Welcome to National Wildlife Day!

National Wildlife Day was founded in 2005, "to bring awareness to the number of endangered animals nationally, as well as globally, that need to be preserved and rescued from their demise each year, and also to acknowledge zoos and outstanding animal sanctuaries and organizations globally" for their work to preserve animals and educate the population, especially children, about conservation. The day was made by Colleen Paige, founder of other animal themed days such as National Dog Day. With the passing of Steve Irwin, the Australian zookeeper and conservationist, known for his television show, The Crocodile Hunter, the date of the day was changed to coincide with his birthday.

Film Review: Kyle McCord dazzles from pocket in SU debut for career-best day (DO; Andrews)

Kyle McCord heard the jeers of Fran Brown after his forgettable first drive with Syracuse.

“Haha, you went three-and-out,” Brown said to his quarterback.

It wasn’t a pretty possession. McCord’s first pass sailed through Ohio linebacker Blake Leake’s hands. His lone completion went for six yards to Zeed Haynes. A final downfield toss intended for Oronde Gadsden II bounced off of Bobcats’ safety Austin Brawley. The Orange looked static, and were forced to punt. But Brown still felt comfortable with a joke.

“(I) just messed around with him because you know what he can do,” Brown said of McCord. “We have that type of relationship. You’ll be alright. Get them next time. You never worry.”

McCord quickly settled in on SU’s second drive and never looked back. He was poised in the pocket, picking apart Ohio’s secondary with well-anticipated throws, pristine footwork and rapid decision-making. The Ohio State transfer finished his Orange debut with 27 completions for 354 passing yards and four touchdowns — all career-highs.

Here’s a breakdown of McCord’s stellar Syracuse debut in its 38-22 season-opening victory over Ohio Saturday:

2nd quarter, 14:29 & 13:45 — 2 completions to Peña get McCord in rhythm

Down 6-0 to the Bobcats after the first quarter, McCord hadn’t found his rhythm. And he needed to — fast. Syracuse faced a third-and-4 at its own 31-yard line, in danger of suffering two straight three-and-outs.

Offensive coordinator Jeff Nixon called a gun-empty set for McCord, giving him time to see the field against a three-man Ohio pass rush with five options at his disposal. As McCord received the snap and went into a two-step drop back, he clearly positioned his eyes toward Gadsden, who ran a curl route in the left seam. But Ohio linebacker Shay Taylor blanketed SU’s tight end while defensive end Bradley Weaver drove right tackle Savion Washington deep into the pocket.

McCord stayed calm, rotating his eyes to the weak side where Trebor Peña was sandwiched in between two Bobcats defenders. He didn’t hesitate to fire a low, high-velocity ball to Peña, who fell to his right and corralled the five-yard first-down pickup.

The quarterback’s confidence and commitment to working from the pocket are among the most glaring differences between him and former SU quarterback Garrett Shrader. That’s what he did for the Orange to move the chains for the first time last Saturday, and it’s what he did two plays later to unleash his first big gain of the year.

On a second-and-10 at Syracuse’s 36-yard line, Peña lined up from the slot with McCord in the shotgun. Peña took advantage of Ohio’s 4-4 zone defense, running a go-route and quickly finding a cushion in between the Bobcats’ second and third levels of the defense.

McCord’s eyes were locked on Peña from the moment Ohio’s linebackers froze up on the snap. Reading the play from the start, he executed a perfectly-anticipated throw into the high-outstretched arms of Peña just before the Bobcats’ two high safeties could converge.

The 20-yard completion put SU into opposing territory for the first time all game. Two simple, but quick and accurate, decisions by McCord were his first signs of developing a rhythm in the pocket.

2nd quarter, 0:10 — 20-yard TD dime caps off superb 1-minute drill

Syracuse embarked on an eight-play, 75-yard drive in just 54 seconds to take a 17-9 lead into the half. Under former head coach Dino Babers, punting or conservative play calling would have been a likely option with 59 seconds left in the half. Yet, McCord’s high-level field vision is why Brown trusted his quarterback to deliver an improbable six points.

On a second-and-10 along the right hash marks of Ohio’s 20-yard line, Syracuse spread four receivers out wide and sported traditional protection. With 10 seconds left and no timeouts for the Orange, it was paramount for McCord to think fast.

“That situation is something that we’ve practiced a lot, especially in fall camp,” McCord said, detailing the play postgame. “It was really, take a shot in the end zone and if we don’t get it, we’re probably kicking a field goal.”

How many votes did Syracuse get in college football’s Top 25 polls? Where is Georgia Tech ranked? (PS; $; Carlson)

Syracuse football received one vote in the USA Today Coaches Poll for the second consecutive week but did not receive any votes in the AP Top 25 following its season-opening win over Ohio.

The Orange will have a chance to earn its first Top 25 win of the Fran Brown era on Saturday when it faces Georgia Tech in the JMA Wireless Dome at noon. The Yellow Jackets are ranked No. 23 in the AP Top 25 this week. They were not ranked in the USA Today Coaches Poll but sit first on the also receiving votes list.

The Orange earned a single point in the USA Today Coaches Poll, meaning one of the coaches in the poll picked Syracuse at No. 25 overall. Syracuse football coach Fran Brown has a vote in the poll. So do Ohio’s Tim Albin, Georgia Tech’s Brent Key and Georgia’s Kirby Smart.

