How the Syracuse football schedule gets made: Q&A with John Wildhack, Herm Frazier

Tremendous article... I find the philosophy behind it fascinating. Some of what they spoke of was directly opposite of what fans may consider.

Like them saying they like the flexibility of only having the schedule filled out into the near future, whereas most people I've heard love the idea of having the schedule locked in for years to come.

Wildhack chiming in is interesting, I really, really like the admin we've got in place.

Schedule teams that we can easily move the ball on and provide experience for 2nd and 3rd stringers, building competent depth!

Is Fraziers job scheduling opponents a full time job at SU?

Frazier and Shafer really thought after squeaking into the Texas Bowl they would be competitive with LSU? Nah.

Good article. Good to see the future schedule get easier from a non-conference perspective.

Props to Nate Mink. That was a good interview filled with a lot of interesting discussion.
Best bit in there, from a novelty standpoint: UCLA and Arizona State called us trying to set up games. UCLA called twice.

UCLA was on my list of "dream schools if you could schedule someone interesting", in a thread here a couple months ago.

I hope Dino stays here long enough to make that happen.

A guy I know told me about that ASU game potential a while ago. Frazier is friends with a few people here.

It was two years later, why wouldn't you think you could be competitive?

If you're a coach coming off a 7-6 1st season and you're unsure you'll be competitive against a top-25 team in 2 years... how do I say this politely...

Frazier: "Have not had any conversations with West Virginia."

We don't negotiate with Mountaineers.

we have scheduling under control and fortunately (or unfortunately) that excuse will be removed from our list of excuses after bad seasons. if we don't go bowling, it's an indictment on the coaching vs the insane scheduling of yesteryear. I have no aspirations of winning the ACC division we're in but we should be able to squeeze out 2-3 wins per season

We have averaged 2.25 conference wins since joining the ACC and made a bowl game once.

I think we need to bump up that conference average to 3-4 games and lose the marquee OOC game, unless it's ND's year. As you say - the win part is on the staff. The schedule part is on the AD. It sounds like we'll be avoiding LSUs and Wisconsins for a while.

Eh perhaps you're right but LSU is always a team that contends for a national title and I think that is slightly higher than SU's ambitions for now. But it's passed us and we move on.

Dino does. Not this year or next, but 4-6 years from now with the right talent for the scheme... why not?
