National Dog Day was founded in 2004 by Colleen Paige. She is a pet and family lifestyle expert and animal advocate, who has also founded days such as National Mutt Day, National Puppy Day, and National Cat Day. The day happens to take place on the anniversary of the day when her family adopted their first dog when she was ten. National Dog Day is for all dogs, both purebred and mixed, and the mission of the day is to raise awareness about the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year, as well as to acknowledge the role dogs have played to keep us safe and bring us comfort. Dogs work with law enforcement, are eyes for the blind, and help the disabled, and they enrich our lives in a myriad of ways.

At 6-foot-5 and 296 pounds, Dion "Tank" Wilson exemplifies the overhaul Syracuse has undergone along the defensive line, where increasing the size of the unit was a major emphasis this offseason for new coach Fran Brown.dennis nett | dnett@syracuse.com
Syracuse’s defensive line used to rely on twists and speed. Fran Brown went out and got a ‘Tank’ (PS; $; Carlson)
Dion Wilson became “Tank” in high school.
Wilson was playing tight end for his 7-on-7 football team in California when he gave the opposing linebacker an elbow, tossed him to the ground and secured a touchdown pass.
“My coach was like, ‘You a tank,’ ” Wilson remembered. “I just stuck with that.”
It was less than a month, Wilson said, until he was moved from tight end to defensive tackle.
Now listed at 6-foot-5 and 296 pounds, Wilson exemplifies the overhaul Syracuse has undergone along the defensive line, where increasing the size of the unit was a major emphasis this offseason for new coach Fran Brown.
Heading into the season, Wilson is projected as one of three new starters along the defensive line — all of them imported via the transfer portal, most of them unproven at the Power-Four level.
When practices have been open to reporters, Wilson has played with the first-string defense alongside transfers Fadil Diggs (Texas A&M), Isaiah Hastings (Alabama) and returning defensive end Denis Jaquez Jr.
“Just like his nickname, he’s a tank,” returning defensive tackle Elijah Fuentes-Cundiff said of Wilson. “He’s going to be a big factor on defense. He lives up to that for sure.”
While Syracuse’s entire roster has been overhauled from last season, the defensive line has undergone one of the more dramatic and interesting makeovers.
Syracuse is moving on from a 3-3-5 defense that was viewed as the strength of the team in recent years under a pair of respected defensive coaches, Tony White and Rocky Long. The defensive line has lost the team’s two leaders in sacks from last season, one to transfer (Kevon Darton) and another to graduation (Caleb Okechukwu), as well as a third contributor and sometimes-starter (Terry Lockett).
The Orange is hoping that getting bigger across the unit equates to getting better.
Wilson is more than 15 pounds heavier than any of the departing players and has more playing experience than anyone other than Diggs. Hastings is 10 pounds heavier than any of the losses.

Who are the best returners for Syracuse in 2024? (orangefizz.net; Burstein)
With less than a week until the start of the 2024 season for Syracuse football, much of the focus has been on the new for the Orange. A new coaching staff, a new quarterback and lots of other new players are leading high expectations for Syracuse this year.
The obvious
Four of Syracuse’s top players regardless of year are all returners who made the decision to try things out with Fran Brown. Oronde Gadsden leads the group. The redshirt junior is back after missing much of the 2023 season with injury. But if the tight end is anything like he was two years ago (969 receiving yards), he will make a huge impact.
Also on offense is LeQuint Allen. While younger than the other players on this list (a true junior), Allen showed last year that he can compete with the top running backs in the ACC. The running back was second-team All-ACC in 2023 and will once again lead the rushing attack. With a quarterback in Kyle McCord who has seen problems on the ground in the past, Allen’s role is even more important.
The other two top returners are on the defensive side of the ball. Senior Marlowe Wax has been the definition of consistency for the Orange. The linebacker has played in all 49 games during his time with Syracuse and has consistently been a tackle leader.

Georgia Tech upsets No. 10 Florida State. Will Yellow Jackets be ranked when they visit Syracuse? (PS; AP)
Aidan Birr made a 44-yard field goal as time expired and Georgia Tech upset No. 10 Florida State 24-21 on Saturday in the first major college football game of the season.
Coming off an undefeated regular season, but with a remade roster, the Seminoles tied the game at 21 with 6:33 left in the fourth quarter on a 15-play touchdown drive that included two fourth-down conversions by DJ Uiagalelei.
Florida State (0-1, 0-1 ACC) never touched the ball again, and Birr came on with five seconds left on the clock to drill the winner.
Jamal Haynes ran for 75 yards and two touchdowns for Georgia Tech, and Haynes King threw for 146 yards and ran for 54 as the Yellow Jackets (1-0, 1-0) were able to control the line of scrimmage and accumulate 190 rushing yards and 5.3 yards per carry.
Uiagalelei completed 19 of 27 passes for 193 yards in his Florida State debut.
Ryan Fitzgerald made a 59-yard field goal, a career long and the second longest in school history, just before halftime to tie the game at 14. Fitzgerald had a 52-yarder earlier in the game.
The teams had just seven drives apiece. Georgia Tech’s final two drives were among the best, an 11-play, 89-yard touchdown drive and then the 12-play, 49-yard drive to set up Birr’s kick.
Georgia Tech hosts Georgia State next week in Atlanta before heading on the road to face Syracuse on Sept. 7.
Saturday’s win could leave a big impression on AP voters.
Even if Georgia Tech doesn’t carry a top-25 ranking into the JMA Wireless Dome, it plans to have one of the school’s best traditions with it.
Georgia Tech didn’t send its iconic Ramblin’ Wreck overseas to Ireland, but the school plans to take it to Syracuse in a couple weeks.
The Syracuse trip would become the Ramblin’ Wreck’s most northerly destination. (The farthest north it has been is Ann Arbor, Michigan.)