The ACC, which saw traditional powers Florida State and Clemson suffer losses during the first week of play, will need one of its teams to emerge if it hopes to get multiple teams into the College Football Playoffs.

The ACC’s highest-ranked team this week is Miami (No. 12 AP/No. 15 USA Today). It has teams ranked at No. 22 in both polls with Clemson (USA Today) and Louisville (AP).

Here is a look at the two polls.

USA Today Coaches Poll

1. Georgia (51 first-place votes)
2. Ohio State (3)
3. Texas (1)
4. Alabama
5. Mississippi
6. Oregon
7. Notre Dame
8. Penn State
9. Michigan
10. Missouri

ACC Power Rankings: So much for that easy Syracuse football schedule (PS; $; Carlson)

There are only three ACC teams that are taken seriously when it comes to winning national titles. The season is a week old (not counting Week 0) and two of them have already lost.

The early losses by Clemson and Florida State (twice!) leave Miami alone to carry the flag as a potential national title contender from the conference. But the early results should have a bushel of teams thinking this is their chance for a special season.

That includes Syracuse, although the Orange schedule no longer appears quite as easy as many people (myself included) thought. Boston College and Georgia Tech have both toppled Florida State early and Pittsburgh seems to have made offensive improvements. Maybe this was the year to play Florida State and Clemson after all.

With karma coming for the two programs that have sued the ACC, here’s how I’d rank the league this week.

1. Miami

Record: 1-0 (0-0)
Last week’s ranking: 2
Last week’s result: Win 41-17 at Florida
This week’s schedule: Saturday vs. Florida A&M, 6 p.m., ACC Network Extra

Why No. 1? Miami’s roster looks talented enough to overcome any concerns about Mario Cristobal’s in-game strategy. Quarterback Cam Ward is the early ACC Player of the Year favorite after throwing for 385 yards against an SEC defense.

2. Louisville

Record: 1-0 (0-0)
Last week’s ranking: 5
Last week’s result: Win 62-0 vs. Austin Peay
This week’s schedule: Saturday vs. Jacksonville State, 3:30 p.m., ACC Network Extra

Why No. 2? Louisville didn’t really do anything to move up by thumping its FCS opponent but it didn’t do anything to lose ground or raise concerns. The Cardinals improved to 11-4 under head coach Jeff Brohm.

3. Boston College

Record: 1-0 (1-0)
Last week’s ranking: 13
Last week’s result: Win 28-13 at Florida State
This week’s schedule: Saturday vs. Duquesne, 3:30 p.m., ACC Network Extra

Why No. 3? The Eagles went on the road for their season-opener and beat a conference opponent. Boston College dominated and looked like a very well-coached team under the respected Bill O’Brien. The Eagles have traditionally built strong offensive lines. This one paved the way for three players to rush for more than 75 yards against the Seminoles.

4. Georgia Tech

Record: 2-0 (1-0)
Last week’s ranking: 1
Last week’s result: Win 35-12 vs. Georgia State
This week’s schedule: Saturday at Syracuse, Noon, ACC Network

Why No. 4? The Yellow Jackets stayed hot against Georgia State but the win over Florida State looks a little less impressive in hindsight. Through two games Georgia Tech is averaging 5.9 yards per carry, a major worry for a Syracuse defense that was gashed by Ohio last week.

Watch for Georgia Tech right tackle Jordan Williams, who is currently the highest-graded offensive tackle in the ACC by Pro Football Focus. Thanks to the COVID year he’s in his fifth year as a starting tackle with the Yellow Jackets. He already has 42 career starts.

5. Clemson

Record: 0-1 (0-0)
Last week’s ranking: 4
Last week’s result: Loss 34-3 vs. Georgia in Atlanta
This week’s schedule: Saturday vs. Appalachian State, 8 p.m., ACC Network

Why No. 5? There aren’t many (perhaps any) ACC teams that will be able to stay within a touchdown of Georgia for one half of football. But the season started with major questions about quarterback Cade Klubnik and he struggled mightily, averaging 4.9 yards per completion and throwing an interception.

When an offense is miserable even the best defense is going to break eventually and the Tigers eventually cracked in the second half. Clemson’s offense won’t remain this impotent against mere mortal opponents but how much will it improve?

6. North Carolina

Record: 1-0 (0-0)
Last week’s ranking: 9
Last week’s result: Win 19-17 at Minnesota
This week’s schedule: Saturday vs. Charlotte, 3:30 p.m., ACC Network

Why No. 6? A road win against a Big Ten team is a nice start. Unfortunately, it came with a price. North Carolina starting quarterback Max Johnson suffered a broken leg and is out for the year. The Tar Heels needed a missed 47-yard field goal at the final whistle to secure the win.

In something sure to amuse SU fans, the Golden Gophers (led by former AD Mark Coyle) set off a bunch of fireworks after the missed kick, a gaffe reminiscent of a premature train horn celebration after a dropped touchdown by the Orange in 2014.

North Carolina is hoping to ride running back Omarion Hampton (129 yards) this season, which should make life a little easier for Conner Harrell, presuming he takes the starting quarterback role. But the injuries to Johnson and Syracuse’s Marlowe Wax seem like two of the most impactful from around the league this week.

