Welcome to National Great American Pot Pie Day!

National Great American Pot Pie Day celebrates a distinctly American pie, the pot pie. The day was created in 2002 by Marie Callender's, a company that makes frozen pot pies, among other things. The original intention was for the day to be celebrated on the first day of fall, but September 23 continued to be the day of its celebration after it was first celebrated on that day. Although pot pies are similar to meat pies, they are an American creation, and were first referred to in print in the United States in 1785. They usually consist of a meat such as chicken, pork, or beef, and most times include vegetables such as carrots, peas, green beans, and potatoes. Another common ingredient is gravy. A top flaky crust is the norm, and there is usually a bottom crust as well, but not always. Besides being either made at home or bought at a restaurant, they can be bought frozen at a store. The first frozen pot pies were chicken, and were introduced by Swanson foods in the early 1950's.

Axe: How does Syracuse football recover from pothole it stepped in against Stanford? (Mailbag) (PS; $; Axe)

Axe me your questions and I’ll tell you no lies.

The mailbag was overflowing with disgruntled Syracuse football fans who may have forgot to read the fine print that sometimes you lose in sports.

Let’s get right to it. (Note: Some emails have been edited for space and brevity)

Joe Masterleo had a few points I’d like to address one-by-one.

Stanford staff out-coached and its players out-played SU on both sides of the ball, and in most departments, far more than the actual score indicates. Suggest you say so this week, and bluntly, along with Coach Brown.

Done and done, Joe. Brown said his team was “out-physicaled” by Stanford as did I on the Syracuse Football postgame show following SU’s loss to the Cardinal.

Anybody who knows anything about football, including the TV announcers, knew who the 4th and 9 pass was going to that set up the winning FG, and were totally stunned that the Stanford receiver (one of the nation’s best) was left in single coverage. Where was Elijah Robinson, and the rest of the coaches on that play? Duh? Snoozing. A time out was in order to adjust. Fran Brown needs to own up to that, and how he was taken to school by an experienced coach with far more savvy.

Syracuse did adjust in the timeout, putting Clarence Lewis on Elic Ayomanor instead of Jayden Bellamy. There’s no question Syracuse should have doubled Stanford’s best guy. No excuses there. Ayomanor made a terrific back-shoulder catch in single-coverage and the rest is history.

Big Picture Takeaways in Syracuse Football's Loss to Stanford Cardinal | Syracuse Orange Podcast (youtube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)
Syracuse Orange Football fell to Stanford Cardinal 26-24 on Friday night. Kyle McCord and the Syracuse passing game had another nice game, but LeQuint Allen and the run game couldn't get going. Fran Brown and Elijah Robinson's defense appears to be the weakest unit on the Cuse through three weeks. The coaching staff also did not have Syracuse ready after the bye and its game plan for Elic Ayomanor wasn't up to par.

Jackson Holzer gives his big picture takeaways in Syracuse's loss to Stanford on this edition of the Locked On Syracuse Podcast.

Syracuse Football's Defense MUST BE BETTER | Syracuse Orange Podcast. (youtube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse)
Syracuse Orange Football's defense has let up over 350 yards of offense in each of Syracuse's first three games of the season. The Orange failed to stop the Stanford Cardinal's run game, which was similar to their issues against the Ohio Bobcats in week one. The secondary also couldn't get a stop against Ashton Daniels and Elic Ayomanor when it mattered the most.

Jackson Holzer reacts to Syracuse's defensive performance through three weeks on Locked On Syracuse.

Syracuse Football's Strong Passing Attack BUT Poor Running Game | Syracuse Orange Podcast (youtube; podcast; Locked on Syracuse; premieres at 10 AM EST)

Syracuse Orange Football's passing attack led by Kyle McCord continues to impress. The Orange are fourth in the nation in pass yards-per-game. However, LeQuint Allen and the Syracuse rushing attack hasn't gotten off to a fast start.

Jackson Holzer dives into Syracuse's offense after its loss to Stanford on Locked On Syracuse.

MSN (msn.com; Rosvoglou)
Syracuse football coach Fran Brown was unable to pick up his third win of the season on Friday night, but he did win over a lot of fans.

During this Friday's game between Syracuse and Stanford, ESPN’s Paul Carcaterra asked Brown, "What needs to happen to win this game?" The first-year head coach's response to that question was as literal as it gets.

