Welcome to National Chocolate Milkshake Day!

National Chocolate Milkshake Day is dedicated to the chocolate version of the frothy and thick drink, that is usually made with milk, ice cream, and flavored syrup. Milkshakes were first mentioned in print in Britain in 1885, and may have contained whiskey at the time. By the turn of the 20th century, they were seen as being more wholesome, and the alcohol was replaced with syrups such as chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. Another version of the milk shake, the malted milkshake, was invented in 1887. This shake added malted milk, which consists of a mixture of evaporated milk, wheat flour, and malted barley. Other names for a milkshake include frappé, frosted, thick shake, and cabinet, which is the term used in Rhode Island. Milkshakes have traditionally been sold in many places: malt or soda shops, ice cream shops, diners, fast food restaurants, and other similar type of establishments. Many times milkshakes are made with a blender using a stainless steel cup. As not all of the milkshake always fits in a glass, the stainless steel cup with the extra mixture is brought to the table with a spoon.

Improved wide receiver room bolstering Syracuse's potent air attack (DO; Stepansky)

Fran Brown’s first offseason was highlighted by acquiring star quarterback Kyle McCord from the transfer portal. While McCord was instantly surrounded by running back LeQuint Allen Jr. and tight end Oronde Gadsden II, Syracuse’s receiving corps needed to make vast improvements to aid its ensuing pass-heavy offense.

The Orange had just three receivers total over 300 receiving yards last season and only Damien Alford eclipsed the 500-yard mark. Through two games in 2024, Syracuse already has four at 75 or more.

“It makes my job a lot easier when you look across the field and there’s mismatches everywhere,” McCord said following SU’s win over then-No. 23 Georgia Tech.

Brown retained Umari Hatcher, SU’s second-leading receiver in 2023, and slot receiver Trebor Peña. He then brought redshirt freshman Zeed Haynes and senior Jackson Meeks with him from Georgia. And to lead the group, Brown tapped former New England Patriots wide receivers coach Ross Douglas to help develop professional talent.

With a litany of options, the Orange rank fourth in the nation in passing yards per game at 367.5. The added weapons have helped McCord throw the most passing touchdowns (eight) in Division I, with Peña tied for the nation’s lead in receiving touchdowns (four). Overall, SU’s receivers rank sixth best in the nation, according to Pro Football Focus, grading at 78.4.

“From the time I got here in late December to now, there’s been tremendous growth from everybody in the room,” Douglas said. “That’s a testament to the work they put in and believing in what I’m teaching them.”

Douglas first made a connection with Brown as a graduate assistant at Rutgers in 2020. At the time, he was a 24-year-old defensive assistant while Brown coached the Scarlet Knights’ secondary.

The two went their separate ways when Douglas left to be Richmond’s secondary coach and Brown left the following year to join Kirby Smart’s staff at Georgia. Douglas then got the opportunity to join Bill Belichick in New England through the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship. The opportunity started as a three-day internship, but quickly became a three-day interview, according to Douglas. At the end, he was hired as a full-time defensive quality control coach.

When Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels took the Las Vegas Raiders head coaching job, he brought much of his offensive staff with him. As a result, Belichick needed a wide receivers coach. Even though Douglas had played and coached defense his entire career, Belichick chose him for the job.

Under Belichick, Douglas learned the ins and outs of the position.

“He helped me with the attention to detail,” Douglas said of Belichick. “There are a lot of things that people do, but you boil it down to what the receiver actually has to do. He helped me teach the position from a fundamental standpoint.”

Following the 2023 season, Belichick departed and so did Douglas. He reunited with Brown, joining Syracuse’s staff in the same role. With the Orange, Douglas has been comparing players he worked with in New England to the skill sets in the SU room. He emphasizes it by putting on the film for each player he sees similarities to.

“It’s not just me saying something and them having blind faith in it,” Douglas said. “I’m telling you and I’m showing you why this will work. Because this works on Sundays. So if it works on Sundays, it for damn sure will work on Saturdays.”

For Peña, Douglas compares him to Demario Douglas, a 5-foot-8 sixth-rounder in the 2023 NFL Draft who blossomed into the Patriots’ leading receiver late last season. Demario is often used in a variety of roles, playing dynamic in the slot and dangerous with the ball in his hands.