7. Pittsburgh

Record: 1-0 (0-0)
Last week’s ranking: 10
Last week’s result: Win 55-24 vs. Kent State
This week’s schedule: Saturday at Cincinnati, 7 p.m., ESPN2

Why No. 7? Putting up points against Kent State doesn’t guarantee Pittsburgh’s offensive woes are resolved but the 55 points were the most for the Panthers against an FBS opponent since scoring 76 against Syracuse in 2016 (Oops, you’ve probably been trying to forget that game).

If Alabama transfer quarterback Eli Holstein and new offensive coordinator Kade Bell can get something going on offense, Pittsburgh should enjoy a nice rebound year.

8. Syracuse

Record: 1-0 (0-0)
Last week’s ranking: 8
Last week’s result: Win 38-22 vs. Ohio
This week’s schedule: Saturday vs. Georgia Tech, Noon, ACC Network

Why No. 8? Syracuse’s offense looks dynamic with Kyle McCord under center but the Orange defense looks vulnerable in the run game. Losing Wax, the team’s leading tackler the past two seasons, isn’t going to help. He was SU’s highest-graded defender and tackler in the opener against Ohio according to Pro Football Focus. Tough timing with Georgia Tech set to visit.

Syracuse picks up trio of week one awards (orangefizz.net; Burstein)

It was easy to pick out good performances week one for Syracuse football. A 38-22 win over Ohio saw dominant offensive plays to go along with a few impressive defensive stands. Now people are starting to take notice, as Syracuse played picked up three individual awards in the days following the games.

Quarterback Kyle McCord had a career game, going for four touchdowns and 354 yards in the air. This was enough to land McCord a spot on the Davey O’Brien Great 8 list for week one.

Expectations were high for McCord after his offseason transfer from Ohio State and he for the most part lived up to the hype week one. After a slow first quarter, McCord was able to find eight different targets in the win.

One of those targets, Oronde Gadsden, found himself on a week one awards list as well. The tight end was playing in his first game in nearly a year due to a lisfranc injury. But it was hard to tell he had missed time.

The redshirt junior was named to the Pro Football Focus national team of the week as the lone tight end for his week one performance. Gadsden’s day was highlighted by a 28-yard touchdown reception in the second. He finished with seven receptions for over a hundred yards.

McCord Makes Davey O'Brien Great 8 - Syracuse University Athletics (cuse.com)

Quarterback Kyle McCord has been named to the Davey O'Brien Great 8 list for his week one performance vs. Ohio.

McCord completed 27-of-39 passes for 354 yards and four touchdowns, setting new career highs in completions, yards and touchdowns in the process, including his tenure at Ohio State.

He'll now face off in the conference opener this week against No. 23 Georgia Tech. Fans can get their tickets today for the first ranked opponent of the year at Cuse.com/Tickets.

McCord's four touchdown passes tied for fourth on the single-game program record list. Eric Dungey (2018) was the most recent player to throw for five. The four scores was a record for a player in their Syracuse debut.

McCord connected with eight different receivers on the day, as Trebor Pena (2), Oronde Gadsden II and LeQuint Allen were recipients of his touchdown throws.

Kickoff is slated for Noon in the Dome this week, with the NYE Auto Quad Walk taking place at 9:45 a.m. See you in the Loud House!

KYLE McCORD, SYRACUSE DEFENSE DOMINATE OHIO, 38-22 (newhousesports.com; Spinner)

The Syracuse Orange started their season on a high note Saturday, defending their home turf against the Ohio Bobcats, 38-22.

In his first game with the Orange, senior quarterback Kyle McCord completed 27 of his 39 passes for 354 yards and four touchdowns. The former Ohio State Buckeyes starter not only earned impressive numbers but made difficult throws look easy time and again.

First-year Syracuse head coach Fran Brown joked after the game about his gratitude to the Buckeyes for sending McCord to the Orange.

“Kyle’s a good football player,” Brown said. “I should send [Ohio State head coach] Ryan Day a bottle of champagne for allowing us to get him.”

McCord’s arm was not the only reason the Orange came out on top. Syracuse’s defense was tremendous, from the front four back to the safeties.

The Orange recorded four sacks, three pass breakups, and an interception against the Bobcats. Ohio’s offense was on the field for almost 14 minutes in the first quarter but managed just six points on two field goals after Syracuse held firm.

Brown said he wants to continue the pattern his team set of both sides of the ball working toward a win.

“If we put it all together, we’ll be playing really good complementary football,” Brown said.

Syracuse is back at the JMA Wireless Dome next weekend, hosting the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at noon on Saturday, Sept. 7.

Week 1 Recap (youtube; video; Syracuse Orange)

The Fran Brown era of Syracuse football starts with a win.

Syracuse football: New dome, new atmosphere earns positive reviews (TNIAAM; Fowler)

Everything about game day on Saturday in Syracuse felt electric. The finished dome, the new and improved quad walk, and a new head coach leading the charge. All was right for the near 40,000 passionate Syracuse Orange football fans sitting inside the renovated JMA Wireless Dome, eager to watch Fran Brown kick off the 2024 Syracuse football season.

“When you walk in the JMA Wireless Dome it looks like a professional arena and it looks great,” Syracuse University Athletic Director John Wildhack said.

The new dome did not disappoint. SU completed ‘phase two’ -which included the reseat, among a few other small renovations- of the dome construction plan in 2022, after the University finished working on the new roof, upgraded scoreboard, and air conditioning installation. And despite the max capacity being reduced by almost 7,000 seats from 49,057 to 42,784, it didn’t feel that way sitting in the press box watching the waves of Orange fans pour into the stadium.

