Just played in the annual golf fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club of Syracuse. It raises between $40 - 50K each year. If you ever have the opportunity to play, do it. Great cause and lots of fun. It has played help at the Cavalry Club near Manlius for years. Nice course. They always do a good job hosting it.

GMac played in a group with Kip Wellman, Jay Feeley and (I think) Jason Poles. After the round, right after dinner, he spoke briefly to all duo attended and took done questions from the crowd.

Highlights:

He started off talking about the great news from this week. He sud Tyus is one of the greatest scorers the program Hs ever had. He pointed out once Tyus announced he was staying, every player tweeted back to him, excited by the news. He said the team was going to be good regardless but having Tyus back makes the players believe something special can happen this season. His presence means a lot to the other players.

He said Elijah Hughes is a basketball player. He has size, strength and physical ability but the thing that sets him apart is how smart he is. Even compared him to Lebron James in terms of hoops iq. Gerry coaches the guards and Elijah mostly works with him but Gerry talked about him playing more as a 3 than as a 2. He didn’t say this was going to happen but agin, he talked about him playing more at the 3 than the 2. The thought is having Frank and Tyus at the guard spots and Elijah at the 3 might be our best lineup offensively.

Said with the new rules where the staff can work with players in the summer, he thinks most schools are using the time to coach the whole team as one unit. Syracuse is using the time to coach players individually on skill development. So he is spending an hour with each guard working on their skillls. Gerry said he had Elijah took 500 3 point shots during his hour.

He also worked with Howard Washington for an hour today. Says he is ahead of schedule after the knee surgery and is scheduled to start full contact type drills in September,

He said at the point, Buddy Boeheim is the best shooter he has seen at Syracuse. That includes Andy Rautins and Trevor Cooney. Said the kid is legit. Someone asked if he can shoot better than Gerry. Gerry just smiled and said ‘next question!’.

Said because he recruited Sidibe, it was really hard to watch him try to play hurt all last season. The reason he played so well against Pitt is because he was shut down for 10 days and was relatively healthy for the first time in months. Bourama is telling him he feels good for the first time in a long time, which makes Gerry feel great.

Said this is the first time in years the team has real depth and he thinks it will be great to be able to rest players and keep everyone fresh.

Someone asked him about players getting paid. He said he was torn on it. He went a player like Tim Tebow makes millions for a school, it seems fair he should get some of that money. Said when he was at SU, he thought he was responsible for bringing in a lot of money. He wished he could have been paid when he was, aging at SU. But he also realizes that the income producing sports make money to help allow non-revenue producing sports to be played. Or to help build badly needed academic buildings. He is glad the players are getting some money now and also have access to more meals now (he closed them grab and go) than when he played.

He also talked about how important the cause was and how much he appreciated people coming out and supporting it.

It was a good talk. He lo0ks much more comfortable talking in front of crowds than he once did,

Thank you for the report!

Between the ‘best shooter’ and ‘keeping guys fresh’ comments I think this probably answers the Buddy redshirt question.

Agreed that Hughes at the 3 probably gives us our best offensive lineup, wonder how he’ll be defensively there? We know we can be really good defensively if/when we play MD there.

The comment about Sidibe being healthy for that Pitt game is pretty intriguing. Pitt was historically awful but Sidibe did have 18 and 16 in that game. If he could just give us half of that...

Thanks Tomcat! Awesome recap. Sounds like a great event for a great cause.

Interesting that they’re choosing to spend their extra coaching time on individual drills. Sounds like they’re trying to get the fundamentals right and make strides (in terms of talent) before the team-wide instructions begin.

And I especially liked your last point about Gmac’s public speaking. We often think about player development, but coaching development goes on behind the scenes as well.

Thought he was playing in the TBT... wouldn’t that be something!

Thanks for the great report. Really excited about 2018-19 season.

Jim said Hughes was a top 25 player. Several accounts had Elijah giving Tyus everything he could handle in practice.

Posters on this board said without tyus ( still four returning starters ) we were bubble team at best.

You decide who you want to listen to .

Great stuff. Thanks for posting Tomcat. It seems from G-Mac to Katie Kowalski everyone around the program thinks pretty highly of Eli Hughes. Really looking forward to seeing what he does this coming season.

Well, we were a bubble team last year with Tyus, so...

That would have been embarrassing if we brought him here only to find out he wasn't in fact a basketball player.

(I'm kidding, great report.)

Kind of like with Geno Thorpe.

Thank you, Tom! Although I don’t want summer to flash by in a nanosecond, it does make one look forward to basketball season. I just hope Gerry didn’t give Jimmy the “Cooney kiss of death” by bragging about his skills. At least he didn’t say he thought Jimmy is a better shooter than he was!

Wrong brother. We already saw lil Jimmy bang a 3 against us about a min into a game.

Thank you tomcat for a really interesting and fun read. Off-season can be slow and boring at times, but posts like this really help.

I especially liked Gerry's comment about other teams working on their entire team, but us working more on individual skills. Very interesting that he would bring this up specifically, calling out what we're doing different. Would have loved him to go into a bit more detail about the thought process behind that!

Thanks, Tom -- always great to hear these first hand reports.

Need to avoid injuries this year. If we can, then maybe Brissett was onto something when he suggested that he came back to be "...part of something special."

I think we're going to have a lot more offensive firepower this season than last.

Shooters know and see when other shooters are good, great, or Curry.

A couple of things.

When GMac talked about Buddy, he was talking about at this point in his career; the summer before his frosh season.

When GMac talked about Elijah and brought up LeBron James, he was talking about James' basketball IQ; how intelligent he is and what great decisions he makes on the court. Hence the term 'basketball player'.

He sees similarities in this area with Elijah. He was not saying he is another Lebron James.

It seems to me as though some people on this board are hell bent to convince anyone who has any information to not post it under any circumstances. Weird and sad.

I'm sorry for the confusion if that's what you took from my post.

Eh, I was just trying to distill it down to the most ridiculous overreactions a person could have.

Because we all know that's immediately where some people are gonna go. :bang:;)