The Juice Online - Defensive Backs — 2024 Syracuse Football preview (r1vals.com; Stechschulte)
Similar to the offensive line, the defensive backfield features some returning starters to go with some accomplished transfers into the program. In one case, a transfer has already accomplished a lot at Syracuse.
The headlining “new” face, Duce Chestnut returns to Syracuse after transferring to LSU and redshirting last season. Chestnut was a two-year starter in his first stint with the Orange, earning Third Team All-ACC honors as a freshman and Honorable Mention All-ACC honors as a sophomore. The redshirt junior has been a playmaker throughout his collegiate career, amassing five interceptions, including returning one for a touchdown, nine pass breakups, and four tackles for loss.
Chestnut is reunited with a couple old teammates in Justin Barron and Alijah Clark. Barron has started the last 34 games for the Orange and has played in all 49 contests while he has been on campus. Barron was second on the squad last season with 90 tackles despite playing a portion of the season with a cast on his hand. The senior has proven to be a playmaker on the last line of defense, listing 4.5 sacks, one interception, three forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries on his resume.
A two-year starter at safety, Alijah Clark returns for his final year of eligibility. Clark has played in every game the last two seasons and 32 in his career (seven games as a freshman at Rutgers), including appearing in the starting lineup 23 times with the Orange. While not a giant on the field, Clark has been a solid tackler, rolling up 120 stops in two seasons at SU, including 65 last year, good for fourth on the team.
Jayden Bellamy joined the Orange after redshirting his freshman season at Notre Dame. The redshirt sophomore from New Jersey appeared in a dozen games, included seven starts. Bellamy’s biggest play last season was a pick-six that iced SU’s win over Pittsburgh at Yankee Stadium.
Jaeden Gould played in all 13 games last season, including a start against Boston College, and notched his first collegiate turnover, picking off a pass against Army. Greg Delaine also was a rotational player in his redshirt freshman year last season, playing mostly on special teams, but did start at cornerback against Boston College. Jalil Martin saw some time at cornerback last year after transferring from Nebraska, appearing in nine games.
As with many other positions on the roster, the Orange defensive backfield got an influx of talent through the transfer portal. Two players joined the roster, one a more accomplished player taking a step up and the other a talented young prospect looking for greater opportunity.
Devin Grant was a First Team All-MAC player at Buffalo last season after leading the conference with five interceptions. Grant also filled out his stat line by being second on the Bulls with 79 tackles and added two fumble recoveries, a forced fumble, and two blocked kicks. The playmaker has two years of eligibility left.
Marcus Washington Jr. was a four-star cornerback coming out of high school. He redshirted in his lone season at Georgia, then spent last year with Louisville before transferring to Syracuse. Washington appeared in every game last season, seeing most of his action on special teams. Washington has three years of eligibility remaining coming into this campaign.
The high school recruiting process also produced some talent for Syracuse, as well. The highest-profile name is Marcellus Barnes Jr., a four-star cornerback who committed to the Orange in January. Originally committed to Virginia Tech, the Chattanooga, Tennessee native flipped his decision and inked with Syracuse on January. Ibn McDaniels is a three-star recruit from Elizabeth who was ranked a top-25 player in the state as a senior in high school and Braheem Long Jr. is also a three-star recruit from New Jersey.
Syracuse Football GREATLY BENEFITS After Georgia Tech Upsets Florida State | Syracuse Orange Podcast (youtube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)
Syracuse Football faces Georgia Tech in week two in a game that just got a whole lot more interesting. Fran Brown's squad will now likely face a ranked Yellow Jackets team led by quarterback Haynes King. If the Cuse can start the 2024 college football season 2-0, the Orange could be inside the AP Top-25 this early in the year for the first time since 2019.
Jackson Holzer explains why the Cuse greatly benefited from Georgia Tech's upset on this edition of the Locked On Syracuse Podcast.