"We got to have one more point than them," Brown replied.

Unsurprisingly, fans loved that comment from Brown. Some believe Carcaterra set himself up by asking such a "silly" question.

Honestly, it's tough to blame either party for this in-game interview going south. Carcaterra is just doing his job and trying to get a sound bite for ESPN, and Brown obviously wants to get that interaction over with as soon as possible.

Unfortunately for the Orange, they were unable to take down the Cardinal at home. Starting quarterback Kyle McCord had an inconsistent performance, completing 27-of-42 pass attempts for 339 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Syracuse football: Orange will need to display a different kind of toughness moving forward (TNIAAM; Wall)
The Syracuse Orange lost to the Stanford Cardinal in a game they should have won after looking like they were about to win a game they had no business to win.

It’s a disappointing loss for a number of reasons- which so many have you pointed out repeatedly since Friday night. The same issues with costly penalties, inexplicable coaching decisions, and a lack of urgency playing a home game after a bye week were evident However, the notion that this 2024 is over or can no longer be “special” is something I have an issue with.

The last “special” season we’ve seen happened in 2018 and a lot of you seem to forget that the team was 4-2 and coming off back-to-back road losses when they staged a big comeback against UNC and out-lasted NC State and turned a spiraling season around.

This year’s Orange will have the same opportunity in front of them, but they are going to have to get back to the D.A.R.T. philosophy that Fran Brown preaches. Syracuse took pride in being tougher than Georgia Tech, but Stanford was the tougher team on Friday night. Brown himself acknowledged that Syracuse can’t allow themselves to stray from what they need to do to be successful.

There’s a lot to be critical of from the Orange’s performance under the bright lights. It was a huge opportunity to make a statement that “September Syracuse” might be different this year, but in many ways it reminded me too much of games in the 90s and 00s in the golden modern era.

Five Takeaways: Stanford 26 Syracuse 24 (247sports.com; McAllister)

Syracuse
suffered a stunning 26-24 loss to Stanford in the JMA Wireless Dome Friday night. Here are five takeaways from the set back.

1. Mistakes

This was a game full of errors for Syracuse. Whether it was extending Stanford drives with careless penalties, turnovers, not taking advantage of opportunities and other miscues. That, as much as anything, is what cost Syracuse the game. Syracuse forced two turnovers and only got three total points off of them. Both were in Stanford territory, including one very deep. Syracuse stalled on that drive and got only a field goal. The second interception seemed to give Syracuse the momentum back, until a pick six turned the tide. It was just a sloppy game all around from the Orange, something we had not seen in the first two games. Including the seeming absence of Oronde Gadsden, who was not targeted often and seemed to be on the sideline more than expected.

2. Offensive Line

The offensive line had easily its worst game of the young season as Stanford got pressure consistently all game. Kyle McCord was sacked four times and under duress nearly the entire game. Not to mention the inability to open up any holes to get the ground game going. Syracuse only ran for 26 yards on 17 carries for the game. The Stanford defensive line gave Syracuse fits all game and it directly led to the offensive never really getting into consistent rhythm. It was a disappointing performance considering what Stanford had been defensively coming into the game.

3. Pressure

On the flip side, Syracuse struggled to get pressure on Stanford's quarterback without blitzing. It seemed like whenever Fadil Diggs was spying Ashton Daniels, the pass rush was lacking. That led to several big plays from the Stanford offense. It has been a bit of an issue through three games overall, so Syracuse has to figure out other ways to dial up pressure if the three man front cannot get there.

4. Coverage on Fourth Down

Everyone knew Elic Ayomanor was getting the first look on Stanford's fourth and nine play that ended up being the difference in who won. Yet Syracuse still had single coverage with no safety help (at least to the outside) and only three down linemen rushed the passer. I think if Syracuse could go back they would set up the coverage differently. It put one of the best receivers in the country in an advantageous position and Daniels was able to deliver a well thrown ball without pressure. He had struggled all night when Syracuse had extra rushers. That is a tough way to lose.

5. Where to go From Here

Ultimately, Syracuse can still accomplish everything it wants. Syracuse will blow out Holy Cross and then another swing game is coming against UNLV. A win there and Syracuse is 4-1 going into the rest of the conference slate. Yes it is a set back but no it does not mean the sky is falling. There are a lot of things to work on in order for this team to take the next step but I still think this is a good football team that will have a good season. Here are some positives from the game. The defense only gave up one touchdown. Despite the struggles and mistakes, Syracuse did rally to take a lead late. Jackson Meeks continues to show the ability to make tough catches and perhaps has earned a larger role in the offense.

