A good theoretical question posted earlier got me thinking...

If every College Football team was forced to create an NFL roster (essentially a two-deep) of their best players since 1980...who would be on your Syracuse Two Deep and WHERE would you stack them against all the other teams that colleges would put together? (obviously some major speculation here)

I'll answer my second question first, I'd controversially say #12, because I think we've had some high-end guys. I'll start with a few positions:

QB1 MacNabb
QB2 Dungey

FB 1 Johnston
FB2 Konrad

MLB1 Bullock
MLB2 M Jones

WCB1 Joseph
WCB2 G Williams

Interesting that I think we have two players on this team (could very well be wrong and expect to be proven so)

Interesting picks. Dungey over McPherson or Graves? No Kevin Abrams at CB? FB is interesting. Moose was a stud blocker but Konrad may have had more dynamic offensive ability.

2nd QB really tough.

Abrams could be on Short side CB

Moose was a stud NFL player

Just my thoughts

Yeah i don’t think Dungey beats out McPherson. Donnie didn’t have a great NFL career but I believe he did go for a bit right?

if this is “Modern Day“ players Ok. But if it’s all players Larry Csonka beats them all.

I think there’s some pretty DBs, not sue I could rank them. Will Allen should bring the discussion, also Kevin’s Abrams…

Darius and Jones would be the safeties.

I'll give it a go.

QB- McNabb, McPherson
HB- Morris, Reyes, Tucker
FB- Johnston, Konrad
WR- Harrison, Johnson
TE- Gedney, Williams
OL- Pugh
OL- Wolfley
OL- Flannery
OL- Wohlabaugh
OL- Terry
WR- Monk, Moore

DE- Freeney, C. Jones
DT- Gregory, Mitchell
DT- Winter, A Jones
DE- Green, Burnett
LB- Bulluck, Greenwood
LB- Collins, M. Jones
LB- Wooden, Hogue
CB- Abrams, Melifonwu
S- Darius, Cisco
S- T. Jones, Paul
CB- Allen

So, I wasn't sure if I should emphasize college success or NFL. In most cases I leaned toward college. I also used mostly college position.

There are a few names on my list I'm not that familiar with but it was cool reading about them as I came up with this.

Nice. Jones brothers on DLine? TOugh I know

I’d consider Marquis Spruill at lb. That guy was a stud. Jones and Freeny as ends.
I had to put Green as a starting end. I couldn't put the all time career sack leader anywhere else.

OP set parameters to 1980. That makes Art Monk eligible, gotta go -
Harrison and Monk out wide.

I did.

Man I hope we can get back to getting 3-5 guys drafted every year.

Jones is better than Franklin

Mikel?

Tough to say before he ever plays a snap in the league. Zaire was a pretty good player at SU too.

Overall I think we field a pretty good NFL squad. I bet that’s one of the better ones you’d see outside of the Bama, Miami, USC, Ohio State’s of the world.

Oh, thought we were talking from a college performance perspective.

Yeah, I didn't phrase it well, but my question was how would an "NFL Roster" (52 players) of SU's Best fare against the field if everyone got to do it too?

I thought we'd sneak in as the 12 seed in the new expanded playoff, just cause we have so many high end stars (somewhat cheating using both College and Pro performance, like Marvin, etc)

Like we'd have two NFL HOF Defensive Ends in Freeney & Jones (so would some other teams, but we definitely would).

Anyway just a fun exercise

You were pretty clear, this one’s on the reader :)

Or Nassib? Or Philcox? Guys who actually stuck in the NFL. Love Dungey, but I’d have to think twice about that.

Kicker - Gary Anderson
Kicker - Olindo Mare

Yeah, I wasn't sure how heavily to weigh pro vs college success. I don't hold lack of NFL success against Graves and McPherson as much as would guys at other positions because the NFL didn't give many mobile QBs much of a chance back then. I wonder how they'd fair in today's game?

And I totally forgot about kickers.