Dale Williams elevating Syracuse's offensive line to NFL standards (247sports.com; Racine)
As the Orange wrap up the last week of training camp and prepare to hit the gridiron next Saturday, some players are going into their senior year hoping that they get the chance to play on Sundays after this season is over.
Over the last four weeks of camp, NFL scouts have been in and out, and General Manager Nate McNeal said the numbers will just continue to grow as he hopes to get all 32 teams to come through.
"By the end of the week, we'll probably have 27-28. There are a couple of teams that haven't come by yet, but they'll be here during the season. That just speaks to what we've done with the roster and through this coaching staff," said McNeal.
One of the coaches making sure he is preparing seniors like J'onre Reed, Josh Ilaoa, and Jakob Bradford for the next level is Offensive Line Coach Dale Williams. Coach Williams is new to the coaching staff, but he is no stranger to the way the NFL trains its offensive linemen.
"All the drills that we do are NFL-style drills; the offense is even a predicated NFL-style offense," said Coach Williams.
Coach Williams creating this type of environment for senior linemen is only going to give them the upper hand in their attempts to make it to the next level.
Senior lineman Josh Ilaoa has grown throughout camp and has dreamed of going to the NFL ever since relative Nate llaoa was drafted in 2007. Ilaoa feels that he is perfecting his craft under Coach Williams.
"He's helped us out a lot, especially with his experience coaching and where he comes from. I feel he's continuing to help us add to our bag," said Ilaoa.
Coach Williams' impact on the offensive line is being felt throughout the entire offense. Redshirt junior wide receiver Umari Hatcher has seen a change in the offensive line.
"I feel like the O-line has grown tremendously since the beginning of camp to now. The only thing they have to do is keep working, keep being physical, and keep protecting 6 (Kyle McCord), man, and everything will go well," said Hatcher.
Hatcher knows that the offensive line is going to protect Kyle McCord so he can get the ball in his hands because that is something he wants to continue to work on.
"I just want to be more consistent, catching the ball, doing better in every category a receiver has," said Hatcher.
He knows it makes it easier for him to grow when the linemen do their part, but it also builds a connection between them because he knows they have his back.
"Having them there is nice. They're all funny, so it's like, yeah, we can get through this," said Hatcher.
Coach Williams knows he's giving this offense everything they need to accomplish their goals of playing in the NFL.
"Everything we do daily can help those kids get there," said Coach Williams.
With the leadership of Coach Williams, the proof will be in the progress. So pay attention when the offense takes the field this season. They won't only be playing to protect McCord or for their coaches but to turn their dreams into reality.
Syracuse Football: Florida State loss opens the door for others in ACC title race, CFP (itlh; Adler)
Syracuse football commences its 2024 season this coming Saturday, but the current term did get going this past weekend. And it started off with a bang.
Last Saturday, in Dublin to kick off the 2024 college football season, the Atlantic Coast Conference was front and center as Georgia Tech shocked No. 10 Florida State, 24-21, with a last-second field goal.
That result left the Seminoles, which won the ACC championship a year ago, with a 0-1 record to begin 2024. This outcome also likely means that when the new top-25 polls are released early this week, the Yellow Jackets (1-0) should be ranked.

It's super early in 2024, but FSU's setback could eventually have far-reaching implications as far as the ACC title race, as well as which league school, or schools, could potentially land an invite to the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff.
In the conference's preseason media poll, the Seminoles were projected to finish No. 1 in the ACC, and that could still happen. But FSU's somewhat stunning week-zero defeat also opens the door for others, and hopefully that includes our beloved Orange.
In week two, Syracuse football will now have a huge opportunity coming up.
This Saturday, Aug. 31, the 'Cuse has its 2024 season opener at home versus Ohio in a non-conference affair from the JMA Wireless Dome. First-year head coach Fran Brown and his top-flight staff will look to put forth a dominating performance at the onset, and I'm confident the Dome crowd will prove boisterous.

May as well start this now given it's related to yesterday's game and we play 'Cuse in two weeks.
Mostly compliments and caution, but there are some real gems.
GT is going to be a huge problem
Wow what an OLine they have. Let's schock the world!I think with a better QB and a balanced O, I think we take care of business.
Their defense is not that good. FSU made them look better than they are. Cuse by 7.
I didn't they tackled well. I think we run the ball down their throat
GT won’t be able to stack the box with their safeties, or McCord will tear them apart.
King is a very good QB, but he will have a major struggle trying to hear his helmet audio over the Dome crowd!
I’m fully on the FSU is bad train. My guess? They’re going to be 6-6 this year and this game will be looked at as a fleeting highlight for GT versus a big win, GT is okay and I’m sure they’ll go bowling but I dont expect them to be anything special
GT is legit but this is a home field coming out party game. Nice week to play them honestly wish it was at night.
If we think we’re as good as we think we are, we should beat GT.
We almost beat them without a QB. Unless we lay an egg simple because out pieces are too new I like us.

Just how high can the Franchise go in year one? SU has won 10 regular season games just twice in their history... and both were as an Independent. Here’s how it can happen again:
Ohio Bobcats - Win (1-0, 0-0)
This is no Middle Tennessee trap. Ohio may be well-coached, but with the insane roster turnover from last fall, they won’t be nearly in synch enough to pull off an upset. Kyle McCord and Co. start the year off with a bang and get early exits thanks to an equally impressive defensive showcase.
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets - Win (2-0, 1-0)
Haynes King and McCord start the fireworks show early by matching drive-for-drive in the 1st half, but the Orange defense adapts and contains the GT quarterback down the stretch. As time winds down on the Yellow Jackets, King makes a desperation heave... right into the hands of Justin Barron. The ensuing party on Euclid continues into SU’s first bye week.