What We Learned From Syracuse’s Loss To Stanford (orangefizz.net; Horning)

It wasn’t pretty, especially in the first half. Syracuse fell to Stanford at the end 26-24 with a game winning field goal from Emmet Kenney 39 yards out. The bright side is we saw about as ugly as the Orange offense could get, and they still managed to hang in the ballgame and even take a lead in the fourth quarter because of the steady SU defense. However, the obvious downside is that there were too many costly mistakes for quarterback Kyle McCord and the majority of the offense.

Defense:

Let’s start where credit is due, and that is the Syracuse defense for keeping the Orange in the game. It seemed like over and over the SU defense stood strong and the offense failed to get anything going, and that process repeated quite often. Syracuse held Stanford quarterback Ashton Daniels in check, limiting him to only 178 yards through the air and one touchdown. SU also recorded two interceptions, which helped the offensive momentum. One of the few downsides to the Orange defense had to do with wide receiver Elic Ayomanor. The sophomore made seven receptions for 87 yards and an ecstatic, one-handed touchdown while staying in bounds in the first quarter. Syracuse knew going into this game that they needed extra focus on him, because he notched over 1,000 receiving yards last year. The touchdown didn’t help, but also SU had Stanford pinned on a 4th-and-9 with a chance to close out the game, before the Orange decided to go one-on-one coverage with Ayomanor and it led to a 27-yard catch and first down before Stanford won it with a field goal.

Offense:

The Syracuse offense didn’t look pretty, especially in the first half. McCord still came out of it with 158 passing yards, but SU’s run game was a problem for the entire night. The Orange recorded -13 yards on the ground in the first half, and only had 39 in the second half. SU’s offensive line didn’t help, either, with too many collapses in the opening half. Still, Syracuse only trailed by three at halftime. The offense looked better in the second half, with McCord putting the offense on his shoulders, but he threw two interceptions in crucial drives, including a pick-six.

Five takeaways from Stanford’s win at Syracuse (r1vals.com; Parker)
Friday, Stanford football defeated Syracuse on the road by a final score of 26-24 as Emmet Kenney drained the game-winning field goal. Below are five takeaways I have from the Cardinal’s historic victory as it was their first ACC game in program history.

Featured on Rivals

#1. The defense has taken a major step forward: If anyone had any questions about whether or not Stanford’s defense was better, I think Friday’s win at Syracuse should put those questions to rest. That’s not to say Stanford’s defense doesn’t still have areas to improve on. They gave up a 67 yard touchdown and also a 17 yard touchdown run, so there are some issues that they need to address. But on the whole, they are much better on defense than last year. They had two interceptions, one of which was a pick-six by Mitch Leigber and then also when faced with short field position after Ashton Daniels threw an interception, they were able to hold Syracuse to a field goal. Not to mention the fact that they were putting decent pressure on the quarterback all night long.

For the first time in a while, one can actually say the Stanford defense is more reliable than the Stanford offense. The past couple of seasons it has been the opposite. Suffice to say, the Stanford defense is definitely better than last year. Everyone is much more in sync and then the addition of safety Jay Green and defensive lineman Clay Patterson from the transfer portal is huge as well.

#2. Chris Davis Jr. and Micah Ford are gonna be a good: Freshmen running backs Chris Davis Jr. and Micah Ford both had strong outings: Davis rushing for 79 yards on nine attempts with a long of 47 yards; Ford rushing for 47 yards on eight attempts with a long of 10 yards. Ford actually had a touchdown reception called back due to a holding penalty, which was a bummer. That would have been a great play. The fact that Stanford has two really good true freshmen running backs is exciting and then true freshman Cole Tabb, who is injured, is one who they have high hopes for as well. So, lots to be excited about with the running backs.

#3. Get the ball to Elic Ayomanor and good things happen: Redshirt sophomore wide receiver Elic Ayomanor had a huge one-handed touchdown and then also a clutch reception on 4th and 9 that saved their game-winning drive. He continues to show why he’s so special. This game was just another reminder that if you get the ball into Ayomanor’s hands, good things will happen. He’s legit.