When healthy, Peña has shown an ability to do the same. After a limited role from 2020-22, Peña didn’t appear in any games in 2023 due to injury. Though with the hiring of Brown, who recruited Peña to Temple years earlier, he improved himself in the offseason.

ACC football programs plug and play transfer portal QBs with strong early success (PS; $; AP)

Quarterbacks come and go, especially these days where several ACC teams have had quick success with new passers who have had only a few months on campus.

Several first-year passers with experience are making an immediate impact: Syracuse’s Kyle McCord, Miami’s Cam Ward and Wake Forest’s Hank Bachmeier are among the country’s top 10 quarterbacks after transferring.

“Sometimes it’s seamless, sometimes it takes a while,” said N.C. State coach Dave Doeren, who had Virginia’s Brennan Armstrong for a season last year before adding Grayson McCall from Coastal Carolina this fall.

Seamless or not, it’s a new plug-and-play reality for college football.

Making the right choice

Miami coach Mario Cristobal wanted more consistency. He added Ward, the Washington State standout who was voted ACC preseason player of the year before taking a snap for Hurricanes.

Ward has excelled, becoming the first quarterback in Miami’s long, talent-filled history to throw for 300 yards or more in his first two games.

Cristobal found a willing, fifth-year player in Ward, prepared to do what it takes for the 10th-ranked Hurricanes.

“He takes it on every single day. He wants to make this team better. He wants to make sure we stay a driven, unselfish, hardworking team,” Cristobal said.

McCord is doing big things at Syracuse for first-year coach Fran Brown. He already provided a signature victory as the Orange defeated then-No. 23 Georgia Tech 31-28 last week. McCord passed for 381 yards and four touchdowns.

Players finding the right fit

ACC Network analyst and former Florida State quarterback EJ Manuel thinks it’s essential for transfer players like Ward and McCord to find a program that fits their talents.

“A lot of these players that do go into the portal are choosing landing spots that match their skill set,” he said. “That’s really important.”

Bachmeier, the fifth-year player at Wake Forest, played at Boise State and Louisiana Tech. He is ninth nationally with 666 passing yards and four touchdowns.

At Pitt, one-time Alabama passer Eli Holstein has the Panthers off to a 2-0 start for the first time since they won the ACC title in 2021. Holstein rallied Pitt from 21-points down to beat Cincinnati 28-27 last week with 302 yards and three touchdowns. Holstein, a second-year freshman, is 12th in the country with 638 passing yards.

Syracuse Football's Defense can IMPROVE in One Category | Syracuse Orange Podcast (youtube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)

Syracuse Orange Football has forced one turnover through the first two games. It was a James Heard interception off a batted ball from Maraad Watson, which contributed to Syracuse's win over Ohio. Aside from that, Fran Brown's squad hasn't taken the ball away.

Jackson Holzer believes Syracuse needs to create more turnovers on Locked On Syracuse.

Syracuse football will get a visit from 5-star edge who just de-committed from FSU (itlh; Adler)

Five-star prospect Javion Hilson, an elite edge rusher in the 2025 class who hails from Florida, plans to visit Syracuse football and various other suitors coming up, according to a national recruiting expert.

The 6-foot-5, 245-pound Hilson, a consensus top-75 national prospect in the high school senior class, said via his X page on September 8 that he was de-committing from fellow Atlantic Coast Conference school Florida State and reopening his recruitment.

In a post on X this week, On3's Hayes Fawcett noted that Hilson plans to take visits to at least seven schools, and possibly more than that. The seven teams mentioned in Fawcett's social media post include the Orange, Florida, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Texas A&M and Michigan.

Syracuse football: how should we feel about the rest of the Orange’s schedule? (TNIAAM; Chiappone)

The Syracuse Orange are off to a perfect 2-0 start in the Fran Brown era after two weeks, but there is plenty of football left to go this season.

Syracuse will obviously be in control of its own final destiny, mainly based on how the program plays the rest of the way. However, it also helps to keep in mind where the Orange stack up versus the rest of its schedule now compared to the start of the year.

That’s the question we’re asking today: how do we feel about the path ahead for the Orange moving forward given that we know more about this team and the rest of program’s upcoming opponents compared to a few weeks back?