The Fran Brown era of Syracuse football begins in one week.
Brown, an ace recruiter who most recently served as the defensive backs coach at Southeastern Conference powerhouse Georgia, is now in his first year as the head coach of the Orange, after officially replacing former head coach Dino Babers in early December of 2023.
There is undeniable excitement brewing on the Hill and among the 'Cuse fan base, given the hiring of Brown and other top-flight assistants, along with a 2024 roster that is filled with talent across all position groups.
In the ACC's preseason media poll released late last month, Syracuse football was forecast to finish at No. 12 in the league's pecking order. The conference, for the 2024 season, has expanded to 17 members in football with the additions of California, SMU and Stanford.
In the Coaches' preseason top-25 poll, the Orange received one vote. Many experts project that the 'Cuse will reach a post-season bowl game for the third straight term, although how high up Syracuse football can place in the ACC race is anybody's guess at this juncture.
On paper, the Orange's 2024 docket looks manageable. The 'Cuse doesn't face the top-two squads in the ACC's preseason media poll, No. 1 Florida State and No. 2 Clemson.
What's more, the Syracuse football four-game non-conference calendar isn't brutal by any means, although the team's trip to UNLV in early October is likely to prove challenging.

The 2024 college football season began with an upset in the land of Guinness as No. 10 Florida State got beat by unranked Georgia Tech 24-21.
It was a beautifully dumb ACC football game, featuring a trick play, an underwhelming performance by DJ Uiagalelei and improbable field goals.
But also, the result really impacts Florida State’s chances of making the expanded College Football Playoff. At the very least, FSU’s road to getting there seems tougher, putting itself in a scenario where it likely needs to run the table and win the ACC title to get in. The playoff aside, the game didn’t forecast a great future for FSU this season.
And college football folks on social media seemed to have a bit of fun at Florida State’s expense on Saturday after its loss. Remember, not long after missing the College Football Playoff last year, FSU sued the ACC – to sum it up in the simplest way – to get out of the league to potentially join one like the SEC or Big Ten, because FSU feels like its falling behind in the so-called college football arms race due to TV revenue. Essentially, FSU blamed the ACC for missing the playoff.
After all that political posturing by FSU that made a lot of people roll their eyes, folks had jokes after Florida State got dusted by Georgia Tech:

Florida State football suffered an improbable loss overseas to start the 2024 college football season.
The Seminoles (0-1, 0-1 ACC) went down 24-21 on a last-second field goal to ACC foe Georgia Tech (1-0, 1-0 ACC) despite being ranked ranked No. 10 in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll and the AP Top 25 Poll. They entered as 10.5-point favorites over ACC for Georgia Tech. Despite jumping out to an 8-0 lead on its first drive of the game, FSU's offense never found its footing in the first game as a Seminole for quarterback DJ Uiagalelei.
How this loss reflects in the Seminoles' national ranking, and more importantly impacts their College Football Playoff resume, remains to be seen. But what is known is the list of top 10 teams that Florida State joined Saturday by being upset by an unranked opponent in Week 1 and the rarity it has occurred in college football.
Here's what you need to know on past upsets by unranked opponents vs. top 10 opponents in Week 1:
When was the last time a top 10 team lost to an unranked team in Week 1 of college football?
Before Florida State was upset by Georgia Tech on Saturday, the last top 10 team to lose to an unranked team in Week 1 of the college football season came last season when Duke beat No. 9 Clemson at home in Durham, North Carolina.
History of top 10 college football teams upset in Week 1 by unranked opponents
Here's a look back at past top 10 college football teams to be upset by an unranked team in Week 1 dating back to 2000:
Note: Some sites considered these games as Week 1 games despite taking place in Week 2 of their respective seasons, taking into account Week 0 designation.
- 2000: UCLA defeated No. 3 Alabama
- 2001: Fresno State defeated No. 10 Oregon State
- 2002: Colorado State defeated No. 7 Colorado
- 2005: TCU defeated No. 7 Oklahoma
- 2016: Wisconsin defeated No. 5 LSU
- 2016: Texas defeated No. 10 Notre Dame
- 2021: Virginia Tech defeated No. 10 North Carolina
- 2022: Florida defeated No. 7 Utah
- 2023: Duke defeated No. 9 Clemson
- 2024: Georgia Tech defeated No. 10 FSU

Syracuse as well Brad...
Saturday, Georgia Tech sent big shock waves not only through college football but also the ACC with their upset of No. 10 Florida State in Dublin, Ireland. Looking to make a statement following a frustrating end to the 2023 campaign, the Seminoles set themselves up for a long 2024 season.
The Yellow Jackets completed the upset with a field goal as time expired and also put the ACC on notice that they're going to be a problem in 2024. However, the FSU loss opens the door wide open for the rest of the ACC to have new hope to win the conference. Are the Seminoles done? No, but they made their path a lot more difficult and gave some teams more hope than they had when they woke up Saturday morning.