#4. Troy Taylor knows how to inspire his players: One thing that came through Friday night is the belief that head coach Troy Taylor has instilled in his players. They fought all the way until the end and didn’t give up even after Syracuse took the lead late in the game. It’s not just the fact that Stanford won at Syracuse that’s impressive. It’s the way they won it. They didn’t have the game won until the clock hit zero, but that didn’t stop them from believing.

#5. Emmet Kenney is an NFL prospect: Back in the spring, punter Aidan Flintoft told me he thought Emmet Kenney had a chance to be as good of a kicker as Josh Karty. I thought that was just a teammate backing his guy, but after the way Kenney performed on Friday night going 4-4 on his field goals with a long of 51 yards including the game-winner from 39 yards out, I think we can start talking about Kenney as an NFL prospect. So far, there’s been no drop off from Karty to Kenney, which is really amazing to say since Karty is a phenomenal kicker.

ACC Football Review: Embarrassment at North Carolina, Fun at Pitt (SI; Curtis)

The impact of a helmet microphone, an embarrassing loss, a historic start, a quarterback’s resurrected image and an inexplicable TD void were part of the weekend’s ACC football action.

Utter embarrassment

Let’s count the ways James Madison’s 70-50 victory over North Carolina was embarrassing to the Tar Heels:
---North Carolina was a 12.5-point favorite

---The 70 points tied the most points UNC had ever allowed in a football game, matching the 70-41 loss to East Carolina in 2014.

---North Carolina reportedly paid James Madison $500,000 to come play the game in Chapel Hill.

---UNC coach Mack Brown afterward: “Embarrassing day. Shocking day. You shouldn’t be at North Carolina and lose to a Group of Five team. Period. . . . People that want to blame me, they should. I’m at fault 100 percent.”

---James Madison scored 53 points in the first half, the most points ever scored in a half against the Tar Heels and more points than the UNC basketball team allowed in any first half last season.

---Official attendance was 50,500, but most fans left at halftime, and the stadium was almost empty by the time the game ended. Here is the halftime exodus:

The lighter side of a 70-point game

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh was luxuriating in its 73-17 victory over Youngstown State for several reasons:

---It was the most points scored by Pitt in three years.

---Pitt is 4-0 for the first time in 24 years and completed its nonconference schedule undefeated for the first time in program history.

---Pitt quarterback Eli Holstein became the first Panthers quarterback to throw at least three touchdown passes in each of the first four games of a season since Rod Rutherford did it in 2003 (with the help of Larry Fitzgerald as his prime receiver).

Impact of the helmet microphone

Trailing by point and facing a fourth-and-9 play from the Syracuse 45-yard line with 37 seconds left, Stanford coach Troy Taylor sent his team out for the decisive play following a timeout. But when the teams lined up Taylor saw that Syracuse had single coverage on Cardinal receiver Elic Ayomanor. Taylor still had time before the audio to quarterback Ashton Daniels’ helmet microphone was shut off, so he told Daniels, “Hey, you got to go to Elic.” It resulted in a 27-yard completion to Ayomanor, which led to a game-winning field goal on the final play of the Cardinal's 26-24 victory.

A more memorable Ayomanor catch came earlier in the game and resulted in Stanford’s first touchdown.

Now what do you have to say about me?

Pessimists said Clemson was doomed with Cade Klubnik as its quarterback after he passed for just 142 yards, threw an interception and was sacked twice in the season-opening 34-3 loss to Georgia.

In the two games since then, he has completed 80% of his passes (40-for-50) for 587 yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions. And in Saturday’s 59-35 victory over North Carolina State he added 70 rushing yards, including a 55-yard touchdown run.

He played only 2 ½ quarters against the Wolfpack, leaving with the Tigers holding a 52-14 lead. He led Clemson to touchdowns on seven of the nine possessions in which he was in the game.

How do you gain 410 yards and not score a touchdown?

---Cal outgained Florida State by 126 yards (410-284), and Cal outgained FSU 222-76 in the second half.

---Cal had 23 first downs to 17 for FSU, and the Bears had a 14-5 advantage in first downs in the second half.

---Cal averaged 5.5 yards per play; Florida State averaged 4.2 yards, and both teams committed one turnover.

Yet Cal lost its first ACC game 14-9, failing to score a single touchdown.

How could that happen? Red zone inefficiency.

Cal got inside the Florida State 15-yard line on five different occasions, and came away with just six points on those five possessions combined. Missed field goals of 36 and 38 yards played a part.

