Welcome to Back to the Future Day!

Back to the Future Part II, released in 1989, starts out set in 1985 where the previous film in the series left off. Marty McFly, played by Michael J. Fox, along with Doc Brown, played by Christopher Lloyd, and Jennifer Parker, played by Elisabeth Shue, travel to the future in Doc's DeLorean to save Marty and Jennifer's future children. The date they travel to is October 21, 2015, the date which would become the first "Back to the Future" Day. In the years leading up to the day, photoshopped images appeared online that claimed the day of the DeLorean's twenty-first-century time travel had arrived. But true fans of the film series knew they had to wait until 2015.

ACC Football power rankings: Syracuse-Pitt is likely biggest league game so far this season (PS; $; Carlson)

One of the biggest games of the ACC football season so far will take place this week and the Orange will be part of it.

The nationally-televised Thursday night matchup between Syracuse and Pittsburgh is just the second matchup between teams ranked among my top five (at the time) this season. The first was Southern Methodist’s win over Louisville on Oct. 5.

There have, of course, been bigger non-conference games led by Clemson-Georgia to open the year.

But this Thursday’s game will play a key role in shaping the ACC championship game picture and determining which games will be important the rest of the year.

If Syracuse wins the Orange will have a second straight spicy matchup as Virginia Tech visits next week. The Hokies came into the season with lofty aspirations and have finally started to play like the team most expected.

If Pittsburgh wins, the Panthers will face Southern Methodist next week in a meeting of teams that are unbeaten in the league.

Here’s how I’d rank the top of the ACC this week.

1. Clemson

Record: 6-1 (5-0)
Last week’s ranking: 1
Last week’s result: Win 48-31 vs. Virginia

This week’s schedule: Off

Why No. 1? Do you like the resume test or the eye test? Clemson has won six straight and none have been closer than 16 points. This one wasn’t even as competitive as the score made it look. The Tigers led 38-10 entering the fourth quarter. Virginia is also the best team Clemson has beat all year.

2. Miami

Record: 7-0 (3-0)
Last week’s ranking: 2
Last week’s result: Win 52-45 at Louisville
This week’s schedule: Saturday vs. Florida State, 7 p.m., ESPN

Why No. 2? Miami has won seven straight games. The last three have been by one possession. But Virginia Tech and Louisville are better than anyone Clemson has beaten.

3. Southern Methodist

Record: 6-1 (3-0)
Last week’s ranking: 3
Last week’s result: Win 40-10 at Stanford

This week’s schedule: Saturday at Duke, 8 p.m., ACC Network

Why No. 3? The Mustangs have only lost to an unbeaten team (BYU) and remain poised to take advantage of an exceptionally friendly conference schedule. An eventual game against Pitt is the toughest remaining game on the SMU calendar and, as it stands, is the only regular-season game it would play all year against one of this week’s top five teams.

4. Pittsburgh

Record: 6-0 (2-0)
Last week’s ranking: 4
Last week’s result: Off

This week’s schedule: Thursday vs. Syracuse, 7:30 p.m., ESPN

Why No. 4? Panthers running back Des Reid will be a unique challenge this week for a Syracuse defense that has struggled to tackle. On a per game basis, he is a top-10 rusher and receiver in the ACC, averaging 98.8 yards per game on the ground and another 68.2 in the air.

5. Syracuse

Record: 5-1 (2-1)
Last week’s ranking: 5
Last week’s result: Off

This week’s schedule: Thursday at Pittsburgh, 7:30 p.m., ESPN

Why No. 5? Syracuse has one of the three best quarterbacks in the ACC right now and could get one of its best defensive players -- linebacker Marlowe Wax -- back this week. The Orange did an excellent job treading water without him.

6. Louisville

Record: 4-3 (2-2)
Last week’s ranking: 6
Last week’s result: Loss 52-45 vs. Miami

This week’s schedule: Friday at Boston College, 7:30 p.m., ESPN2

Why No. 6? All of Louisville’s losses have come against teams currently ranked in the AP Top 25. The Cardinals still have Clemson and Pittsburgh remaining. They’ve actually done fairly well considering the schedule.

Axe: Thursday is the biggest Syracuse-Pitt football game since when? Does it matter? It’s big (PS; $; Axe)
The stakes in the moment are big enough for Syracuse football’s Thursday night matchup against No. 19 Pittsburgh at Acrisure Stadium, but a little historic perspective can’t hurt.

This is the first time Pitt has started a season 6-0 since 1982, when Dan Marino was under center and getting Heisman votes.