Brad Crawford of 247Sports Sunday laid out a path for two teams who could benefit from Florida State's loss and one of those teams just happens to be Virginia Tech.
Brad Crawford says FSU's loss open things up for Virginia Tech and NC State
Crawford painted a scenario where things really opened up for Virginia Tech and North Carolina State Saturday afternoon with the first result of the 2024 college football season. He noted that even if Florida State wins out in the ACC and is 7-1, Virginia Tech and NC State, neither of who play the Seminoles, could each finish 7-1 and if both beat Georgia Tech, then they would have the tiebreaker for Mike Norvell's team. That's an interesting take as the Hokies do face a doable ACC schedule, albeit harder after yesterday's result, but they get Miami on the road and Clemson at home, as well as Georgia Tech. Yes, a trip to Syracuse is not going to be easy in early November, but Crawford's path he painted does paint a good picture for Brent Pry and his team heading into Week 1. Now it's all about taking care of business on the field.

In the first game of the 2024 college football season, the Yellow Jackets took on the 10th-ranked Seminoles in Dublin, Ireland. In the end, Georgia Tech stunned the Seminoles with a 24-21 upset, thanks to a 44-yard field goal by Aidan Birr with no time left on the clock. Georgia Tech quarterback Haynes King completed 11 of 16 passes for 146 yards, and he ran the ball 15 times for 54 yards. Running back Jamal Hayes scored two rushing touchdowns and ran for 75 yards on 11 carries. For Florida State, quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei threw for 193 yards on 18-27 passing in his Seminoles debut.

SMU has spent MASSIVE money to get into the ACC and to prove themselves worthy of playing at the highest level of College Football. They went into Reno, Nevada on Saturday night and made a poor first impression.Even as College Football returns, realignment continues to percolate throughout the sport. Legitimate reports indicate UConn could be in the Big 12 by 2026. 11:05

We learned long ago that it’s silly to draw grand conclusions based on a team’s first game of the season.
However, the two games involving ACC teams on Saturday provoked a lot questions:
---Which result was more surprising – Georgia Tech’s 24-21 upset of No. 10 Florida State in Ireland, or SMU’s 29-24 victory over Nevada in Reno?
Florida State players and fans felt worse than the SMU faithful on Sunday morning, but the truth is, SMU’s close win was more surprising.
Georgia Tech returned most of its offensive talent from last year’s productive attack and figured to improve from its 7-6 record of last year if it could play better on defensive. Meanwhile Florida State has a new quarterback (DJ Uiagalelei) who is still feeling his way but figures to improve as the season goes along. The Seminoles were 11.5-point favorites, but they carried some unknowns – as still so. Don’t forget, FSU scored just 43 points (14.3 points per game) in the final three games last year after quarterback Jordan Travis suffered a season-ending injury.
SMU, on the other hand, returned much of its talent from last year’s , and entered the 2024 season as a darkhorse contender for the ACC title. The Mustangs were 27.5-point favorites over a Nevada team that went 2-10 last season and was picked to finish last in the in the 12-team Mountain West Conference in this year’s preseason poll. SMU should have clobbered the Wolf Pack, even in Reno, but instead had to overcome an 11-point deficit in the final eight minutes to pull out a win. As SMU coach Rhett Lashlee admitted afterward, “They kicked our tail most of the game.” Nevada should not be kicking anyone’s tail, least of all an ACC contender.
---Is Florida State’s season ruined already?
Absolutely not.
When four teams participated in the College Football Playoff, a season-opening upset loss was crippling. But with 12 teams getting to the national-championship tournament this year, Florida State is still very much in the running.

Saturday Night Result: SMU
The Mustangs made their ACC debut in Nevada, but it didn't go as planned...

SMU | 0 | 10 | 3 | 16 | 29 |
Nevada | 7 | 10 | 7 | 0 | 24 |
SMU fell behind early, primarily due to mistakes:
- an interception thrown on their first possession
- a bad snap on the 2nd punt which led to a Nevada touchdown
- coverage problems on some Nevada pass plays
- a missed 51-yard field goal in the 3rd quarter for good measure
Then, something must have clicked...

