grantland blows

Couldn't agree more. For 5 days, I looked forward to reading this article, and this is what I was given? I don't blame Grantland for this, but instead the author, whomever he may be, for not answering the question he was supposed to: Why Syracuse Will Win a National Championship? I thought the articles written over the course of the week were written very well, and definitely made the case for each team winning. But I think this guy spent a grand total of one paragraph talking about this year's team. I also wasn't sure where he was even getting a lot of his information from. Overall, I am incredibly disappointed with this article.

What do you expect from a guy who's name is Bent Dick. Or am I reading that wrong?

...wasnt the article supposedly from a fan's perspective...who was the fan...I would have presumed the fan came from our board...ugh

Somebody watched 'Gasland' this week!

He lost me here:
Still, the Orange will likely begin the season starting another imported big man, Baye Moussa Keita from Senegal, who suffered from a hand injury last season.

Took a while to get into it, but that's the best description of Scoop, Triche, and the Bubakar Aw Georgetown teams I've ever read-

... almost possessed the proto-militant cachet of a historically black university. They even had piping with African print on their uniforms...

i don't think i've ever read a more overwrought pompous pointless first paragraph to a sports story.

i don't care what you think about fracking you frackface

First of all if you're from Rochester the day you call a Garbage Plate a trash plate is the day pigs fly. Although, I do agree with this line, "Unlike Duke, Kentucky, or North Carolina, Syracuse lacks a a repulsively privileged fan base, a sleazy coach, or a tiresome reputation as a cradle for virtuous manhood."

Dude's name is Ben Dedrick. More like Bend Over. Guy says he is from Rochester but I don't think he is a real upstate guy but one of those transplant city slickers. If you can't take the snow and cold more the frick out of here.

I would not have expected that article after reading some of the others. Very poorly done.

Plenty of places will correct you if you ask for a Garbage Plate®, I thought that was a subtle "I'm from Rochester" tell.

He also didn't mention SU football... another sign you're from Rochester.

Wait, he didn't mention Screamers or 12 Horse Ale... THIS GUY'S A CARPETBAGGER!!!

Ben Detrick has contributed to the New York Times, Village Voice, and Northeastern Dogfighting Quarterly. He lives in New York City and will spend this fall weaning himself off boat shoes.

What a tool.

From the comments I take it that there isn'ta single soul who either likes or agrees with the article. Therefore I will not waste a second of my life reading it.

Well there is the local color angle, though I did take offense to the part about virtuous men.

he needs to be on anti-depressants --what about the beautiful finger lakes, fall color, snowmobiling, the myriad of things to do, ethnic festivals, harborfest etc. ----he needs an attitude adjustment---or look for work elsewhere.----the first paragraph reads like it was written by a rutgers fan.

The feeling I got reading this article was that it was not a sports article but more a literary piece that just happened to discuss sports. It was less about SU'11-'12 hoops than about allegedly being a sports fan in Upstate NY. I'm not a big fan of mixing sports and politics either, which is how he led off.

It's funny that he's written articles for the NYT, because while reading the opening paragraph, I was thinking that this is exactly how people in NYC view Upstate NY. He comes across as a pompous a-hole, imo.

I'm as upstate as they come. I love upstate NY. Spent my first 24 years in upstate. Did undergrad and grad school at Syracuse. Was born in Cooperstown, lived in New Berlin, then Johnson City, then went to SU.

Why are people getting up in arms? Upstate isn't the best place in the world, but we all still love it in spite of that fact.

I think he sums up my feelings pretty well. Upstate sucks, so what. It's our home. Suck it. We love Cuse bball.

Did everyone here just get out of sensitivity training?

Haven't read the SU piece.

Read the OSU piece, and my expectations for our piece went way down.

I know they're not supposed to be objective assessments, but the OSU piece was a stretch.

For example (paraphrasing) 'I know we lost Diebler, one of the best Big 10 shooters of all time, but between these 3 guys who arent' half as good as Diebler, we'll easily cover his production.'

And then 'We lost Buford, the heart and soul of our defense, but we have a Freshman (or soph) who's got a lot of spunk and should have no problems filling that hole for us.'

Sounds like ours was worse, though. At least the OSU homer talked exclusively about OSU hoops.

The OSU one was written by the Club Trillion blogger. If you were expecting Frank Deford, you would be disappointed.

I'm gonna go eat a Garbage Plate® for lunch and you all should too.

Or take some fiber or prunes or get a colonic or something, geezis.

Not saying this guy's the next Jay Mohr but there's some nuggs in there.

All the other fan articles are rah-rah and the one from a Syracuse fan is measured, self-deprecating, and even stark... kinda like the difference between this and any random UK board.

grantland is actually an awesome site... but yea this particular article was kinda mehhhh