Syracuse has not won a game off the banks of the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers since 2001. The Orange has as good of a chance to end that streak as any this year and is coming off back-to-back road wins for the first time since 2012.

It’s rare that SU plays three-straight games on the road, but the last time it won three consecutive away from the dome was in 1996.

The Orange has already knocked off two ranked opponents (Georgia Tech, UNLV) this season, but this one would hit different if a third ranked win (which could be the first time SU pulls off that feat since 1998) comes against the rival Panthers.

Syracuse and Pitt have put in time over the years with Thursday’s game being the 80th all-time matchup.

Despite all the history you have to swipe away from your face when discussing the SU-Pitt series, these are not your typical Panthers.

Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi on facing Kyle McCord this week: ‘I’m going to call up Ryan Day and yell at him’ (PS; $; Carlson)
Pittsburgh football coach Pat Narduzzi was effusive in his praise of Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord last Friday when meeting with Pitt reporters to discuss this week’s showdown with Syracuse.

Narduzzi was complimentary of the work Fran Brown has done in his first season, the ability of Fadil Diggs to move all over the field on defense and the presence of tight end Oronde Gadsden II. However, he saved his most glowing -- and amusing words -- for discussing McCord.

On an appearance on College Sports Today in Sirius XM Radio, Narduzzi had some fun with the circumstances that landed McCord at Syracuse, as well as Brown’s one-liner that he ought to send Ohio State coach Ryan Day champagne as a thank-you.

“Kyle McCord, that guy is special. I’m not sure what happened at Ohio State but I wish he’d go back to Ohio State,” Narduzzi quipped. “I think Fran Brown had a press conference, after the first or second win where he thanked Ryan Day for them getting Kyle McCord. I’m going to call up Ryan Day and yell at him or something. They got a great one.”

ACC News

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/58...ege-football-playoff-bubble-watch-big-12-acc/ (nytimes.com; $; Ubben)

In February, reports surfaced that the Big Ten and SEC were pushing for three — possibly four — guaranteed spots in an expanded College Football Playoff. In public, the conferences were mostly mum on their Playoff preferences after their summit earlier this month in Nashville.

What the future looks like is still in flux, but the duo would love to eliminate debate over whether a one- or two-loss team from the Big 12 or ACC would be more well-regarded by the selection committee than a two- or three-loss team from the Big Ten or the SEC. There’s a chance the Big 12 or ACC might be given two automatic bids in a Playoff that expands to 14 or 16 teams, but the two richest leagues hold all the power to make the rules after the nine conference commissioners and Notre Dame signed a new Playoff deal with ESPN in March.

“We just saw five of the top 11 lose conference road games (in one weekend) — three in the SEC, two in the Big Ten,” Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti said from Nashville. “That tells you the quality and depth that’s being played. And I think that’s just a very challenging thing to evaluate.”

Further tilting the odds in favor of the two leagues that already own every growing advantage in resources and access to talent is particularly distasteful, but it’s born out of a concern that not everyone in the room shares their belief in the strength of their schedules.

By Bubble Watch’s estimation, those fears are unfounded. Big 12 and ACC teams seeking at-large bids are going to have to leave no doubt, because the committee is not going to give those two leagues the benefit of it.

In this new era of the super conference, even as the sizes of each of the Power 4 have grown, there are only two leagues wearing the “S” on their chest, and they aren’t the Big 12 and ACC.

For those two, the good news this season is their teams at the top are eliminating any debate by racking up wins, even if some might scoff at the quality of the competition. They’re not giving the committee any other choice but to include them.

If the season ended today, the field would be at least a third of teams from the Big 12 and ACC.

Miami, BYU and Iowa State have yet to lose, in part because of late-game dramatics in recent weeks to keep their records spotless. And Clemson, since a lopsided loss to Georgia in which it didn’t score a touchdown, has averaged 48.5 points a game and won six games by an average of 27.3 points, looking more each week like a team itching to rejoin the sport’s top echelon.

As the Big Ten and SEC have learned this year, upsets happen. They haven’t struck the Big 12 or ACC’s title contenders, though there’s still plenty of time.

The Big 12 and ACC might want to squeeze as many teams into the field as possible before those spots start to magically disappear.

Each week, Bubble Watch will examine who’s in, who’s out and who’s somewhere in the middle leading up to the first 12-team College Football Playoff. It’s a realistic snapshot of the field, not a projection. The five highest-ranked conference champions will get an automatic Playoff berth. Find Austin Mock’s model’s bracket projections here.

