How does Red show fans he has the right handle on a rotation?

What's the most important thing Red could do to show he's improved how he handles a rotation?

Hey all, as the roster has shaped up I've noticed that there's across the board (get it?) agreement that Red needs to evolve as a coach when it comes to handling the rotation.

Where the discussion breaks down is we're not expressing a whole lot of consistency as to what good handling of the rotation means. So it got me thinking, how does Red win here? What can Red do to 1) show his growth as a head coach and 2) increase fan confidence in him when it comes to handling the rotation next season?

This past season was rough because there were some very clear talent and roster limitations. It looks like if that hasn't been resolved fully, next season there's at least a much better base of raw talent and roster fits.

So I put it to you, how does Red win? How does he show he's handling the rotation like a good head coach would?

I think the first thing he needs to do is PICK A LANE.

Any of those options you list could be an effective system / approach. And maybe it varies slightly from year to year, based upon personnel.

But first, pick a lane and then run your rotations that way.

Roles and substitution patterns are defined
Wins middle 8 mins more often (last 4 of 1H, first of 2H)
Last 4-8 mins of game when offense bogs down, they are prepared for last resort. Don’t panic

Be flexible, be smart, show some sense of feel for the current game, demand effort, etc.

What he did this past year with subbing the starters out together 8-10 minutes in, playing with backups together and then barely subbing much after was crazy. It showed no ability to understand his team, the game at hand or demand better.

1. Freeman plays 36mpg
2. If a player is very clearly playing well, let them play.
3. Substitute based on what we aren’t doing or what an opponent is doing, i.e. go big, go small, extra ball handler, etc. This is the essence of coaching when it comes to rotational adjustments.
4. IMO we should know the core 7-8man rotation that all play >15mpg by Dec.

You also rotate players to give them a rest even if they are on a roll. We’re not playing zone. If you want to play man, rotations also have to be made to keep guys fresh. MOST coaches at the 12-13 minute mark in the first half start subbing. People complain about sub patterns, but Red was very consistent subbing at this point. If you watched Duke, Scheyer rotated at that 12 minute mark in both halves unless foul trouble caused immediate changes. It was tough for Red because he never knew what he was going to get when he subbed. The bench was never consistent with their performance. It’s easier to sub when you have consistent talent coming off the bench. Duke’s first four subs would start at SU. That’s pretty easy to rotate players. I anticipate much better success next year with substitution patterns. If you don’t want to lose players to the portal, coaches have to get players on the floor.

Don't send a player to the score table and then call the player back to the bench just because the player who was going to be subbed out made a shot or some other good play.

This happened multiple times this past season.
JB did this all the time and he never wanted to sub.

It was remedial this past year.

He has to get substitutions right next year to win the games we should win.

Maybe another year and he gets smarter and his feel for the game improves... or it will be like getting blood from a stone and it won't get better.

Good thoughts and discussion so far, also surprised to see the poll actually got a pretty good number of responses pretty quickly.

Basically a combination of all three.

He finally had a decent rotation going the last 5-6 games. We had some success at least getting some double digit leads and winning a few games.

But real-time decision making needs to be there, too. Understanding a guy is hot and riding that or realizing line ups where we match up with a certain lineup might favor us are important.

Pre NIL I would have said flex bench minutes to develop. Now under NIL Wild West, win now and ride your thoroughbreds.

Basketball team is now the equivalent of a running back in football.

Could not agree more. Basically you have to go and do every season expecting every player is essentially a one year contract

Moneyball this situation. The roster is being constructed a certain way right now with him and Kline. They gotta play it that way.

Give these guys roles early. Make George the man in the backcourt and Donnie the man in the front court. Those 2 run the show and are on the court as much as possible. We’re not going to win games if both of them are on the bench for long periods.

JJ, Kingz, and Kyle play to their strengths but are 20-25 min a game guys and then we go to the bench.

That's an interesting comparison.

One way is to win a few close games against teams that are similar in talent. Another is blow out less talented teams.
Offensively run a system that isn't dependent on iso to work.
Defensively show that we can actually defend in man defense.
Have people be able to defend and switch if necessary.
Use pressure to speed up the game and create turnovers, for easy buckets.

Wow, this will be tough for Red. Many new players, many young players. If Red wants to run even the two returnees will have to adjust to a new system.

You know many guys will be erratic, bringing it one game and being off the next game.

Players, especially frosh, will make some mistakes. Who will sulk and who will learn and not repeat ???

The one thing that can be consistent is effort. I hope the guys that deliver the Big E will be rewarded with the most PT.

The portent for the season will be the early season "bunny" games. It wont be enough to just win - we will need to dominate and win by big margins - 20, 30, or even more points to show that this team can be competitive and possibly even a tournament team.

yeah agreed good post

idgaf if he has some set pattern or whatever as long as it enhances winning

he has been wway too rigid in his ways...its ridiculously easy to game plan against him and he often made weird subbing/player decisions

needs to be IN THE MOMENT and flexible

Semi related

It killed me when we would call a timeout and immediately have a turnover on the next play. Something totally sloppy like throwing the ball away. Like what are we even discussing in the huddle?? Seemed to happen waaaaayyy too often
