Doesn't it make sense that the Holiday Bowl itself would be paying McCord and Mateer NIL $ to play in the game? The bowl makes money by having higher TV ratings. A shootout gets them higher ratings, which they would then parlay into a higher TV deal next year. ESPN would benefit by being able to sell ads at higher rates next year, under the assumption that the Holiday Bowl would do the same thing next year. Win-Win-Win. And this is the true intention of NIL funding, not pay for play like it has become (thanks SEC ).

Does anyone think that the influx of NIL for Mateer (as Tomcat mentioned in another thread) is coming from the bowl rather than the WSU NIL coffers?

Bowls paying NIL has been discussed a lot on this board. In theory what you say is correct. However, they would have a hard time making an argument that it isn't pay for play. It's kind of stupid because everyone knows that all of this is functionally pay for play and not really name/image/likeness, but until rules change that's where we are.

With the declining participation and status of the non playoff seasonal bowl games, it is hard to imagine it will not come to paying star players to compete in the future to keep these games viable.

Hard to say. I'd like to see that for us fans but those same bowls are crushing it in the ratings.

Seems to me if the bowl were paying them NIL you'd see ads for the bowl with, well, their NIL.

I remember when I was a kid seeing ads that were like "C'mon down to the Dome for McNabb [McNabb McNabb]" That sort of thing.