After escaping with wins against Virginia Tech and Cal, Miami did it again Saturday with a wild 52-45 victory over Louisville. Can the Hurricanes keep it going? Ahead they still have Florida State (1-6), Duke (6-1), Georgia Tech (5-3), Wake Forest (3-4) and Syracuse (5-1).

SMU has been one of the nation’s most improved teams from the start of the season, and Pitt is still the nation’s quietest undefeated Power 4 team.

Virginia Tech might feel far-fetched at 4-3 but at 2-1 in league play is only a game behind Clemson and Miami in the loss column. The Hokies have to keep winning, but their road to the ACC Championship Game is wider than it appears. Duke, after beating Florida State for the first time in school history, didn’t even bother to storm the field. What a season.

Behold, Florida State football: the gift that keeps on giving.

The joke that never, ever stops being funny. The Aesop fable that has come to life, and delivered moral lesson after moral lesson. If only Maryland were still in the ACC, so that the Seminoles could lose to the Terrapins, too, and deliver the college football version of the Tortoise and the Hare.

You know the story: The cocky, arrogant hare who ridicules the slow-moving tortoise, accepts a challenge for a race and then falls asleep, allowing his supposedly inferior opponent to win. Sound familiar, Seminoles? It should.

FSU suffered its latest indignity Friday during a 23-16 loss at Duke and, to quote N&O columnist Luke DeCock: “Hahahahahahaha.” Indeed, we are laughing. The school attempting to sue its way out of the ACC under the guise that it’s too good and too valuable for such a lowly conference is now 1-6.

The school whose fans believe to be some kind of college football royalty (and the Seminoles were, at one point, but are no more), just lost to one of those other ACC schools FSU supporters love to put down: one that supposedly doesn’t care about football; that doesn’t “invest” (whatever that means, given that every school invests in football these days) and doesn’t “get it.”

Indeed, that’s always been the subtext of Florida State’s problem with the ACC: That the conference just doesn’t understand the importance of football (as if it’s some sort of regal and noble pursuit that requires higher understanding). That its schools just don’t treat it with as much reverence. That the high and mighty Seminoles just don’t belong in a league alongside such lowly company, especially that which (according to FSU) doesn’t worship at football’s altar.

And you know what: It is true. Fans of most ACC schools haven’t been brain-rotted by a singular focus on one particular athletics endeavor. That’s a good thing, by the way.

Having varied interests and passions is a positive. FSU supporters would be wise to diversify their interests, too, given that over the past eight seasons (including this one) the Seminoles are now 30-32 in the ACC.

And that includes the 8-0 conference record of a season ago.

The deserved derision and mock-worthiness of this debacle of a season continues to be endlessly entertaining. It also continues to deliver valuable lessons. For one, FSU continues to prove just how nonsensical some of its arguments are. Pretty much all of its legal arguments are nonsensical, by the way, but we’re only talking here about the ones suggesting FSU doesn’t have enough money.

That it just has to leave the ACC, for fear of falling behind. Well, so much for that given the reality that the Seminoles continue to lose despite considerable financial advantages over competition it deems “less than.” FSU just lost to Duke, a school FSU fans would have you believe has practically never heard of football. Two weeks ago, FSU lost against SMU — which isn’t even taking a cut of ACC revenue because it wanted that badly to be a part of the conference.

So there’s that: Five of Florida State’s six defeats are proof that, no, you don’t necessarily need the most money or resources to compete. Just ask most of the schools that have defeated the Seminoles.

But also, too, FSU’s plight is another instance of “be careful what you wish for.” It has so desperately wanted to take on the role of the victim; to characterize itself as some persecuted sufferer of ACC tyranny. But really, the reason why everyone has taken so much joy in watching the Seminoles lose is because it’s a lot like seeing the schoolyard bully finally getting what he deserves.

Boston College vs. Virginia Tech Full Game Replay | 2024 ACC Football (youtube; video; ACC DN)

The Virginia Tech Hokies jumped out to a 28-0 lead and held off a hard-charging Boston College Eagles team, 42-21. Running back Bhayshul Tuten was unreal and broke the Hokies' all-time single-game rushing record, carrying the ball 18 times for 266 yards on the ground including an 83-yard touchdown run and a 61-yard TD scamper to go along with a 20-yard touchdown catch and another short scoring run. Kyron Drones was spectacular to start the game and finished completing 14-18 passes for 164 yards and a passing TD while rushing 10 times for 40 yards and 2 scores on the ground in the win as well. The Eagles rallied back behind a big 3rd quarter, scoring 21 unanswered points. Thomas Castellanos completed 17-26 passes for 205 total yards and 2 passing scores in the loss.