2024 Tie Breakers, ACC vs SEC (RX; HM)
2024 Tie Breakers, ACC vs SEC
The ACC eliminated divisions last season, and the SEC eliminated them this year... so, what if there's a tie? How will they decide who plays in the Conference Championship Game?
The SEC rule includes this common-sense statement:
Perhaps the ACC felt this goes without saying, but the SEC made it clear: a tie between 1st and 2nd will be broken by the Conference Championship Game; we only need tiebreakers for 2nd and 3rd! With that in mind, here's a side-by-side comparison:If a tiebreaking step produces standings with two teams tied for first place in the conference, both will qualify for the SEC championship game. To decide the seeding, both teams will progress through the two-team tiebreaking procedures until the tie is broken, which will determine home/away designation for the SEC championship.
ACC Tie-Breakers | SEC Tie-Breakers |
If there is a 2-team tie for a spot in the ACC Championship game, there are 6 different tie-breakers available to break the deadlock. | In the event of a tie between teams competing for a spot in the SEC championship game, the following procedures will be used in descending order until the tie is broken: |
1. Head-to-head competition between the two tied teams. | A. Head-to-head competition between the tied teams. |
2. Win-percentage versus all common opponents. | B. Record versus all common conference opponents among the tied teams. |
3. Win-percentage versus common opponents based upon their order of finish (overall conference win-percentage, with ties broken) and proceeding through other common opponents based upon their order of finish. | C. Record against highest (best) placed common opponent in the conference standings and proceeding through the standings among the tied teams. |
4. Combined win-percentage of conference opponents. | D. Cumulative conference winning percentage of all conference opponents among the tied teams. |
5. The tied team with the higher ranking by the Team Rating Score metric provided by SportSource Analytics following the conclusion of regular season games. | E. Capped relative scoring margin versus all conference opponents among the tied teams. Formula will include a cap of 42 points scored on offense and 48 points allowed on defense. |
6. The representative shall be chosen by a draw as administered by the Commissioner of Commissioner’s designee. | F. Random draw of the tied teams. |
If there is a three or more team-tie for a spot in the ACC Championship game, there are seven tiebreakers to decide the teams. The ACC will use these tiebreakers to first pick a representative for the Championship game and then once they determine a team, they will use the tiebreakers again for the remaining teams. | If the regular-season standings determine a clear conference champion and two or more teams are tied for second place, the conference champion will be the home team in the SEC championship game and the tiebreaking procedures will be used to determine its opponent. |
1. Combined head-to-head win-percentage among the tied teams if all tied teams are common opponents. | |
2. If all the tied teams are not common opponents, the tied team that defeated each of the other tied teams. | |
3. Win-percentage versus all common opponents. | |
4. Win-percentage versus common opponents based upon their order of finish (overall conference win-percentage, with ties broken) and proceeding through other common opponents based upon their order of finish. | |
5. Combined win-percentage of conference opponents. | |
6. The tied team with the highest ranking by the Team Rating Score metric provided by SportSource Analytics following the conclusion of regular season games. | |
7. The representative shall be chosen by a draw as administered by the Commissioner of Commissioner’s designee. | |
The ACC will apply these tiebreakers from No. 1 through the last one as needed to determine who makes it to the ACC Championship Game and also seeding. The ACC will also count conference games against post-season ineligible teams in the standings and with tiebreakers. |

The 2024 college football season is here with Week 0 kicking things off with three ACC teams playing. Florida State and Georgia Tech get things started in Ireland and later at night, SMU plays at Nevada. This season, California and Stanford join SMU in the new-look ACC.
There are a lot of team that care more than capable of winning the ACC Championship this year and any number of teams could find themselves in Charlotte on Dec. 7 for the ACC Championship Game. Headlining that list is 2023 champion Florida State, but the Seminoles are going to face their share of obstacles on the way. With that said, here is a final prediciton on how the ACC will shake out in terms of the standings in 2024.
Predicting the ACC football standings for 2024
Things get going this weekend and here is how things will look at the end of the season.
Rank | Team | ACC Record | Overall Record |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Florida State | 7-1 | 10-2 |
2 | Miami | 7-1 | 10-2 |
3 | Clemson | 6-2 | 9-3 |
3 | Virginia Tech | 6-2 | 10-2 |
3 | Louisville | 6-2 | 9-3 |
3 | NC State | 6-2 | 9-3 |
7 | SMU | 5-3 | 8-4 |
7 | North Carolina | 5-3 | 8-4 |
9 | Georgia Tech | 4-4 | 7-5 |
9 | California | 4-4 | 7-5 |
9 | Syracuse | 4-4 | 8-4 |
12 | Boston College | 3-5 | 5-7 |
12 | Pittsburgh | 3-5 | 5-7 |
14 | Wake Forest | 2-6 | 5-7 |
14 | Duke | 2-6 | 6-6 |
16 | Stanford | 1-7 | 3-9 |
16 | Virginia | 1-7 | 3-9 |
Things could get interesting at the top of the standings as the margin for error for all the teams will be thin. A lot of teams are going to be in the mix throughout November for a spot in the ACC Championship Game. Ultimately, Florida State and Miami will be the last two standing when all is said and done.