Syracuse University also moved its student section behind the end zone in section 102, a 500-seat increase from SU’s previous student section location near SU’s tunnel entrance. I heard from several students affiliated with Otto’s Army, the official student section of Syracuse Athletics, that the initial reaction to this news was not as positive as expected, but after Saturday’s game, it’s safe to say that feeling has since changed.

Otto’s Army President RJ Joshi said he was ‘super proud’ of the student turn out, and that he and his organization are excited to raise the bar at future games this season.

“Otto’s Army was back and better than ever,” Joshi added. “The whole section was a sea of orange and I’m super proud of everyone who showed up and brought the energy.”

Fellow TNIAAM writer Christian DeGuzman and I discussed the lack of tradition on this Syracuse football team ahead of Saturday’s game. We agreed that the new quad walk could be just what the team needs, especially if SU continues to promote it well and draw a big crowd ahead of the game with worthwhile events and activities scheduled on the quad.

In the post game press conference, Orange WR Trebor Pena said the quad walk was ‘amazing’.

“I’ve never felt something like that before, and just seeing how the community came together to support us was just incredible,” Trebor Pena added. “I love the changes that have happened, and I’m just excited to see what happens next.”
Syracuse University has certainly turned a page in the last couple of years with athletics and for the better. Hopefully, the positive feedback continues to move the needle in the right direction for the best fans in all of college sports.

REUNITED: Camden, NJ police officer makes lasting mark on SU football coach Fran Brown (cnycentral.com; Wenkoski)

In the days after being named Syracuse football's head coach last December, Fran Brown spoke about a man from his past who helped shape him.

Brown's appeal to fans, players, and recruits alike is one rooted in his past. The son of a teenage mother,, Brown endured poverty and grew up surrounded by violent crime in Camden, New Jersey in the 1990s.

He had lost touch with the man he spoke of. On a trip to Camden this winter, our sports team was able to locate him.

Prince Burnett, a Camden police officer who taught the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program to over five thousand children throughout his career, left a lasting mark on Brown's childhood.

"He was always just a good cop, and they would come in with the D.A.R.E. dog and things like that- it was basically the opposite of what everything else was," said Brown earlier this year. The two met when Brown was in fifth grade.

When our team located Burnett in Camden, he remembered Brown as "intense, even back then."

"It was a 16 week program, and each week had something to do with D.A.R.E," said Burnett, now retired and in his early 60s.

"When we taught the program, we thought that if we could save one or two, then it was worth it. Looking back, to see how well he's (Brown) done, it was absolutely worth it."
"I wouldn't go do bad things because of him," said Brown. "He would always tell me different stuff that could happen."

"He'd say, 'if you get into trouble, call me. Tell the police to call me.'"
Burnett influenced a young Brown to the point of inspiring his future college major.

"He'd ask what I wanted to do when I got older," said Brown. "I'd say, 'I want to go to the NFL.' He'd say, 'well, what else do you want to do?' And I'd say 'I don't know, I'm going to the NFL.' And he'd say, 'you have to do something else.' So, I went into criminal justice because of him."

Brown graduated with a bachelors degree in criminal justice from Western Carolina University in 2006.

Syracuse football: first down offense vs Ohio Wall)

The Syracuse Orange offense got the 2024 season off to a very slow start, but once they got in a groove, boy did it look good. Let’s get to the first down breakdown...

How slow was the start? Well the Orange ran only four plays on offense in the first quarter. That’s not the way you’d like to start a new era, but thankfully the offense figured things out after that start and went on to put up 38 points and 480 yards.

Syracuse went to the air early in the first half and after the rough start, Kyle McCord was able to find Oronde Gadsden including this first touchdown.

In the second half, Syracuse flipped things and went to the ground more often. The balanced attack allowed the Orange to gain 82 yards on just five first-down throws.

Syracuse football: a look at the PFF grades from the Ohio game (TNIAAM; Chiappone)

Game one PFF grades are in for the Syracuse Orange following their 38-22 season-opening win over the Ohio Bobcats this past weekend. A debut for a mostly-new roster means there is a lot to unpack from a numbers standpoint.

The main takeaway: Syracuse’s offense shined pretty well across the board, while most of the orange and red grades stemmed from the defense. That’s something which mostly played out while watching the game and likewise does in the advanced numbers.

Here are the complete PFF grades for the Orange this past week as well as some of the general takeaways from the data:

Offense: skill positions

As expected, Syracuse’s top grades mainly came from the offense. Oronde Gadsden’s first game in nearly a year led to him earning the highest grade (90.1) on the entire roster. He ended up cracking PFF’s College Football Team of the Week for Week 1.

Trebor Pena (82.3), Kyle McCord (73.6), Jackson Meeks (72.1) and Zeed Haynes (69.5) all earned top-five spots among the Orange players this week. Again, Syracuse’s passing attack in Week 1 looked smooth pretty much outside of that first drive.

The passing success even extended to good passing grades for LeQuint Allen (73.5) and Will Nixon (72.8). Dan Villari and Umari Hatcher were the only two players with passing grades below 55.

CNY in the NFL: 20 players and coaches chasing the Super Bowl, including one of the league’s 100 best players (PS; $; Carlson)

At least 20 people with Central New York ties will be either playing or coaching in the NFL this season.

The group includes 14 players who played at Syracuse during their college careers, three players from Central New York high schools and four coaches who spent time with the Orange. Here’s a refresher on where they’re all playing this NFL season.

