ten by that time).

From 247Sports: College Football Playoff bubble teams entering 2024 season
(tl;dnr version: if your mascot is "Tigers", you're on the list!)
Memphis, Missouri, Clemson, and LSU Tigers are all "on the bubble" - at least according to 247Sports.Memphis Tigers
Missouri Tigers
Kansas St Wildcats
Clemson Tigers
The ACC placing two teams in the playoff this season is a stretch, but believe it's going to happen with the projected champion and perhaps the league's runner-up getting a nod depending on final records. That leaves Clemson, which plays three top-25 teams during the first six weeks of the season — including top-ranked Georgia — with a say in the conversation. What could get really interesting for the Tigers is if they're able to upset Kirby Smart's Bulldogs in the opener, but miss out on reaching the ACC title game at 10-2 overall. If that happens and Georgia takes first or second in the SEC, the selection committee would be hard-pressed to leave Clemson out of the top 12.

LSU Tigers
Michigan Wolverines

How to get 2024 NYS Fair tickets, parking passes, ride wristbands (Pro tip: don’t bring cash) (PS; Tulloch)
Parking lots and gates at the 2024 New York State Fair will be cashless again this year (card payment only). So how do you get tickets? It’s best to do it in advance and avoid lines, bad cell service or other issues.
General adult tickets to the fair cost $8 (up from $6 in 2023) and are available online at etix.com. A parking pass costs $12.
The fair is also offering a “frequent fairgoer” ticket for $25 that grants admission all 13 days of the fair.
Parking passes and general admission tickets are available online or by calling 1-800-514-3849 between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday.
You can buy admission tickets by card at the gate, but you’ll have to use one of the electronic kiosks or a QR code on your phone.
As for parking, it’s best to buy a pass ahead of time, then show the lot attendant the pass on your phone or print a copy to show. (EZPass Plus is no longer an option for parking.)
Apple Pay and Google Pay are not accepted for admission or parking.
However, many of the Fair vendors and food stands accept cash, so it can’t hurt to bring a few bucks for food and drinks.
Passes are also on sale online for the midway rides.
A “mega pass” wristband gives the user unlimited rides every day of the fair. It’s $95 and is available until noon on Wednesday, Aug. 21 (opening day).
A “ride all day” wristband is $29.95 in advance and is good for unlimited rides for a single day. Those are available at that price until noon on Aug. 21. After that, the price jumps to $37 on weekdays and $47 on weekends.
The midway is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day of the fair except Monday, Sept. 2, when it closes at 9 p.m.
The fair runs from Aug. 21 to Sept. 2.
Unused 2023 admission tickets will not be accepted at the 2024 State Fair.

Preparations for the 2024 New York State Fair include setting up the new merch booth next to the Pizze Fritte stand. (Charlie Miller | cmiller@syracuse.com)(Charlie Miller | cmiller@syracuse.com)
Eating, drinking, shopping and more at the 2024 NYS Fair: See full list of vendors (PS; $; Cazentre)
Footsie Wootsie foot massage. Pizze Fritte fried dough. A place to buy your EZ Pass.
Sausage sandwiches, wine slushies, tie-dyed T-shirts and the ultimate in cleaning products.
All these vendors and goods, plus many more old favorites and some newcomers, are signed on for the 2024 New York State Fair. The fair starts Wednesday, Aug. 21 and ends on Labor Day, Sept. 2.
The vendors include food stands, nonprofit agencies and commercial retailers and suppliers. You can find everything from government offices offering information and services to outlets selling products ranging from T-shirts, artwork and jewelry to leather goods, cosmetics and even flashlights. (See full list below)
As always, there are some vendors who chose not to renew their contracts, such as the Coyote Moon Winery and Carr’s Cove, a food vendor in the Horticulture Building. But there are also new stands taking their place.
In all, there are 282 total vendors at this year’s fair, roughly the same number as last year. Of those, 112 are food vendors, also similar to last year.
But that’s well below the years before the pandemic, when the fair typically had just under 400 total vendors, of which about 200 were food and drink stands, according to syracuse.com archives.
The actual number of stands is higher than the number of vendors, because many have multiple locations. The vendor called Tadros Pastries, for example, has nine stands, including Shake It Up and Maurice’s Belgian Waffles in the Dairy Products Building and several Roasted Corn outlets across the fairgrounds.
“We’re back and busy as usual,” said Wahid Akl, who runs those stands with his brothers-in-law David and Michael Tadros. “If we’re here, that means another year has passed and its fair time.”