After going through a bye this week, the rest of the schedule now looks like this:

The rest of Syracuse’s 2024 schedule

StanfordSept. 20Home24.8%0.2%
Holy CrossSept. 28HomeN/AN/A
UNLVOct. 4Road93.3%9.6%

CaliforniaNov. 16Road91.1%9.4%

No. 10 MiamiNov. 30Home99.1%40.1%
The updated numbers say a lot about the path ahead for the Orange. For starters, Syracuse should be favorites versus Stanford and Holy Cross both in the Dome. You’d expect Fran and company to keep the mentality of playing each opponent like it was one game at a time. If we take a step back and look at the bigger picture, the next “real big test” for Syracuse will be the October road trip away from the 315.

Syracuse in the NFL: 2024 Week 1 results (TNIAAM; Ostrowski)

Syracuse Orange football is off this week, but SU alums in the NFL won’t have much rest over the coming weeks as their seasons get underway. Here’s how each faired over the Opening Weekend:

Matthew Bergeron - The former 2nd round pick did not start his second NFL season on the best note, allowing three pressures including a sack in Atlanta’s loss to Pittsburgh. PFF gave him a meager 29.5 pass-blocking grade - easily the worst of his career - as he was no match for the Steelers’ Alex Highsmith.

Andre Cisco - Contributed four tackles (two solo) as part of a strong defensive effort, but was beat once for a long touchdown as the Jags lost the battle of Florida’s Atlantic Coast to the Dolphins 20-17.

Tommy DeVito - Tommy Cutlets did not make an appearance on Sunday, despite Daniel Jones struggling immensely in the New York Giants’ 28-6 loss to Minnesota - his average of only 4.4 yards per pass and passer rating of 44 and change are all the omens you need for a QB change.

Riley Dixon - The Denver Broncos’ punter may be entitled to overtime pay after booting the ball away eight times with nearly a 50-yard average in their loss to the Seahawks. Not only that, he pinned Seattle at their own 1-yard line on a 65-yard punt, setting up one of Denver’s two safeties on the afternoon. #SpecialTeamsMatter

Game of the week

No. 24 Boston College (2-0) at No. 6 Missouri (2-0), 12:45 p.m., Saturday (SEC Network). In a week without an Atlantic Coast Conference game on the schedule, many eyes will be on the Eagles and Tigers, where points could be hard to come by. Boston College has won its first two game s under first-year coach Bill O'Brien and got into the rankings for the first time since the 2018 season. The Eagles have relied on a strong defense and quarterback Thomas Castellanos in their perfect start. Boston College is tied for second in the ACC in overall defense, allowing 214 yards per game. That included holding Florida State to just 21 yards rushing in a 28-13 victory two weeks ago. Castellanos has accounted for seven touchdowns in two games. Missouri of the Southeastern Conference has shutout its first two opponents.

Power 4 showdowns

West Virginia (1-1) and Pitt (2-0) renew the Backyard Brawl in the 107th meeting of a series that dates to 1895. The Panthers have won their first two games for the first time since they won the ACC championship in 2021. Alabama transfer quarterback Eli Holstein is off to a fast start, averaging 319 passing yards a game with six touchdowns. Tailback Desmond Reid leads the ACC with 146 yards a game rushing.
No. 5 Ole Miss (2-0) plays at Wake Forest (1-1) with the Rebels looking for their first win over the Demon Deacons (0-2). It's the first time these teams have played since 2008. Mississippi, of the SEC, has won 16 of 18 nonconference games under coach Lane Kiffin. Wake Forest rusher Demond Claiborne has averaged 110 yards a game this season.

Give me your 2 cents worth! (RX; HM)

Give me your 2 cents worth!

(of course, 2 dollars or more would be even better!)

small change
I began this blog on February 14th, 2012 - Valentine's Day, which is ironic because it has always been a "labor of love." That's more than a dozen years ago now, and a lot of blood, sweat, and tears (and burning the candle at both ends) have come and gone, but the blog is still here - for now.