Local players

SirVocea Dennis, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: The Christian Brothers Academy product is in his second year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after making 13 tackles in 13 games as a rookie last season. Dennis is a backup inside linebacker in Tampa Bay’s 3-4 defense. He was a fifth-round pick out of Pittsburgh last year. He will have two years remaining on his rookie deal after this season.

Riley Dixon, Denver Broncos: A CBA product who played college football at Syracuse, Dixon is entering his ninth year in the NFL. He is playing this season with the Denver Broncos after winning a competition for the punting job in training camp. This is his second stint in Denver. He has also played for the New York Giants and LA Rams. He finished last season tied for 12th in the NFL in net yards per punt at 42.3. He will be a free agent after this season.

Casey Rogers, New York Giants: The Westhill product latched on to the New York Giants practice squad after going undrafted last year. Rogers, considered a gifted athlete for the defensive tackle position, recorded 34 tackles for Oregon last season. He also played college football for Nebraska. He is the son of former Syracuse lacrosse assistant coach Leland Rogers, who is now the head coach at SUNY-Cortland.

Syracuse players

Zaire Franklin, Indianapolis Colts: Considered SU’s top player in the NFL at the moment, Franklin has become the face of the Indianapolis Colts franchise. He was ranked among the 100 best players in the NFL (exactly at No. 100) by the NFL Network. Entering his seventh season, Franklin set the Colts franchise record for tackles in 2022 (167) and then broke that record last year (179). He reached a three-year contract extension with the franchise over the offseason that could be worth up to $31.1 million.

What does Georgia Tech being ranked mean for Syracuse? (orangefizz.net; Shalam)

Syracuse is riding high after a week one 38-22 win over Ohio, but things are going to get a little more interesting this week against Georgia Tech. Just a few minutes ago, the AP Top 25 Football College Poll dropped, with the Yellowjackets slotting in at No. 23. It’s the first time since the 2015 season GT has been ranked. The bump into the top 25 comes after Georgia Tech upset Florida State 24-21 in Dublin two weeks ago, and took care of Georgia State 35-12 this past weekend at home. So, what does this mean for the Orange, and does Syracuse have a shot to beat Georgia Tech this weekend? Let’s jump into all of that and more.

Chance to win

It cannot be emphasized how crucial it is for Syracuse to take down Georgia Tech on Saturday. It’s not as if the Yellowjackets are a team out of the Orange’s league, GT finished 7-6 last season. That was just one win better than SU. This year though is a totally different story. As noted above, Georgia Tech has come out the gate hot. Part of the reason the Yellowjackets have been so effective so far is their running game. GT has amassed 415 rushing yards in two games, which ranks second in all of college football. The key for Syracuse to win on Saturday is to simply stop the run. But, it’s not as easy as it sounds. Against Ohio this past weekend, SU struggled stopping the run, surrendereding 255 rushing yards. 203 of those yards came from one player, Bobcat running back Anthony Tyus III. Ohio picked apart the Syracuse run defense, which could be a troubling sign for Saturday especially with Marlow Wax not on the field.

Looking ahead

Heading into week two, five different ACC teams are ranked in the top 25. Syracuse is slated to play three of those teams. Those three being UMiami, NC State, and Georgia Tech. On top of that, Boston College received the second most votes for a team outside the ranked squads with 49. All of this means that Syracuse has a chance to break into the top 25 themselves. The Orange have been ranked since 2022, when they started the season 6-0. Since then, it’s been a struggle to get even close to the top 25. If Syracuse wants a shot at cracking the college football playoff or even just being ranked, it needs a win on Saturday against a quality Georgia Tech team.

Syracuse football: introducing the Pop-Tarts Bowl O’Meter (TNIAAM; Tomaiuolo)

Syracuse Orange fans, brace yourselves for a tradition like no other.

The Nunes Bowl O’Meter is back and better than ever... but with a new twist. You might recall last year’s Duke’s Mayo Bowl O’Meter or even 2022’s Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl O’Meter. This season, I’m proud to present the Pop-Tarts Bowl O’Meter, a tribute to your favorite toaster pastry.

The Pop-Tarts meter is seeking revenge on the college football committee. After following our advice and placing the Orange in the 2022 Pinstripe Bowl, the committee went astray last year, opting for SU in the Boca Raton Bowl over the Duke’s Mayo. I don’t know what that was all about, but this year, the future has never been clearer.

After a sluggish opening quarter, Syracuse got its act together and blew past Ohio, 38-22. With one of the best records in the country at 1-0, how will our new Bowl O’Meter reflect this success? Are Pop-Tarts in our future?

As you can see, there’s still a long way to go. Let’s check out where the “experts” predict the Orange to go bowling after Week 1:

The "ABC 5" replaces the "Magnificent 7"

WRAL Sports in Raleigh, NC did some excellent research, which they posted on their website in the article "Small Group Dominates ACC Broadcast TV Appearances - Should Money Follow?" Basically, they discovered that every ACC conference football game shown on ABC - except for the ACC Championship Games themselves - has involved at least one from a list of only five teams:

  • Florida State
  • Clemson
  • Miami
  • Notre Dame
  • N. Carolina
The last time a game was shown on ABC that didn't have one of those five teams? Black Friday 2019, when Virginia and Virginia Tech played on ABC.