You could claim that it was the ability of Florida State's defense to stiffen when it mattered most.

It added up to Florida State’s first win of the season and Cal’s first loss.

Final notes

---Virginia, which finished 13th of 14 ACC teams in rushing last year, rushed for 384 yards in Saturday’s 43-24 road win over Coastal Carolina. It was the Cavaliers’ highest rushing total in 26 years.

https://www.si.com/college/georgiatech/football/acc-football-power-rankings-week-five-01j8cmf2cc5w (SI; Caudell)

After another week of ACC play, we have a similar story as the first few weeks of the season. Miami and Clemson continue to look dominant, while the rest of the conference is in flux. Louisville survived a test vs Georgia Tech, Syracuse was upset by Stanford, Boston College had a comeback win vs Michigan State, and Florida State finally got a win when they defeated Cal.

So how do the ACC Power Rankings look after a crazy week four?

17. Wake Forest (1-2, 0-1). Last week: 16

Wake Forest was off this week, but move down to the last spot due to FSU winning. Wake faces Louisiana this weekend.

16. NC State (2-2, 0-1). Last week: 15

It continues to be a rough season for NC State. The Wolfpack quickly found themselves down 28-0 vs the Tigers and it was 45-7 at the half in a game that was not competitive. They were able to score a little bit in the second half, but it was an ugly day all around for NC State. They face Northern Illinois next Saturday.

15. Florida State (1-3, 1-2): Last week 17

It was not pretty by any means, but FSU got their first win of the year. The defense shut down Cal's offense and only let them score nine points, but the Seminoles offense still looks dreadful. Can they string some wins together and beat SMU on Saturday?

14. Virginia Tech (2-2, 0-0). Last week: 11

Like NC State, Virginia Tech has been a very disappointing team and that continued on Saturday when they lost to Rutgers at home. Bhayshul Tuten had a strong game on the ground, but the Hokies passing game remains a weakness and the defense gave up nearly 300 yards to Rutgers, a team that struggles to throw the ball. It is only going to get harder for Virginia Tech, as they have their ACC opener on Friday night vs Miami.

13. North Carolina (3-1, 0-0). Last week: 7

When you give up over 50 points in the first half to James Madison and then proceed to give up 70 in the game, you drop six spots. It was a horrible performance by North Carolina and their defense, something they had hoped was fixed coming into the year. Can the Tar Heels get things turned around quickly when they face Duke on Saturday?

12. Virginia (3-1, 1-0). Last week: 12

Tip your hat to Virginia, they bounced back from their loss to Maryland by beating Coastal Carolina on the road and getting their third win of the season. The Cavaliers are off next weekend.

11. Stanford (2-1, 1-0). Last week: 14

The Cardinal got their first ACC win in their first ever ACC game when they kicked a last second field goal to beat Syracuse on the road. Stanford has to go on the road next week to face Clemson, so big challenges remain for the Cardinal.

10. Georgia Tech (3-2, 1-2). Last week: 9

The Yellow Jackets had their chances on the road vs Louisville, but they made too many critical mistakes in the loss to the Cardinals. A backwards pass returned for a touchdown, a blocked field goal returned for a touchdown, a missed field goal, and multiple failed 4th down conversions kept Brent Key from getting another ranked ACC win. The Yellow Jackets are off next week.

9. SMU (3-1, 0-0). Last week: 13

SMU got a blowout win vs TCU on Saturday in what was arguably their best performance of the season. The Mustangs play their first ever game in the ACC on Saturday night when they host Florida State.

8. Syracuse (2-1, 1-1). Last week: 5

The Orange came back down to earth after a loss to Stanford, a game in which their passing attack did not look as sharp as it did to start the season. Kyle McCord turned the ball over and Syracuse could not run the ball for most of the game. The Orange should get back on track Saturday when the play Holy Cross.

https://www.syracuse.com/orangefoot...e-football-tumble-after-loss-to-stanford.html (PS; $; Carlson)

Syracuse football coach Fran Brown’s honeymoon lasted just over nine months.

After building excitement through the offseason and the first two games of the Syracuse season, the Orange hit its first patch of turbulence on Friday against Stanford.

Familiar issues resurfaced in the 26-24 loss. Injuries took a toll on the Syracuse defense. A shaky offensive line was a problem. Late-game decisions and execution deserve to be looked at under a microscope.