From ESPN: Pitt hires Tennessee's Allen Greene as athletic director

Pittsburgh has hired veteran athletic director Allen Greene as the school's next AD, the university announced Friday.
Greene has been the senior deputy athletic director and chief operating officer at Tennessee, and he has served as the athletic director at Buffalo and Auburn. He twice worked at Ole Miss and worked for seven years at Notre Dame.
He will start in his new role Nov. 1 and is taking over for Heather Lyke, who was fired last month...

Seems pretty solid.

From Tigernet: Clemson BOT votes to mandate an athletic fee on students

The Clemson Board of Trustees Finances and Facilities Committee approved an action item Friday that would charge all students a $150 athletic fee per semester. Currently, Clemson is the only public college in the state that does not require its students to pay athletic fees... Clemson's archrival, the University of South Carolina, charges its students an athletic fee of roughly $150... the fees will not go to NIL...

Bowl Tracker 2024 Week 9

The ACC now has FIVE bowl-eligible teams: Miami, Pitt, Clemson, Notre Dame*, SMU, and Duke. Two other teams need just one more win, and five more need just two wins. Here's my summary:

Georgia Tech at Virginia Tech might be more important for the Hokies than the Yellow Jackets in terms of bowl-eligibility. The Jackets need one more win, and still have NC State; VT currently needs two more wins, and after GT they must go to Syracuse (a place where the Hokies have struggled), home for Clemson, and at Duke before finishing against UVa. If the Hokies don't win Saturday, I'm not sure where that second win is coming from.
As for Syracuse, they just need one more victory, and besides VT at home, the Orange also have a home game coming up against UConn.

https://www.si.com/college/cal/foot...ference-s-homefield-disadvantage-01jap08pzg8m (SI; Curtis)

Home field advantage? Not in the ACC. Not so far anyway.

Home teams have a losing record in ACC contests, with the road team owning a 16-14 record in conference games. In Saturday’s eight games involving ACC teams, five were won by the road team, and the road team had a 3-3 record in conference games that day. Four of the six road teams covered the spread, and North Carolina State, which was a 9.5-point underdog against Cal, beat the Bears in Berkeley.

How do you explain it? We can’t but with Boston College hosting Louisville, Wake Forest playing at Stanford and SMU traveling to Duke this week, the home-field disadvantage might continue.

The One Play That Changed the Game

Of course a single play never decides a game, but in each of the eight games involving ACC teams this weekend, one play seemed to provide the telling moment.

4:26 fourth quarter -- Virginia Tech vs. Boston College

Virginia Tech led 28-0 at halftime, but Boston College had roared back with 21 straight points and had a ton of momentum when it faced a fourth-and-a-foot situation at the Eagles’ 49-yard line with 4:26 left in the fourth quarter. BC sent Kye Robichaux up the middle, but he was stopped for no gain by the Hokies’ Jaden Keller. Virginia Tech took over, scored a touchdown three plays later and the Boston College surge was over in the Hokies 42-21 win.

1:37 fourth quarter – North Carolina State vs. Cal

Cal trailed 24-23 when it faced a fourth-and-4 at the North Carolina State 10-yard line with 1:37 left in the game. In came freshman Cal kicker Derek Morris, kicking in his first collegiate game after replacing Ryan Coe as the Bears’ place-kicker. Morris was 3-for-3 on field goal attempts when he stepped up for the go-ahead chip shot from 28 yards out. But did not hit the ball cleanly and flutter wide right. Cal lost 24-23, its fourth straight defeat by a combined margin of nine points.

1:23 fourth quarter – Florida State vs. Duke

Despite committing four turnovers, Florida State had rallied from a 17-3 deficit to climb within seven points at 23-16 when it had a first down at the Duke 38-yard line with 1:23 left in the game. But FSU quarterback Brock Glenn was sacked by Duke’s Vincent Anthony Jr. and Wesley Williams for a 9-yard loss. PSU was penalized five more yards for a false start on the next play and the Seminoles could not convert after facing a second-and-24, preserving Duke’s 23-16 victory.

10:43 fourth quarter – Louisville vs. Miami

Louisville trailed Miami 45-38 when it got a first down at the Miami 45-yard line with 10:43 left in the game. On that first-down play, Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough was called for intentional grounding – a 22-yard loss plus loss of down. Facing a second-and-32, the Cardinals were forced to punt three plays later, and Miami scored an insurance touchdown on its ensuing possession with a time-consuming 80-yard drive. Miami won 52-45.

