The overwhelming theories thus far on Fab's ineligibility have been academics and/or drugs. Now, I don't want to assume that a player in using drugs. And since he was eligible in between suspensions (and I don't believe Jim or anyone in the program would risk vacating wins), it would seem weird that the issue was academic.

What if the issue was that SU caught him in contact with an agent? We all have known Fab was going pro for weeks now. If he wasn't a huge fan of classes, and knew he'd be drafted, would it be out of the question for him to be in touch with an agent? If SU caught wind of that, and suspended him so that NCAA Tourney wins wouldn't be vacated, could that be what's going on here?

I have no inside info, and I have no specific reason to believe this is the case. I was just curious if this hypothetical that someone mentioned to me made sense to anyone else.

A player can have contact or speak with an agent. He just can't take anything.

Well, somebody here did post that he saw Fab amongst "well-dressed gentlemen" following the Cincy game. But I think the agent angle is unlikely given the comments made by Scoop and JB today.

That was me. But for all I know it was his brother. But my 1st reaction was this doesn't look good.

Well, many agents aren't known for being squeaky clean. If there was contact, perhaps they looked into it and felt he may have received something. It's all speculation, and I admit it's probably not the case. Just interesting.

you can talk to them, you just cant hire one right?

I don't like to spread hearsay thus unless its hard evidence we shouldn't start these speculation threads. Fab is gone for a reason and from what JB said in his interview with Marty Snyder SU had no choice but suspend the guy. It was obvious from his body language SU's hand was forced that is all.

Was it the yakuza?

I think DC was wearing a suit in the Garden.

Exactly Alsacs. We have enough people in the media and on the fan sites for other teams who are engaged in wide-ranging and hurtful speculation. There is absolutely NO reason for SU fans to do the same.

Now if Bees or Jake or someone else with connections to the University and/or basketball program gets wind of something from trusted sources and wants to share, that's another thing altogether.

Someone informed me today that it could very well have been academics. If Fab had an incomplete(s) and an extension was requested he would have been suspended while waiting for the extension to be okayed by the school and NCAA. Once the extension was granted he would have until spring break to finish the course work. Spring break started this past Sunday.

Reading between the lines of what was said at the press conferences today, if they were preparing for Fab not being available, it has to be a continuation of the earlier problem (whatever that was).

A professor from an area college called in one of the local sports shows and said just what you said probably happened. He said if Fab got an incomplete last semester, at his college the student would have until mid-term the next semester to satisfy the professors requirements. He said that Fab may have failed to complete the requirement or didn't do it to the professors satisfaction so the incomplete reverts to a failure.

I have no idea if this is the case personally but it would make sense including the timing.

Most plausible explanation I've heard to date. The reality is, I don't really much care what the reason was as long as everything is copacetic. I've moved on.

I seem to recall that JB said on the first occassion that Fab has to do something or something has to happen for Fab to be eligible to play again. That sure made it seem as if it were something about academics, at least the first time around. What else could be so easily fixed?

If true, then screw him for not doing the work. I mean, What? Suspend him an extra week and banish him to a solitary room in the Melo Center to complete the work!!!

I checked my post about JB's 1/27/12 "Coach's Show":

I asked the coach if he could talk about the procedures involved with the Fab Melo decision. I told Him I realized that he couldn’t release any private information but when exactly are we waiting for and when is it likely to be decided. “It’s not a decision. It’s stuff that has to get done. That’s all I can tell you.” I told him that the absence of information has allowed the rumor mill to work overtime. I said the strangest one was that he’d submitted a test with the answers in Portuguese. he laughed and said that was not the problem. “There is no timetable for Melo. He’s able to practice. He still has to get done whatever needs to be done to get back.”

I don't really care...he is dead to me now!

Give me a Josh Pace, Kueth Duany, Andy Rautins any day.

This seems fairly plausible.

I haven't heard ONE not ONE credible Person say anything other than it was an Academic Issue in regards to Fab :bang:

If we buy into the INC and the extension of time to complete the work, due by Spring break, then I am more angry with Fab and the System of tutors, mentors and managers 'Cuse has for its basketball players.
What... are you telling me that Fab, along with probably two other academic helpers were "asleep" at the switch for him to complete the work. This would be a crime that so easily could have been avoided. I do not buy this explanation that Fab missed completing work...if it is true; than the whole effort of academic help at Syracuse FAILED. We are not talking about how smart or not Fab is; we are talking about completing an exercise, a test, a paper. Surely this should have been avoided. Shame on the University's mentoring/turtoring system and I would like to know the asst coach assigned to making sure this stuff got done..."how many academic tutors, mentors, and asst coaches take to screw in a light bulb...What

This seems fairly plausible.

And really, Fab probably figured he has 2-3 weeks left to play and then he was all done anyway, probably thinking they would not suspend him at this point with just a few weeks left. FAB being a kid who seems a bit arrigant to boot tells everyone that he is leaving for the NBA next year, figures he is home free, no more school, etc etc this semester. which is fine if you were all clear from last semester, Fab is doing nothing, practicing and partying, SU calls him in Tuesday and tells him he is suspended/ ineligible for not completeing the work for last semester and he figured it would not matter because he is done with school at this point, etc etc... SU just said, not so fast my friend, we are blwoing the whistle. I would imagine JB is not pleased at all with this. I would imagine FAB quit going to class a couple of months ago in any capacity

I have said this 100 times but any kid who is definitely coming out for the NBA pretty much quits going to class spring semester anyway, as once the season is over you are getting ready for combines, training. I would actually say if you are definitely coming out, you are better off training than going to class your last semester, whcih I would imagine Mr Waiters is doing