That doesn’t mean history is going to repeat itself, but it does end any argument that the Orange is currently among the top teams in the conference.

Last week, more than 45 percent of you voted Syracuse as the No. 2 team in the ACC. This week, the only question is how far the Orange deserves to fall.

Here’s how I’d rank the ACC this week.

1. Miami

Record: 4-0 (2-0)
Last week’s ranking: 1
Last week’s result: Win 50-15 at South Florida
This week’s schedule: Friday vs. Virginia Tech, 7:30 p.m. ESPN

Why No. 1? Through four games Cam Ward is averaging 359.8 passing yards and 3.5 touchdowns per outing. His team is winning by an average margin of 42 points per game. The Hurricanes have been dominant and completed their non-conference schedule unbeaten.

2. Clemson

Record: 2-1 (1-0)
Last week’s ranking: 5
Last week’s result: Win 59-35 vs. NC State
This week’s schedule: Saturday vs. Stanford, 7 p.m., ESPN

Why No. 2? In games against teams that aren’t Georgia, Clemson has outscored its opponents (125-55). The offense seems to be fine as long as the opponent isn’t elite. The ACC doesn’t have many teams that are.

3. Louisville

Record: 3-0 (1-0)
Last week’s ranking: 2
Last week’s result: Win 31-19 vs. Georgia Tech
This week’s schedule: Saturday at Notre Dame, 3:30 p.m., Peacock

Why No. 3? Louisville wasn’t dominant but it did pass its first real test of the season by scoring on offense, defense and special teams against Georgia Tech. It’s game against Notre Dame this week would be big for the conference’s hopes of getting two teams in the College Football Playoffs.

4. Boston College

Record: 3-1 (1-0)
Last week’s ranking: 3
Last week’s result: Win 23-19 vs. Michigan State

This week’s schedule: Saturday vs. Western Kentucky, Noon, ACC Network

Why No. 4? Boston College’s annual “Red Bandana” game, played in honor of former football player and Sept. 11 hero Welles Crowther, is always an emotional one. The Eagles delivered, scoring the game-winning touchdown with less than 2 minutes remaining.

Boston College has played three Power-Four teams and looked capable each time out.

5. Pittsburgh

Record: 4-0 (0-0)
Last week’s ranking: 6
Last week’s result: Win 73-17 vs. Youngstown State
This week’s schedule: Off

Why No. 5? Pittsburgh spent all offseason listening to doubts about its offense. It seemed to take those frustrations out against an overmatched FCS foe, piling up 644 yards of offense.

6. Southern Methodist

Record: 3-1 (0-0)
Last week’s ranking: 14
Last week’s result: Win 66-42 vs Texas Christian
This week’s schedule: Saturday vs. Florida State, 8 p.m., ACC Network

Why No. 6? It’s a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately-world in the middle of the ACC and the Mustangs were the only team that looked particularly good last week against a Power-Four opponent. SMU beat a Big XII rival soundly by scoring in all three phases.

In addition to the win, Southern Methodist’s close loss to Brigham Young looks much better in hindsight with the Cougars currently unbeaten and coming off a 38-9 obliteration of Kansas State.

7. Duke

Record: 4-0 (0-0)
Last week’s ranking: 9
Last week’s result: Win 45-17 at Middle Tennessee
This week’s schedule: Saturday vs. North Carolina, 4 p.m., ESPN2

Why No. 6? The Blue Devils remained unbeaten by pounding Middle Tennessee. I still don’t believe in them. My eyes tell me they are a paper tiger.

8. Stanford

Record: 2-1 (1-0)
Last week’s ranking: 15
Last week’s result: Win 26-24 vs. Syracuse
This week’s schedule: Saturday at Clemson, 7 p.m., ESPN

Why No. 8? I don’t think Stanford could do any better than a split with Syracuse if the teams played 10 games. I’d probably pick the Orange in a rematch. But a head-to-head victory has to count for something this early in the season, especially if the road team wins.

9. Syracuse

Record: 2-1 (1-1)
Last week’s ranking: 4
Last week’s result: Loss 26-24 vs. Stanford
This week’s schedule: Saturday vs. Holy Cross, Noon, ACC Network Extra

Why No. 9? Kyle McCord is one of two quarterbacks in the ACC to throw for 300 yards in every game along with Ward, who is a Heisman candidate. When in doubt bet on good quarterbacks.