Another week of ACC football and another week of controversy. It can't escape the conference or the officials. Or Miami.

For the third time in four weeks, the Hurricanes were locked in a tight game in the fourth quarter. Again, a call on the field went against Miami and led to a scoop and score for Louisville, only to have the call overturned without indisputable video evidence. It all led the Hurricanes leaving Kentucky with a 52-45 victory over Louisville.

As far as the rest of the conference goes, Virginia Tech started the weekend early on Thursday night with a 42-21 win over Boston College at home behind a record-breaking night for running back Bhayshul Tuten. He set the all-time single-game rushing record with 266 yards and four touchdowns, three on the ground, against the Eagles.

Friday night, Duke picked up their first win ever over Florida State, 23-16, at home, then on Saturday, Clemson put up 48 points at home in a win over Virginia. North Carolina State traveled West to California and rallied in the fourth quarter to beat the Bears, 24-23 in a battle of winless conference teams. SMU steamrolled Stanford, 40-10, while Wake Forest won by three points at Connecticut, and Georgia Tech lost to Notre Dame in non-conference matchups. Before we look ahead to Week 9, here are the latest ACC Football Power Rankings.

This week offers some very interesting matchups. Syracuse will travel to Pittsburgh on Thursday night, and then Boston College will host Louisville on Friday night in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Saturday, Virginia Tech hosts Georgia Tech, Miami will host in-state rival Florida State, and a huge 8 p.m. matchup on the ACC Network will have Duke hosting SMU. With that schedule and some matchups, there is bound to be more shifting for next week's rankings.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/spor...ge-football-miami-clemson-week-8/75765086007/ (udatoday.com; Meyer)

The top of the ACC held serve in Week 8 of the 2024 college football season.

Miami remained undefeated with another close win. Clemson continued to roll. SMU picked up yet another impressive win in what has been a strong debut season in the ACC. Pitt and Syracuse enjoyed hard-earned weeks off in advance of their Thursday night matchup in the Steel City.

With those results in mind, here’s how the ACC’s 17 teams stack up after Week 8:

ACC football power rankings

1. Miami (7-0, 3-0 ACC)

  • Last week: 1
  • This week: vs. Florida State
The Hurricanes are no longer untested — with its past three victories coming by a combined 12 points — but they remain undefeated. In a 52-45 win at Louisville, Cam Ward bolstered his Heisman candidacy with 319 passing yards and four touchdowns. If there is an area of concern, it’s Miami’s defense, which has surrendered an average of 39 points per game in its past three victories.

2. Clemson (6-1, 5-0)

  • Last week: 2
  • This week: Bye
The Tigers’ Week 1 loss to Georgia raised questions about whether there was something fundamentally broken with Garrett Riley’s offense, with just three points and 188 total yards. Consider those answered. Clemson has averaged 48.5 points per game in its past six contests and has only once failed to score at least 40. Miami, with its undefeated record, remains on top, but there’s a persuasive case to be made that this is the ACC’s best team.

3. Pitt (6-0, 2-0)

  • Last week: 3
  • This week: vs. Syracuse
After being idle over the weekend, the Panthers — and their secondary, in particular — will get a tough test Thursday with a game against Kyle McCord and Syracuse.

4. SMU (6-1, 3-0)

  • Last week: 4
  • This week: at Duke
The Mustangs’ 40-10 rout of Stanford on Saturday earned coach Rhett Lashlee’s team bowl eligibility. While SMU obviously has much bigger goals this season, that accomplishment can’t be overlooked. For 22 consecutive seasons, the Mustangs failed to make a bowl game, with many of those years spent dealing with the devastating effect of the NCAA’s death penalty. This year will mark the ninth time they’ve made a bowl in the past 16 seasons.

5. Syracuse (5-1, 2-1)

  • Last week: 5
  • This week: at No. 20 Pitt
A win Thursday night against Pitt would get the Orange to bowl eligibility. Like with SMU, that can’t be minimized. It would mark the first time since 1995-99 that Syracuse went bowling in at least three consecutive seasons.

The ACC's two top 10-ranked teams finished with wins on Saturday, although Miami had to avoid a scare against Louisville.
The No. 6 Hurricanes defeated Louisville 52-45 on Saturday, winning another game in shootout fashion behind Cam Ward's four touchdown passes. Meanwhile, No. 9 Clemson handled Virginia with ease, taking down the Cavaliers 48-31 as Virginia scored 21 points in the fourth quarter.