Like its peers across major college football, the ACC underwent quite a few changes since the end of the 2023 season, with Stanford, Cal and SMU now making it a 17-team league.
After a turbulent offseason in which Clemson and Florida State filed lawsuits against the conference, the fight among ACC schools will soon shift to somewhere much more exciting than a courtroom.
Here are power rankings of the ACC's football teams heading into the first full week of the 2024 season:
1. Clemson
This week: vs. Georgia (Atlanta)Clemson hasn't been playoff a contender past Week 4 in two of its last three seasons. An expanded field and savvy staff hires like Garrett Riley and Matt Luke could change that.
2. Florida State
This week: vs. Boston CollegeAn FSU team that was worthy (on paper) of the College Football Playoff last year reloaded for 2024 ... and opened its season with a demoralizing upset to Georgia Tech.
3. Miami
This week: at FloridaMiami has the talent to win the league. Whether it's enough to negate Mario Cristobal's gameday mismanagement and recent history of underachieving is another question.
4. Louisville
This week: vs. Austin PeayLouisville’s biggest concern may be health. Wideout Caullin Lacy is expected to miss half the season, and quarterback Tyler Shough has as many years in college as games played in a season (seven).
5. NC State
This week: vs. Western CarolinaEven without defensive stalwarts like Payton Wilson, the Wolfpack should be in good hands offensively with quarterback Grayson McCall.
6. Georgia Tech
This week: vs. Georgia StateBrent Key did an excellent job in his first full season last year, and seems ready to replicate it in 2024.
7. Virginia Tech
This week: at VanderbiltWith defensive tackle Aeneas Peebles and cornerback Dorian Strong back from a 7-6 team, the Hokies' improvement should continue.
8. North Carolina
This week: vs. MinnesotaUNC lost no fewer than five games in either of the last two seasons with quarterback Drake Maye. That run could linger as a missed opportunity.
9. SMU
This week: vs. Houston Christian
SMU won 11 games in 2023, but jumping from the AAC to the ACC won't be as easy as ABC.
10. Duke
This week: vs. ElonManny Diaz is a top defensive mind who should maintain Mike Elko’s excellent work on that side of the ball.
11. Pitt
This week: vs. Kent StateWhether Pitt rebounds from a woeful 2023 season depends on how it adapts to new offensive coordinator Kade Bell’s up-tempo scheme.
12. Boston College
This week: at Florida StateBill O’Brien has a proven record as a head coach and inherits a potential gem in quarterback Thomas Castellanos.
13. Syracuse
This week: vs. OhioFran Brown has ambitious goals for Syracuse and could achieve them at a place where it has been difficult recently to win.
14. Cal
This week: vs. UC DavisCal has a stud in running back Jaydn Ott, but its defense — coach Justin Wilcox’s expertise — has slipped the past two seasons.
15. Wake Forest
This week: vs. North Carolina A&TWake Forest won just four games last season, its fewest in a full season since 2015.
16. Virginia
This week: vs. RichmondTony Elliott’s two seasons with the Cavaliers have proven difficult, producing a 6-16 record.
17. Stanford
This week: vs. TCUA Stanford program that had been a national power is 17-37 over the past five seasons.

Aerial tour: Micron's $15 billion Boise expansion
We took an aerial tour of Micron Technology's $15 billion expansion at its plant in southeast Boise, Idaho
youtu.be
Micron project plods along in Central NY, but in Idaho they’re pouring concrete (PS; $; Coin)
While Micron Technology has slogged along for nearly two years with environmental studies and permits for its planned complex in northern Onondaga County, the company is already pouring concrete in Idaho.
Micron is building a three-story, 4-million-square-foot fabrication plant, or fab, next to its headquarters in Boise. The company plans to build up to four similar-sized plants in the town of Clay.
The Clay complex “will be built on very similar architectural and engineering design to what we have here in Idaho,” Scott Gatzemeier, Micron’s corporate vice president for front end U.S. expansion, told syracuse.com last year. “We’ll be applying it to Boise and then optimizing it as we as we move it to Clay.”
Micron announced plans for the Boise fab just a few weeks before it said it was going to build as many as four fabs near Syracuse.
But the project is much further along in Idaho, a state where Micron has its home base and that requires fewer environmental reviews before putting shovels in the ground.
You can see the scale of building just one fab in the video above of construction in Boise. The video was produced by online news site BoiseDev, which covers business and development in the rapidly growing Boise area.
Each fab is massive, standing three stories high and covering 28 acres of ground. A fab is as tall as the JMA Wireless Dome and takes up nearly four times as much land. Dozens of ancillary structures, including office buildings, parking garages and wastewater treatment plants, will sprawl across even more land.
Work on the Boise fab is humming along. The company will be pouring 15,000 tons of concrete per week and will soon have 30 cranes on the site, according to BoiseDev.
The general contractor, Exyte US, referred all questions to Micron’s media office, which did not respond to questions about the Boise construction.
Micron has received tentative federal funding and has applied for state and federal permits, for one fab in Boise and two fabs in the town of Clay. The two Clay fabs and ancillary buildings would sprawl over an area twice as big as the New York State fairgrounds.
Micron says the Boise fab would hire 2,000 new employees in Boise and up to 4,500 for two Clay fabs.
Micron announced the construction of the Boise fab on Sept. 1, 2022, just a month before the announcement for the Clay fabs.
Progress on the two projects immediately diverged.
By the end of October 2022, Micron had filed a detailed site plan with the city of Boise. No site plan has been filed in Clay. In June 2023, Micron applied to Boise to start pouring the fab foundation. Micron hasn’t applied for any building permits in Clay.
For its Clay fabs, Micron has yet to submit an extensive environmental review required under state law. Officials say the study will be released this year, with construction in Clay scheduled to start in spring 2025. That would be a year behind Micron’s original schedule.
At the same time, Micron is promising that the first Clay fab will produce computer chips faster than originally planned: 2028 instead of 2029.
Micron is one of the world’s leading producers of a computer memory chips used in cell phones, cars and other electronic devices. Micron says the Boise fab is expected to produce its first chips in 2026.
There are a number of possible reasons why the Boise project is well ahead of the one in Clay.
First, the $15 billion Idaho fab had a head start; Micron was ready with detailed drawings to submit to the city of Boise by fall 2022.
Second, Idaho has a much less cumbersome environmental process, so Micron didn’t have to prepare an extensive environmental report.
The federal CHIPS office has already released a draft environmental report for the Idaho project, saying that construction of the three-story fab in Boise would have no significant environmental impacts if Micron followed “best management practices.” Environmental groups have said the CHIPS office, which is also providing $6.1 billion for Micron’s Clay and New York projects, gave the Boise fab a superficial review.
Third, Micron already owned the site in Boise and the building was an extension of its long-standing research and development campus there.
In Clay, the proposed site of the Micron complex is still owned by Onondaga County and contains hundreds of acres of wetlands and forests. There are still three parcels in the Micron campus boundary that owners have not sold to Onondaga County.
Fourth, the Boise site had no wetlands, while a third of the site in Clay is wetlands. Wetlands are regulated by both the state and federal government, and Micron needs special permits to fill in about 200 acres of wetlands and over a mile of streams in Clay.
The next big step for the Clay project is the submission of the environmental report, which officials say will be sometime later this year, to the federal and state governments. Both must review the report and allow a month or more of public comment. The entire review could take several months.