If it still felt surreal that the ACC’s membership includes Cal and Stanford, rival schools that are each about 3,000 miles away of their new conference’s namesake Atlantic Coast, Week 4 of the college football season gave fans their first dose of that new reality.
The Cardinal and Golden Bears both had their ACC debuts in Week 4, with Stanford going on the road and surprisingly knocking off undefeated Syracuse. Cal also fell just shy of a road victory against previously winless Florida State, which put a temporary halt to the Seminoles’ nightmarish first month of the season.
Beyond that, several teams continued unbeaten starts and others showed cracks that have become impossible to ignore.

Here’s how the ACC’s 17 teams stack up after Week 4:

1. Miami (4-0)

  • Last week: 1
  • This week: vs. Virginia Tech
Cam Ward and the Hurricanes remain the class of the conference after racing past South Florida 50-15. After leading the Bulls by just a touchdown at halftime, Miami outscored them 28-0 in the second half and outgained them by a 338-143 margin.

2. Clemson (2-1, 1-0 ACC)

  • Last week: 2
  • This week: vs. Stanford
Dabo Swinney’s Tigers continued what has been a dominant run since a humbling season-opening loss to Georgia. Clemson thumped NC State 59-35 in its ACC opener, a game it led by 45 in the middle of the third quarter before taking its foot off the gas. The Tigers have outscored their past two opponents by a 125-55 margin.

3. Louisville (3-0, 1-0)

  • Last week: 3
  • This week: at No. 14 Notre Dame
The Cardinals’ 2-0 start came with the caveat that they had gotten there by beating up on FCS and languishing Group of Five opponents. That qualifier is no longer necessary after a 31-19 win against Georgia Tech, a game in which Jeff Brohm’s defense and special teams each accounted for a touchdown.

4. Boston College (3-1, 1-0)

  • Last week: 5
  • This week: vs. Western Kentucky
Thomas Castellanos worked his magic in a pivotal moment, throwing a game-winning 42-yard touchdown to Lewis Bond with 88 seconds remaining to give the Eagles a 23-19 win over an improved Michigan State team in the annual Red Bandanna Game. Boston College now has two Power Four wins.

5. Pitt (4-0)

  • Last week: 7
  • This week: BYE
The Panthers averaged 48.5 points per game in their four non-conference contests, with transfer quarterback Eli Holstein throwing for 1,183 yards, 12 touchdowns and two interceptions. With one weekend still remaining in September, coach Pat Narduzzi’s team has already surpassed its win total from last season.

6. Syracuse (2-1, 1-1)

  • Last week: 4
  • This week: vs. Holy Cross
The Orange’s 2-0 start under new coach Fran Brown raised many eyebrows across the ACC, but its 26-24 home loss to Stanford last Friday showed there’s still work to do. Syracuse was gashed on the ground by the Cardinal’s Chris Davis Jr. and Micah Ford, who combined for 126 yards on just 17 carries.

7. Georgia Tech (3-2, 1-2)

  • Last week: 6
  • This week: BYE
For the first time under coach Brent Key, the Yellow Jackets lost to a ranked ACC opponent, falling 31-19 at No. 17 Louisville in a game in which they actually outgained the Cardinals 410-326. They were undone by a couple of plays, though, with a Haynes King failed backwards pass and a blocked field goal attempt both getting returned for touchdowns.

8. Duke (4-0)

  • Last week: 11
  • This week: vs. North Carolina
After scoring exactly 26 points in each of their first three games, the Blue Devils exploded for 45 points in a 28-point win at Middle Tennessee State. A win next week would not only exponentially increase rival North Carolina’s already mounting misery, but also would result in Duke’s first 5-0 start since 1994.

9. SMU (3-1)

  • Last week: 13
  • This week: vs. Florida State
The Mustangs looked about as impressive as they possibly could have in their first game with quarterback Kevin Jennings as the team’s solidified starter, blowing out former coach Sonny Dykes and rival TCU behind touchdowns off an interception, a recovered fumble and a punt return. Their ACC debut against Florida State awaits next week.

10. Stanford (2-1, 1-0)

  • Last week: 14
  • This week: at No. 15 Clemson
Between its 3-9 record last season and an early-season home loss to TCU, it was easy to write the Cardinal off in broader evaluations of the ACC. That’s not the case anymore. An 11-play, 54-yard drive that included a successful fourth-and-9 conversion set up a game-winning 39-yard field goal from Emmet Kenney to give Stanford a win over Syracuse in its first-ever ACC game.

