About this time of year I used to anxiously visit the local bookstores trolling for the newest CFB magazines. There was Lindy's and Athlon's and Steele's and others. Did an SU player make the cover? How did our recruiting class/players rate? Where were we picked?
It was a very early kickoff tradition to whet my appetite for the real thing come Sept. What with the immediacy of information due to the Internet, that tradition is over for me. There was a time we didn't know who our recruits were until the university released them on NLI day. I'm not exactly sad about this, just sharing a nuance of the older fan whose CFB traditions have been usurped by technology - like when the season ticket packet arrived in the mailbox.
In any event: Praise Fran Brown and pass the ammunition!

I haven't bought Phil Steele in a few years but I used to read that thing cover to cover throughout the entire summer. It's optimal bathroom reading. You can read about one team in about the amount of time it takes to... well I won't elaborate.

I still buy Athlon and Lindy, it isn’t as fun as it used to be but they are handy guides. I need to grab Athlon this weekend although from what I can see on their site, I don’t think they even have us in a bowl game which makes the issue annoying, even if it isn’t totally unfair with our schedule

Like we don't even exist...

They were simpler times.

I remember early to mid 90s or so there was a circular called Orange Insider or something like that. It was great. Used to love the hoops recruiting pages where they'd list the top 100 recruits and put in bold all of the ones Syracuse was involved with.

Yup. I remember reading those starting in the early to mid 90's. And so began my love for SU football recruiting. Those were great. I feel like there may have been a second one. Maybe the Big Orange?

Oh maybe Big Orange was the name.

I thought it had Juice in the name, but that might have been some regular article in it. Or my memory is completely wrong.

Damn…I’m getting old.
I think there was maybe something called "The Juice" and then I think i remember "The Juice - Online". Can't even remember what it was though. My memory sucks.

I think many of us older farts can relate to this as a nostalgic tradition and bonding experience with our parents. This post is a little late to the party, though. Most of us stopped browsing magazines when bookstores went extinct... about 20 years ago.