The last games on ABC that didn't involve at least one of those five schools: Virginia and Virginia Tech on the day after Thanksgiving in 2019 and 2018.
NC State and Boston College played on ABC (and ESPN2, depending on where you were watching) in 2017.

https://www.si.com/college/georgiat...football-power-rankings-week-two-01j6tcxnb4mr (SI; Caudell)

Week one of ACC Football is now in the books.

It was not the best week in the ACC. Clemson laid an egg against Georgia, NC State struggled against Western Carolina, and Virginia Tech lost to Vanderbilt. Some other teams won but were not very inspiring in doing so. We are just one week in and it is tough to get a read on how things are going to play out in the confernece this season.

Here are my ACC Power Rankings heading into week two.

17. Florida State (0-2, 0-2). Preseason Ranking: 2

It is pretty jarring to see how bad Florida State has been. After losing a close game to Georgia Tech, they followed it up with a lifeless performance vs Boston College. The offense looks miserable and the defense has not come close to meeting the lofty expectations that were put on them. Last night's loss made Florida State look like a team that is going to struggle to make a bowl game.

16. Virginia Tech (0-1, 0-0). Preaseason Ranking: 5

Do I think Virginia Tech is the second-worst team in the ACC? No, but they had one of the worst performances when you consider their opponent, and losing to Vanderbilt gets you ranked dead last. There is still time for them to have a good season, but Saturday was an awful start for the Hokies.

15. Stanford (0-1, 0-0): Preseason Ranking: 15

Credit to Troy Taylor's team, they fought hard against TCU on Friday night and had chances to potentially pull off the upset against the Horned Frogs. The Cardinal should get their first win on Saturday when they host Cal Poly.

14. Cal (1-0, 0-0). Preseason Ranking: 10

When you are outgained by UC Davis and play a closer-than-expected game, this is where you end up in the early season power rankings. The Golden Bears could have been looking ahead to their trip to Auburn this week, but it was not a great first performance of the year for them. Star running back Jaydn Ott was held to 49 yards rushing.

13. Duke (1-0, 0-0). Preseason Ranking: 16

Duke was facing Elon this week and while they did get the win, it was not the prettiest. The Blue Devils won 26-3 and Maalik Murphy had a solid debut at quarterback, but now Duke finds themselves as underdogs when they go to Northwestern this weekend.

12. Wake Forest (1-0, 0-0). Preseason Ranking:17

I had ranked the Demon Deacons last heading into the season, but they did get a win vs NC A&T and it was more impressive than what Duke did. The Demon Deacons face Virginia this Saturday and while this might not be on every fans radar, both teams could use this win to try and get to a bowl game.

11. Pitt (1-0, 0-0). Preseason Ranking: 13

There are a couple of ways to look at Pitt's 55-24 win over Kent State. On one hand, the Panthers offense did look explosive, but the defense gave up 24 points to Kent State, who will likely be one of the worst teams in the country. 24 might not seem like a lot, but allowing a caliber of team like Kent State to score that many could spell trouble. Let's see how the Panthers look on Saturday vs Cincinnati.

10. Virginia (1-0, 0-0). Preseason Ranking: 14

Virginia is another team near the projected bottom of the ACC who had a non-convincing victory on Saturday. A win is a win though and after beating Richmond, the Cavaliers take on Wake Forest this Saturday in a big game for their bowl hopes.

9. SMU (2-0, 0-0). Preseason Rankning: 8

After a lackluster season opener vs Nevada, SMU blew out Houston Christian to get their second win of the year. SMU has an interesting trip this Friday night when they go to BYU and we might learn even more about the Mustangs on Saturday.

8. Syracuse (1-0, 0-0). Preseason Ranking: 11

It was a pretty good debut for Ohio State transfer Kyle McCord, who threw for over 350 yards against Ohio and Oronde Gadsden looked good in his return. The bad thing for Syracuse is that their run defense did not look good on Saturday and with arguably the ACC's best rushing team (Georgia Tech) coming to town this week, that is a hole that could be exposed in a big way.

7. North Carolina (1-0, 0-0). Preseason Ranking: 9

North Carolina got the win on the road vs Minnesota, but it came at a cost. Starting quarterback Max Johnson went down with an injury and is out for the season, leaving plenty of questions at that position for North Carolina. The defense performed pretty well (although against a horrible Minnesota offense) and the running game still looked strong. UNC should reach 2-0 after the play Charlotte this weekend.

https://www.backingthepack.com/nc-s...ek-1-wolfpack-clemson-miami-lol-florida-state (backingthepack.com; PirateWolf)

We’re one week (and some change) into the season, so we’ve seen all ACC teams in action now - and a few twice (lol, Florida State). Let’s throw some crazy small-sample-size power rankings out there!

Since I don’t care about being right, these are going to change dramatically from week to week. Yell at me in the comments; I don’t care.

1. Miami (last week: 41-17 W @ Florida)

Hard to find a more impressive win last week than what the Hurricanes did the Gators. Just one game into the season and Florida fans are already talking about when - not if - Billy Napier gets fired. Cam Ward looked as good as advertised in his debut for Mario Cristobal’s squad. We won’t learn much more about Miami for a while as their next three games are against Florida A&M, Ball State, and South Florida.

2. Boston College (last week: 28-13 W @ Florida State)

As impressive as Georgia Tech’s win over Florida State was, Boston College’s was even better. In Tallahassee in the first game under a new coach and the Eagles dominated the Seminoles in every facet of the game. Bill O’Brien was a great hire for BC but it looks like he’s going to pay dividends sooner than expected. Next up is a home game against Duquesne before a road trip to Missouri.