11. Cal (3-1, 0-1)

  • Last week: 10
  • This week: BYE
The Golden Bears had no shortage of opportunities to push Florida State to a previously unimaginable 0-4 start, but despite outgaining the Seminoles by a 410-284 margin, Cal was undone by its own mistakes, namely 10 penalties. Because of that, social media’s new favorite team was unable to turn Doak Campbell Stadium into Woke Campbell Stadium.

12. Virginia (3-1, 1-0)

  • Last week: 15
  • This week: BYE
Though they entered the season with relatively low expectations, the Cavaliers have put together a solid resume that’s now highlighted by a 43-24 road win against a previously undefeated Coastal Carolina team. Xavier Brown was the catalyst of the victory, running for 171 yards on just nine carries.

13. North Carolina (3-1)

  • Last week: 9
  • This week: at Duke
Porous defenses have been a staple of Mack Brown’s second stint with the Tar Heels, but even when measured against that low bar, last Saturday’s 70-50 loss to James Madison was particularly unsightly. In a performance that prompted Brown to refute chatter he was stepping down as coach, North Carolina tied the most points it had ever allowed in a game, a total that included an astonishing 53 points surrendered in the first half.

14. NC State (2-2, 0-1)

  • Last week: 8
  • This week: vs. Northern Illinois
One third of the way through the regular season, the Wolfpack has two wins — against an FCS opponent and a 1-2 Conference USA team — and two losses to Power Four opponents that have been decided by a combined 65 points. Last Saturday’s 59-35 loss at Clemson wasn’t even that close, with Dave Doeren’s team trailing 59-14 at the end of the third quarter.

15. Virginia Tech (2-2)

  • Last week: 12
  • This week: at No. 9 Miami
There’s nothing shameful about losing to a hard-nosed Rutgers team, but the Hokies’ 26-23 loss at Lane Stadium was marred by three turnovers, the last of which, a Kyron Drones interception, effectively ended the game. Virginia Tech is now 0-2 against Power Four opponents, with a game against Miami next.

16. Florida State (1-3, 1-2)

  • Last week: 16
  • This week: at SMU
A win is a win, especially when it’s the first one of the season. The Seminoles were still gripped by some of the same problems that plagued them in their first three losses — especially offensively, with Florida State putting up just 284 yards — but pulling out a 14-9 win against Cal helped them avoid an even more disastrous start to the season.

17. Wake Forest (1-2, 0-1)

  • Last week: 17
  • This week: vs. Louisiana
The Demon Deacons were the lone ACC team on a bye last week. They’ll look to get their second win of the season Saturday against a Louisiana team that only lost to Tulane by eight.

Juice Jam is a highlight of the fall semester, and this year was no different. Though this year’s concert looked a little different, the crowd was hyped to see some of their favorite artists, with expectations through the JMA Wireless Dome’s roof.

“I’m hoping (Quavo) brings out Lana Del Rey tonight for ‘Tough,’” freshman Kyle McMahan said. “That’s my favorite Quavo song.”

This year, University Union’s Juice Jam featured headliner Quavo with Maisie Peters and Smino as opening acts in the Dome. The rapper was announced to headline the concert after PARTYNEXTDOOR and his subsequent replacement Lil Tecca both dropped out for personal reasons.

The controversy surrounding the headlining acts may have limited crowd presence, some concertgoers said, but others felt Quavo was a satisfying headlining act.

“I think we got an upgrade,” junior Ameer Senor said. “No disrespect.”

Senor, who also liked the previous pick of PARTYNEXTDOOR as headliner, was enthusiastic about Juice Jam’s venue change. For him, Juice Jam inside the Dome was better than sitting in the heat at Skytop. In addition to the location, Juice Jam also changed to be open to the public this year.

Freshman Isaiah Moses said he wasn’t that disappointed about the headliner changes, as he was more familiar with Quavo than PARTYNEXTDOOR.

Jocelyn Guzman, a freshman who bought tickets for PARTYNEXTDOOR, figured she would still go for Quavo’s set, though she was more familiar with songs he’s featured on with Drake, Migos and Young Thug than his solo work. Others, like freshman Yasmina Gall, preferred Quavo as headliner over the other options.
