ESPN Classic this afternoon showed the SU/BC game from 1985 at Boston Garden. Both teams played zone for the majority of the game and, in fact, it was boring. Both did play some man-to-man as well. It was amazing how "packed in" the zone was back then since there was no three point line. Our guards at the top of the zone were playing around the free throw line. Also, another major change since then is the "hands in the air" which we have been accustomed to in recent years in an effort to deflect passes. That was not evident in that 1985 game.

Anyway, I thought it was an interesting evolution.

One of the best things about JB's 2-3 is the adaptability of it. He has the athletes in the backcourt to stretch out the zone a good 5 feet from it's base set when playing against great shooters. That little tweek alone has completely ruined other coaches' gameplans.

I think the coaches are much better at doing drills in practice so players know how to shift based on ball movement. I just love it when the team gets to the point where all five players shift in unison. This year's team is not there yet.

And another thing they do much better at is collapsing or trapping to a spot depending on where the ball goes.