During all those years, I've never charged you a subscription - the content has remained 100% free for you to read as often as you like... link to it, use it as a reference for stats, historical data, tv schedules, whatever!
Every time I've considered requiring a subscription, I kept coming back to the fact that there aren't a lot of free college sports sites any more, much less ACC football sites! If I want to reach ACC football fans, the last thing I want is a paywall between me and you.
But, while the ACCFootballRx blog may be free to you, that doesn't mean that it's free to produce. In addition to my time, computer, electricity, etc., it also costs money to access certain data. And, let's face it, advertisements for blogs just don't pay all that well.
That's where you come in. I really don't want to ask you to pay a subscription! So, if you find this blog valuable, educational, entertaining, funny, or (hopefully) a combination of all of those things, I'd appreciate if you could help out with the costs...

New York faces tough competition for national chip lab (PS; $; TNS)

New York state’s bid to land a new national computer chip research center is facing considerable competition from other states, including Oregon.

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer of New York authored the $52 billion CHIPS and Science Act that is providing the U.S. Commerce Department with $5 billion to create a National Semiconductor Technology Center, or NSTC.

Schumer has said he had Albany NanoTech in mind to host the federal research center when he wrote the CHIPS Act, which also is funding tens of billions of dollars in grants and loan guarantees that have been offered to chip manufacturers to build new factories and expand existing ones on U.S. soil.

But other states and regions across the U.S. are also trying to win the NSTC, which will include three distinct research “hubs” that may be established in different locations.

Many of the states in competition with New York have established semiconductor sectors. That includes the Portland, Ore., area, where Intel, the world’s largest chipmaker, has a large research and development operation.

The state of Oregon believes that Hillsboro, a suburb of Portland where Intel has its operations, is the perfect location for the NSTC.

Anca Matica, press secretary for Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek, said Tuesday that the Silicon Forest, as the Oregon semiconductor cluster calls itself, has more than 40,000 employees, which is 15% of the entire U.S. semiconductor sector.

“The semiconductor industry is a priority industry for the Oregon economy,” Matica said. “Not only are semiconductors Oregon’s largest export, but Oregon is home to more than 200 semiconductor and semiconductor supply chain businesses.”

The Palisades Center mall in West Nyack is the 13th largest mall, by leasable area, in the nation.Google Maps

Things keep getting worse for Destiny USA’s owner: It’s close to losing a major New York mall (PS; $; Moriarty)

Just when it looked like things couldn’t get worse for Destiny USA’s owner, they have.

As it struggles to avoid foreclosure on its giant Syracuse mall, Pyramid Management Group just lost control of a nearly identical mall in the New York City area and may soon lose ownership of it.

Judge Francis A. Kahn III of state Supreme Court in New York County ordered the appointment of a receiver Aug. 12 to take control of Palisades Center in West Nyack.

That stripped Pyramid from managing and collecting money from the Rockland County mall. And it means Pyramid is one step closer to losing the mall altogether.

With 2.2 million square feet of leasable space, Palisades is only slightly smaller than Destiny USA, the largest mall in New York.

Like Destiny, Palisades is worth a fraction of what it was just a few years ago. At both malls, Pyramid’s debt far surpasses the value of the properties.

And like Destiny, the downstate mall is loaded with debt that Pyramid is having trouble paying off.

Pyramid, the development company founded by the late Robert Congel, is in default on a $418.5 million mortgage on Palisades, and a trust representing lenders filed to foreclose on the mall last year. The trust wants to sell the mall to collect at least some of what it is owed.

Pyramid CEO Stephen Congel, the company founder’s son, said in a statement to syracuse.com | The Post-Standard the company is hoping to work out a deal with lenders that will allow it to retain Palisades.

“We have made multiple proposals to the lender on Palisades Center in an effort to resolve the issue,” Congel said. “We are working collaboratively with the court and receiver. It is our goal to reach a resolution that keeps Pyramid the owner and manager of Palisades Center.”

For now, though, the court-appointed receiver replaces Syracuse-based Pyramid as Palisades’ operator while the foreclosure proceeding moves along. Under the judge’s order, the receiver will manage the mall, collect rents from its tenants and hold onto any revenue, after management and maintenance costs are paid, until the center can be sold to satisfy its debts.

The move comes as Pyramid is facing a potential foreclosure action on Destiny USA, Onondaga County’s last remaining mall.

Pyramid’s loss of control of Palisades gives a preview of what could happen with its Syracuse mall. It’s possible Destiny USA’s lenders could do the same thing: foreclose and seek to sell the mall to someone else.
