If you could be the new "NCAA" what guidelines/rules/standards/etc. would you implement? How would you resolve the various issues in College Sports?
Please do not turn this into a Syracusefan.com poster bashing thread, though Rutgers, PedState, and Georgetown bashing is always allowed. This is a brainstorming thread. I am just curious and would like to see what others think, their creativity, leadership, etc.
A few thoughts off the top of my head:
- All refs are from one pool. Keep the rule that a ref who is a fan of or lives in close proximity to a school (100miles?) may not ref that school's games. Applies to all sports.
- Force all TV contracts to be negotiated as one for each level. They want to operate like the pros, then behave like the pros.
- Force regional conferences with fixed sizes of conferences (i.e. 9-12 schools each). Limit changes
- Require a core of sports each level must support. (Yes, SU, you will need a baseball team).
- Increase the numbers of females scholarships to balance the football scholarships. I.e. Men's lacrosse gets X scholarships while Women's lacrosse gets 2X or 3X scholarships.
- All scholarships must be paid at the private school rate to the school. The state schools are augmented by taxpayers, tax payers should not foot the bill for State schools, take it from the sports revenue.
- The Athletics Department must pay their own way. No Rutgers/UConn situations with permanent losses piling up to never be recovered. No illusory promises of a chest of gold at the end of the rainbow. There will be guidelines limiting how often a school may go into the red with rolling performance measures. This may be referred to s the Rutgers Rule.
- Create a school cap on salaries. Boosters would need to commit to anything above the cap, the school (and state) would only be liable for their portion of a contract. This applies to all coaching staff positions and all sports. NOTE: this would likely suck for high cost of living states and high tax states, such is life.
- Limit staff numbers. A set student positions can be utilized to augment the staff, with a limit on pay to the students, i.e. </= 2X or 3X minimum wage. Like Graduate Assistant coaches plus.
- Players will be paid limited amounts spread over the sports (present system-esque). Sure, football and hoops can get the lions share. All NIL deals must be approved and meet certain measures. Yes, the bags of money will occur, but that will not stop. If caught, the player loses money and scholarship, the school loses scholarships and the coaches lose pay and possibly jobs. Boosters must pay fines to the NCAA and a some definite point, lose access to all college sports.
- Punishments for criminal violations will cost a team dearly, up to and including the death penalty. This can be the PedState/Michgan State Rule.
- Punishments for civil violations will cost lots of money. Further, loss of scholarships will still be paid but to the new "NCAA" for further enforcement.
Please add and discuss.