3. Georgia Tech (last week: 35-12 @ vs Georgia State)

The Yellow Jackets didn’t stomp the Panthers straight out of the gate, but they were never really threatened in their follow-up to the huge season-opening win over Florida State in Ireland. The offense is going to live and die by Haynes King, and limiting the hits he takes while running is going to be key to the team outpacing expectations this year. Next up is a road trip to Syracuse.

4. Louisville (last week: 62-0 W vs Austin Peay)

Austin Peay managed to barely break the century mark in total yards as Louisville rolled to an easy win over the Governors. Texas Tech transfer QB Tyler Shough looked fantastic in his debut while the running game looks to have a lot of threats. Another layup against Jacksonville State is up next before a big showdown with Georgia Tech to open ACC play for the Cardinals.

5. Pittsburgh (last week: 55-24 W vs Kent State)

Last year’s Pitt squad was atrociously bad, which almost cost Pat Narduzzi his job, but in their season opener this year the Panthers looked the part. Under first-year offensive coordinator Kade Bell (son of Western Carolina head coach Kerwin Bell), the Pitt offense hummed to 567 yards. The defense is going to be solid per the norm under Narduzzi, so Pitt, but the schedule isn’t very easy so getting to bowl eligibility could still be a battle. Next week features a road trip to Cincinnati

6. North Carolina (19-17 W @ Minnesota)

A road win over a Big Ten team has to hold some value, but Minnesota did about everything it could to lose that game, missing two field goals and fumbling deep in their own territory to set up an easy UNC field goal. The big item coming out of the game is the loss of starting QB Max Johnson for the remainder of the season with a broken leg. The Texas A&M transfer wasn’t the sharpest, but was starting to get into a groove when the injury occurred in the 2nd half. Before you put too much into the Tar Heels defensive performance, keep in mind that Minnesota averaged just over 18 points/game last year against P5 teams. The schedule is super forgiving for working in a new QB as the next two games are against Charlotte, NC Central, and James Madison.

7. SMU (59-7 W vs Houston Christian)

The Mustangs dominated a team that I didn’t know previously existed in the exact manner that you’d expect them to, but SMU struggled mightily the week prior against a Nevada squad that tallied all of four total wins over the two prior seasons. For that reason, they’re here. The good news for SMU is that it looks like they shored up their faults in the week-plus since that game at the Wolf Pack (hopefully the Wolfpack can make that same adjustment). The bad news is that you can’t really learn much from a game against the... checks notes... Huskies. The schedule gets very unforgiving with BYU and TCU up next.

8. Virginia (34-13 W vs Richmond)

A prove-it year for Tony Elliott in Charlottesville started out by jumping out to a 20-0 lead on Richmond and cruising to an easy victory. Can’t ask for much more. The offense was great and the defense did what it needed to. ACC play starts this week for the Wahoos at...

9. Wake Forest (45-13 W vs NC A&T)

Like Pat Narduzzi and Pitt, Wake’s 2023 season also went off the rails in a surprising fashion. And like the Panthers, the Deacs opened up 2024 looking like they’re ready to remove themselves rapidly from last season’s debacle. Former Boise State and Louisiana Tech QB Hank Bachmeier is at the helm of the offense now, leading that group to over 500 yards in the win over the Aggies. The game against the Cavaliers this week is going to tell us a lot about both squads... or maybe not.

10. NC State (38-21 W vs Western Carolina)

Not much to discuss here. NC State looked primed for upset much of the night against the Catamounts before pulling away late. As discussed in these parts, the Pack’s performance was better than the score indicated, but there’s a lot to clean up before taking on Tennessee in Charlotte this coming Saturday night.

11. Duke (26-3 W vs Elon)

Game One under new coach and old friend Manny Diaz was a win. The game was never in doubt as the Duke defense held the Phoenix to 140 total yards, but I’m sure there were hopes the Blue Devils would muster a better offensive showing (350 yards). Elon kicked the sad field - a 39-yarder with 14 seconds left - to avoid the shutout. The Nerd Bowl is up next with a matchup against Northwestern, followed by games against UConn and Middle Tennessee State. Diaz’s team should be 4-0 heading into their game against North Carolina.

12. Syracuse (38-22 W vs Ohio)

It was a slog for much of the game for the Orange, but Fran Brown’s debut resulted in a win. Still, allowing 436 yards to Ohio is not a great look. The good news for Syracuse is that it still has LeQuint Allen and Oronde Gadsden, both of whom are still studs. New QB Kyle McCord looked like a huge upgrade over what Syracuse had last year, but that defense is going to have to get it together if bowl hopes are to be realized. There aren’t any more warm ups as ACC play starts this week with a game against Georgia Tech.

https://www.tarheelblog.com/2024/9/...minnesota-clemson-georgia-miami-florida-state (tarheelblog.com; Ferenchick)

Monday night’s Florida State vs. Boston College game saw the first full week of the 2024 college football come to a close. The North Carolina Tar Heels opened their year with a victory, albeit a terrifying one, as Minnesota just missed a potential game-winning field goal in the final seconds, as UNC won 19-17.

Elsewhere around the country, pretty much every other team either opened their year or played their second game of the season, which included everyone in the ACC. With the week now in the books, let’s check in on what happened and look at how the conference is shaping up with this week’s power rankings.