Day 6 at the NYS Fair: Today’s handpicked menu and schedule (PS; Miller)
Sunday seemed like the unofficial Irish Day at the New York State Fair. The 78,341 visitors were treated to an old-fashioned session at Chevy Court hosted on by The Elders, a Celtic band from Kansas City, that drew in more and more folks as the music went on.
And six hours later, the Dropkick Murphys drew thousands of fans to Suburban Park for the night’s last concert. (Photos below)
Today is Law Enforcement Day, meaning active and retired officers get free admission by flashing their badge.
A longtime food and drink stand — Tommy C’s — has set aside a table in the Colonnade for the two law enforcement officers gunned down in April, and today will raise money for their families. The Meier’s Creek Brewing Co. created a special label to wrap around its Floatin’ On By pilsner. $1 from each can sold at the stand today will go to the families of fallen Onondaga County Sheriff’s Deputy Lt. Michael Hoosock and Syracuse Police Officer Michael Jensen.
When word spread Sunday about today’s fundraiser, fairgoers stopped by Tommy C’s to buy a can. A group of state troopers bought an entire case. By the time the Fair closed, Tommy C’s had run out of the beer and ordered more for today.
Today’s Menu
I’m at the Fair every day and night, and hey, a guy’s gotta eat (and drink). I write about food and drinks for syracuse.com and The Post-Standard, so I might as well as pass suggestions onto you while I’m working here. That said, I’m no expert. I rely on readers to tell me what’s good. If you find something that makes your tummy happy, text me at 315-382-1984 and I’ll give it a shot. I might join you for a meal or drink and pick up the tab.Lunch: Some colleagues raved about the chiktay from a soul-food stand in the Pan-African Village. I just smiled and pretended to know what the heck they were talking about. After reading their story and doing a little research, I had to give it a try, simply because I enjoy smoked fish.
Petu, located across from Henry’s Hen House, serves this traditional Haitian dish. It’s usually made with smoked herring, but Petu uses shredded cod, peppers, onions and spices. It’s best on the accompanying bread. This $15 small plate is a true treat, but be sure to save room for dessert.

Technical issues aside, Ying Yang Twins and Chevelle highlight ideal evening of music (NYS Fair review) (PS; Cresswell)
Saturday at the New York State Fair was one of those beautiful late summer nights where you start your day in a T-shirt and shorts, and end your night in an oversized hoodie.
Fair attendance spiked on Saturday, buoyed by two national touring acts playing at the fairgrounds: the Ying Yang Twins at Chevy Court and Chevelle and Suburban Park. Though sound issues plagued both performances, thousands of fans didn’t seem to mind one bit.
The Ying Yang Twins set opened with DJ Scientist performing a 15-minute mixtape of classic hip hop and R&B from the 1980s, 90s, and 00s. DJ Scientist alternated between his laptop, and the vinyl turntables, blending different eras of hip hop together. The mix ranged from DJ Snake and Lil Jon’s Turn Down for What to Nelly’s Hot in Herre to Ginuwine’s Pony and more contemporary songs like Bruno Mars’s 24K.
While the crowd was enjoying the mix, singing along to their favorite hooks, the DJ set went on for a noticeably long time and it felt like we went from getting hyped up for the Ying Yang Twins to simply waiting for them to come out on stage.
The Ying Yang Twins opened their set with Ying Yang in this Thang, which quickly transitioned into their 2003 hit, Salt Shaker. This was the formula for the evening with Kaine and D-Roc blending their songs together in a set that was as much a greatest hits medley than anything else.