Destiny USA facing foreclosure after missing loan deadline, rating agency reports (PS; $; Moriarty)
Destiny USA could face foreclosure after the giant Syracuse shopping mall failed to obtain a one-year extension on more than $430 million in overdue mortgage loans.
Kroll Bond Rating Agency reported Tuesday that Destiny could not make a required $38.9 million payment this summer to lower the balance of the loans to qualify for another one-year extension.
As a result, a special servicer overseeing the loans has terminated a forbearance agreement and is “planning enforcement action,” Kroll said.
Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard has found no evidence yet that the lender has initiated a foreclosure proceeding on the mall, the largest shopping center in New York and one of the largest in the nation.
In response to a request for comment on Friday, Stephen Congel, CEO of Destiny USA owner Pyramid Management Group, issued the following statement:
“Destiny USA has been a landmark in our community for more than 30 years. We are currently engaged with the special servicer regarding modification of the loan and will continue to provide an exceptional experience for our 17 million annual guests and employees.”
It is unclear what benefit a foreclosure would have for the holders of the commercial mortgage-backed securities that the loans are part of. It’s also unclear what impact, if any, a foreclosure would have on the mall’s operation.

Syracuse’s highest-volume ER looks to grow even more with new $1 million entry area (PS; $; Dowty)
Crouse Hospital unveiled a new walk-in entrance Friday that it hopes will improve safety and efficiency at the city’s highest-volume emergency room.
The improvements will allow Crouse to see roughly 6,000 more patients a year, a 10% increase, without sacrificing quality, estimated CEO Dr. Seth Kronenberg.
It’s a small, but significant, number in a city that struggles with extremely long wait times at its other two hospital systems.
Crouse has heavily advertised its ER wait times, which are the fastest in the city. Crouse’s wait times are around the national average, while visitors to ERs at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center and Upstate wait much longer.
Crouse saw more than 58,000 people in 2023, compared to roughly 55,500 at St. Joe’s and 46,500 at Upstate’s downtown adult ER.
The average time to complete a visit to Crouse’s ER is 1.7 hours faster than St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center and nearly 4.5 hours faster than Upstate’s downtown hospital next door, according to 2023 data.
The $1 million renovation to Crouse ER’s walk-in entrance includes a permanent metal detector, new waiting room and more triage space, among other improvements.
Those who don’t need an extended ER stay can now be called into triage, get treated and then sent home without entering the more intensive areas of the emergency department, Kronenberg said.
By streamlining care for less acute cases, Crouse can reduce overcrowding and speed up care for everyone, said Dr. David Mason, director of Crouse’s emergency services.
The renovation also focused on making the ER waiting room more inviting. After all, the ER is the “front door” of the hospital for many, and about 25% of the hospital’s admitted patients start in the ER, Kronenberg said.
“We want you to walk in and feel like you’re not walking into an ER,” the CEO said of the renovated space.
The new design has separate doors for patients entering and exiting the ER, designed to speed up check-in and check-out wait times.

Proposal for a Chick-fil-A at a busy Onondaga County intersection is dead (PS; $; Doran)
Chick-fil-A has withdrawn its proposal to build a restaurant with a drive-thru at the iconic Sweetheart Corners intersection in North Syracuse and Clay.
The Atlanta-based chain wanted to build a 2,800-square-foot restaurant with drive-thru on four parcels at the busy Sweetheart Corners.
It’s been more than two years since Chick-fil-A submitted its proposal, and the town of Clay still had not approved the request for a special permit.
Traffic issues held up the project, said Mark Territo, Clay’s planning commissioner. The restaurant wanted entrances at Taft and South Bay roads, and there was just too much congestion, he said.
Chick-fil-A had been asked to go back and come up with alternate plans for traffic. Instead, the company withdrew the proposal, Territo said.
The intersection, once home to Sweetheart Markets, attracts about 34,000 vehicles on average each day, according to New York State Department of Transportation data.
Chick-fil-A has restaurants in Cicero and Clay, and at a NYS Thruway rest stop in Madison County.
Construction has started on another restaurant in DeWitt, at the corner of Erie Boulevard East and Bridge Street.
Sponge plows on with a little help from a Syracuse musician (review, photos) (PS; $; Axe)
1994 gifted the world a delicious cocktail of grunge, post-grunge, punk, modern rock and alternative sounds.
Detroit rockers Sponge tossed a gas can on the roaring music inferno that year with the release of its platinum-selling debut album Rotting Piñata.
Lead singer Vinnie Dombroski demonstrated the band’s staying power 30 years later with current members Andy Patalan (guitar, vocals), Tim Patalan (bass), Kyle Neely (guitar) and drummer Dave Coughlin at “Party in the Square” in downtown Syracuse on Friday night.
“Molly (16 Candles)” from Rotting Piñata is the song that will give you the “oh yeah” moment if you haven’t heard Sponge in a minute with its ear-wormed plea of “don’t ask whyyyyy, don’t ask whyyyyyy.”
Sponge threw the small-but-engaged crowd a welcome curveball by calling local musician Joe Altier of “Just Joe” and “Brand New Sin” fame on stage to sit in front of his piano and perform a vibey, slowed-down version of “Molly” inspired by a recent cover of the song posted by Altier on social media.
Sponge then went into the full-throttled version of “Molly” with Altier playing along. If only someone could hop into Doc Brown’s time machine and travel back to tell a young Altier in his college dorm room back in 1994 that would happen someday.
