Not a lot of kids would take a redshirting this way, especially when Coach and Trevor know that he is a capable player. He is going to be a leader and a very composed player during his time here. A breath of fresh air to see a young man acting mature in a touchy situation.

I'm sure he is bummed out about red-shirting but I think JB is right that its going o wind up being good for both Trevor and SU.

I give a ton of credit to any kid that's willing to redshirt. At 18, I seriously doubt I would be mature enough to do it if I was a star athelete. If I thought there was even chance I was sitting out a year I would go somewhere else.

When he was recruited I am sure everyone thought Dion would be gone. This also explains why we didn't sign a guard this year.

Well, just look at what an extra year did for Andy's game. Cooney is farther along physically than Andy at the same stage, so imagine the potential when he's in his third or fourth year in the program. He'll be a star.

Good point. Andy's in the freakin NBA!!! Im sure the coaches brought that up to cooney. If andy left after his junior year (really his senior year without the redshirt) he doesn't even sniff the nba. His tremendous 5th year is he reason he made the nba. Same thing can happen to cooney.

Fwiw, Gmac has really taken him under his wing. Like it was mentioned above, he's a lot more physical than I thought he was/would be. Give him a couple years and he'll be a player.

It helps to have a guy like Lazarus Sims sitting on the bench next to Cooney all year long. A guy that also used a redshirt year, and a guy that lead his team to a National Championship game by the time he was a 5th year senior.

I am disappointed, as I think Cooney was the key to this recruiting class. However, the way this is playing out makes sense and did not surprise me. Watch out, though; this kid is going to be great.

I think it's probably a smart move for Trevor to redshirt, but assuming everyone returns next year who's eligible, he'll be the 4th guard next year! Hard to imagine that he's excited about that.

At one point last night when Scoop got pulled I saw Cooney sprint to the open seat next to Adrian Autry just to listen to all the things that we being discussed. If he soaks up all the information he can with this staff and these experienced players, he could turn into a big time player. That shooting stroke might already be the best of the guards we have.

Being the 4th guard on what very well may be a preseason top-10 team as a freshman is nothing to sneeze at. Especially if you're the guard with a deadeye-shot that gets called in as a 3-point specialist.

Dion ain't staying longer than he needs to get to the NBA. Labor negotiations hold the key to SU next year.

All four of our guards are going to get solid run this year. I think the same will happen next year. Even if Cooney is the fourth guard, he'll still get 10+ minutes per game as a "freshman."

It is a little different from Andy, who was recovering from knee reconstruction.

Cooney should still be here when we enter the ACC. I want to see him shoot all over Duke and UNC. SUball

I know it's different from Andy. But just look at what that year "off" did for Andy from a physical standpoint. That's what I'm talking about. A full year practicing against a top 5-10 team, in an elite S&C program...watch out.

Little premature to put Dion in the NBA. Two guards are a dime a dozen.

He will have at least two years in the ACC. ACC fans are going to hate him after a while. Can't wait to see him silence Cameron.

I bet that Cooney spent some time with Andy Rautins and Devendorf that week of Midnight Madness, and that Andy had some very positive words to offer Trevor regarding taking the year to mature and get stronger. Andy wasn't ready as a frosh but became a very solid college player after that year off...and he was injured! Imagine what a healthy TC can accomplish in the weight room, practice, etc, over that same time period. I suspect he will get stronger, quicker, and develop a quicker release on his shot. The redshirt can only be a positive for him.

I wonder if the possibility of redshirting was discussed with him during the recruiting process.

Does anyone else think it's strange he sits closer to the coach then half of the subs who play? I wonder if he aspires to be a coach someday?

I think it's strange that they aren't doing more to be front and center.

He can get in line behind Gerry. When Boeheim retires, Hop will take over. When Hope retires, Gerry will take over. When Gerry retires, Cooney will take over. :D