1. Miami (1-0)

Last Week: Beat Florida 41-17

We’ve seen plenty of false dawns for Miami being “back” in their time in the ACC, and obviously it’s far too early to make any sort of definitive conclusions about it this time. That being said, that was a very impressive display by them to go into “The Swamp” and crush Florida, no matter what shape the Gators may be in.

This Week: Saturday vs. Florida A&M

2. Clemson (0-1)

Last Week: Lost 34-3 to Georgia

There’s no real shame in losing to Georgia, but considering the echelon the Tigers wish to be in the college football world, that was not a great display from them.

This Week: Saturday vs. Appalachian State

3. Louisville (1-0)

Last Week: Beat Austin Peay 62-0

Working in a new quarterback in Tyler Shough, the Cardinals had absolutely no issues with their FCS opponent.

This Week: Saturday vs. Jacksonville State

4. North Carolina (1-0)

Last Week: Beat Minnesota 19-17

A win is a win, especially when it comes to road power conference opponents, but there are some things the Heels will certainly hope to improve on going forward.

This Week: Saturday vs. Charlotte

5. Georgia Tech (2-0, 1-0 ACC)

Last Week: Beat Georgia State 35-12

On the heels of their upset over Florida State in Ireland — and at this point, you can maybe put “upset” in quotation marks, the Yellow Jackets held serve in their return stateside.

This Week: Saturday at Syracuse

6. NC State (1-0)

Last Week: Beat Western Carolina 38-21

As UNC were battling Minnesota on Thursday, State had an unexpectedly tough game against a pesky Western Carolina team. While the Catamounts may end being a very good FCS team, trailing going into the fourth quarter, was not what the Wolfpack would’ve wanted.

This Week: Saturday vs. Tennessee

7. Boston College (1-0, 1-0 ACC)

Last Week: Beat Florida State 28-13)

It’s a bit hard to know exactly what to do with BC — and Georgia Tech for that matter — since, on paper, their wins are good, but it’s unclear how good.

This Week: Saturday vs. Duquesne

8. Duke (1-0)

Last Week: Beat Elon 26-3

The Blue Devils had no real issues with FCS Elon.

This Week: Friday at Northwestern

9. SMU (2-0)

Last Week: Beat Houston Christian 59-7

After playing Nevada unexpectedly close, SMU bounced back with an easy win.

This Week: Friday vs. BYU

10. Pitt (1-0)

Last Week: Beat Kent State 55-24

The offense has been the Panthers’ major flaw in the years following their ACC title, but incoming transfer quarterback Eli Holstein showed some good signs in Pitt’s win over Kent State.

This Week: Saturday at Cincinnati

11. Wake Forest (1-0)

Last Week: Beat North Carolina A&T 45-13

The Deacs played A&T close for a half before pulling away.

This Week: Saturday vs. Virginia

12. Florida State (0-2, 0-2 ACC)

Last Week: Lost to Boston College 28-13)

On true talent level, FSU obviously shouldn’t be close to this low, but at this point, they’ve done really nothing to show that they’re a good team. I still think it’s more likely than not that they end up one of the better teams by the end of the season, but right now: yikes.

This Week: Bye

13. Virginia Tech (0-1)

Last Week: Lost 34-27 to Vanderbilt (OT)

The Hokies were some people’s sleeper pick to sneak into the ACC title game, but they definitely looked asleep in losing to Vandy.

This Week: Saturday vs. Marshall

14. Syracuse (1-0)

Last Week: Beat Ohio 38-22

The Fran Brown era got off to a winning start in the Orange’s victory over Ohio.

This Week: Saturday vs. Georgia Tech

Syracuse University has withdrawn a demolition permit application for the vacant mansion it owns at 727 Comstock Ave. after two city boards have recommended protecting the house because of its historical value. (Dennis Nett | dnett@syracuse.com)Dennis Nett | dnett@syracuse.com

https://www.syracuse.com/news/2024/...rat-house-scales-back-massive-dorm-plans.html (PS; $; Boyer)

Syracuse University has scaled back plans for a new student dormitory after encountering resistance from city officials, neighbors and historic preservationists.

Just ahead of a Syracuse Common Council vote this week on whether to protect a vacant mansion SU owns on Comstock Avenue, the university withdrew a demolition application filed in the spring as part of the dorm project. The school wanted to remove the 119-year-old structure and carve out the hillside on which it stands to make room for a wing of the new dorm that would also serve as its main entrance.

SU has also filed revised plans with the city of Syracuse Planning Commission for the dorm project, reducing it from a 703-bed facility to one with 570 beds.

In addition to removing 727 Comstock Ave. from the site plans, the school reduced the building’s proposed height from six stories to five at the end where it overlooks the Thornden Park E.M. Mills Rose Garden across Ostrom Avenue. Caretakers of the garden were concerned about the impact of the dorm’s shadow on the rose plants. A revised shadow study based on the new building height adds another hour of daylight before a shadow begins to cross into the garden.

Over the university’s opposition, the Syracuse Landmark Preservation Board and the City Planning Commission have both recommended designating the Comstock Avenue mansion as a locally protected site, which would require a much more rigorous process for securing a demolition permit. Several historic preservation advocates rallied behind saving the building in written and oral comments delivered to both boards.

The Syracuse Common Council gets the final say in the designation process, and councilors were set to vote Tuesday on the matter.