Both Miami (7-0, 3-0 in ACC play) and Clemson (6-1, 5-0) are undefeated in conference play and stand atop the ACC standings, with Pitt (6-0, 2-0) and SMU (6-1, 3-0) right behind.

The Panthers were off in Week 8, though the Mustangs were able to strengthen their position with a 40-10 win on the road at Stanford on Saturday. The only other conference meeting on Saturday took place between NC State and Cal, with the Wolfpack upending the Golden Bears 24-23. Wake Forest won a nonconference game vs. UConn, 23-20, whereas Georgia Tech fell in a neutral-site game vs. Notre Dame, 31-13.

‘Lockerbie’ trailer: New TV show follows bombing that killed 35 Syracuse University students (PS; Herbert)

Peacock has released the first trailer for a new TV show about the 1988 Lockerbie bombing that left 35 Syracuse University students dead.

“Lockerbie: A Search for Truth” stars Oscar-winning actor Colin Firth as Jim Swire, who was nominated spokesperson for the UK victims’ families as they seek justice in the Pan Am Flight 103 air disaster on December 21, 1988. Swire’s daughter Flora was among the 270 people that died in the tragedy, including 35 SU students who were studying abroad at the time and headed home for the holidays when their plane exploded over the town of Lockerbie, Scotland, killing 11 residents in the Scottish town.

“Traveling across continents and political divides, Jim embarks on a relentless journey that not only jeopardizes his stability, family and life, but completely overturns his trust in the justice system,” a synopsis says. “As the truth shifts under Jim’s feet, his view of the world is left forever changed. Exploring events from the disaster and its aftermath, ‘Lockerbie: A Search For Truth’ provides an intimate account of a man, a husband, and a father who risks everything in memory of his daughter and the unflinching pursuit of truth and justice.”

The five-part series is written by Scottish playwright David Harrower, who also executive produces alongside Oscar-nominated screenwriters Jim Sheridan (“In the Name of the Father,” “My Left Foot”) and Kirsten Sheridan (“In America,” “Dollhouse”). The cast includes Catherine McCormack, Rosanna Adams, Jemma Carlton, Harry Redding, Sam Troughton, Mark Bonner, Ardalan Esmaili and Selwa Jghalef.

‘Christmas Vacation’ reunion: New holiday movie to premiere in Central NY (PS; Herbert)
A new movie featuring a highly-anticipated “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” reunion is set to premiere in Central New York.

“The Christmas Letter,” which was shot in the Mohawk Valley area this past winter, will make its debut Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Stanley Theatre in Utica. The screening event will begin at 6 p.m.

Tickets will be $5 and go on sale Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 10:30 a.m. in person at the Stanley box office or by phone at 315-724-4000 (will call only). It’s unclear if any tickets will also be available online.

The Christmas Letter,” directed by Tori Hunter and written by Ilion, N.Y., native Michael Cunningham, centers on an everyday man (played by Angus Benfield) who decides to top his wealthy friend’s annual Christmas letter by cashing out his 401K and takes his family on a year-long series of crazy adventures to create “the Christmas Letter to rival all Christmas Letters.”

The cast notably includes three actors who appeared in 1989′s “Christmas Vacation”: Chevy Chase, Randy Quaid (in his first movie in 6 years) and Brian Doyle-Murray. The holiday classic, written by John Hughes, starred Chase as family man Clark Griswold opposite Quaid as his Cousin Eddie and Doyle-Murray as his boss (who Eddie kidnaps when Clark complains about his holiday bonus).

Scenes for “The Christmas Letter” were shot in January throughout CNY, including a home and church in Clinton, Utica’s City Hall, the Valley View Golf Course, the Woods Valley ski area in Westernville, Thrive Athletic Center in New Hartford, and The Stanley Theatre in Utica. Chase filmed scenes at the Fort Schuyler Club in Utica while Quaid separately filmed his role in Vermont, though Quaid still made a virtual appearance in Utica for a video call with Chase’s character that will appear in the film.

“I was born and raised in Ilion and had always dreamed of bringing something back to the valley in some way,” Cunningham said in a statement. “And while I didn’t build a factory, I did create a story which was built on my life here, so it only made sense to film here. The Utica/Rome/Mohawk Valley region has so much to offer filmmakers. There is a vast palette of unique landscapes and buildings imbued with character and history, and the people are the best.”
