Yes. I know, it's hard to believe it's been 15 years since we started our IGGY AWARDS. It's harder to believe that this is the 20th anniversary season of when a young man named Carmelo Anthony first stepped foot on campus. We know our coach's walkup music is the Boss and Glory Days is where we pine to be. The magic question is will we ever get back there again and could another young man help guide us there this year. (COMMITTEE NOTE: We are not asking Judah to lead us to a championship as that is a lot of pressure, but how about a nice winning record and a relative safe seed in the NCAA's. However, the tourney is in Albany and MSG this year, so let's shoot for the moon, and bring JG3 back to Section 2.)
Before we get to the actual categories and predictions, let's have a moment of reflection of our late fanatical member of Syracusefan.com who "graciously" lent his name to these great awards. We know how valued the IGGY AWARD is and the committee wants to posthumously thank IGGY for all the great conversations that he helped generate over the years. He was a true teacher and renaissance man as his attached obituary shows. Thanks IGGY and all of the others we have lost over the years.
This year we will have seven categories and a tiebreaker. All entries must be posted by noon of our first regular season game which this year is on Monday, November 7th vs the Lehigh Mountain Hawks. This gives everyone plenty of time to digest our two exhibition games and time to rehash our football squad and the Yankees.
So, without further ado, here are our categories. Thank you all in your dogged pursuit of winning a 15th ANNUAL IGGY AWARD.
1) ACC RECORD. We are scheduled for 20 regular season conference games
2) OUT OF CONFERENCE RECORD. We are scheduled for 11 out of conference games
3) ACC Tournament RECORD. We could play anywhere from one to five games depending on season and success (or lack thereof).
4) NCAA TOURNAMENT-First four games do not count (or whatever they are calling them this year) so we could play anywhere from one to six games. If you do not think Cuse will make the NCAAT then put 0-0 as your prediction.
5) LEADING SCORER. Please list the player and how many points per game.
6) LEADING REBOUNDER. Please list the player and how many rebounds per game.
7) HOW MANY THREES WILLJOSEPH GIRARD THE THIRD MAKE?
8) TIEBREAKER-Who will lead the team in 3 point shooting this season (same tiebreaker as last year). Will it be one of our rotation guys like JG3, Judah, Quadir, JT or Chris or will it be a walk-on that shoots 1-1 for 100% like happened last year. We just need the player and not the percentage.
Again, thank you all for participating. Those of you who choose not to will lose all posting privileges (positive and negative) during the season. In IGGY"S honor, let's make the 15th ANNUAL IGGY AWARDS the biggest ever.
Here is a recap of last year's categories and winners. Congrats again to all of you and even though the season did not pan out very well, you guys had the foresight and for that you were able to bring home the hardware. Congratulations.
1) ACC record-We are scheduled for 20 ACC regular season games. If by chance that Covid causes any cancellations, then we will revert back to percentage vs record and let the IGGY Committee figure out all the math, but for your official entry please predict your record based on a 20 game ACC season.
We finished with a record of 9-11. No one predicted that, but we did have one lone soul pick 10-10. We knew that some of the categories of 14th ANNUAL IGGY AWARDS were going to challenging so the IGGY COMMITTEE has decided to award the first IGGY of the evening to that person. Congrats to Oakland. Your IGGY is in the mail.
2) Out of Conference record-We have 11 out of conference games. Some of our opponents are unknown due to the format of the B4A, but use your best judgement on how you think Cuse will do in those 11 games.
Our Out of Conference record was 6-5. We had a ton of people predict 7-4 so we knew we were going to lose some games. However, not too many people predicted the Colgate debacle. But we did have two fans (ummm.) who knew we were going to lose five games. Actually, one did and the other predicted what percentage we were going to finish at. He kind of followed directions and neither one did a good job with the tie-breaker, so the IGGY COMMITTEE decided to award split IGGY'S, so congratulations to TrueBlue25 and to Dan7800 for your awards.
3) ACC Tournament-We could play anywhere from one to five games depending on our seed and how we perform.
So, we had a ton of 2-1 predictions. Unfortunately, playing in the 8/9 slot without Jesse and Buddy "the Puncher" Boeheim, hurt our chances to advance. Without a healthy Jesse and Symir, for the games he missed, maybe we could have got to the seven slot. This might have helped us win a second game. But, we faced the #1 seed Duke Blue Devils and in a brilliant show, we had a one point lead with 3:09 remaining. Our guys went zero dark 3:09 and we allowed Duke to win the game. We played well but just another woulda, coulda game in a would, coulda year.
So, we finished the ACC tournament with a record of 1-1. Still had a bunch of predictions for that number. So, we went to Tiebreaker #1. No one even close. So, we had to go to Tiebreaker#2 and that worked. So, the IGGY COMMITTEE is proud to award the next IGGY to Zelda Zonk. Congratulations!!! Side note: All these years, never knew the Zelda Zonk reference, so the committee googled it. Interesting. I always felt a weird kinship with Marilyn as she died the day before my 3rd birthday. And she died a day before Patrick Ewing's birth. Any chance that her soul ended up in Patrick's body. Probably not and it is a really dark subject considering we are celebrating IGGY'S so we will table that for another time.
4) NCAA Tournament-First four games do not count (or whatever they are calling them this year) so we could play anywhere from one to six games. If you do not think Cuse will make the NCAAT then put 0-0 as your prediction.
Speaking of dark, let's talk about the NCAA tournament. Crickets!!! How about the NIT? More crickets. CBI? Jiminy crickets. The IGGY COMMITTEE thought for sure they were going to save some money in this category, but, lo and behold, two people predicted 0-0 in the NCAA's. That blasphemy!!! Last year we made the Sweet Sixteen. And we have a Hall of Famer as a head coach. The 2-3 zone. With Man-to-Man principles. We even played a 3-2 and 1-3-1 and Box and Two. Except for the Diamond and One, the dinosaur broke out all the zone defenses. Unfortunately, he didn't break out the picket fence when we needed to pass the ball inside. Lots of things hurt us, and not withstanding Jesse's season ending injury, failure to get the ball inbounds is what ultimately helped keep us off the bubble.
The IGGY COMMITTEE went back to the tiebreaker. #1-again not close. #2, yes, we have a winner. So, dropping a deuce for the Cuse, the IGGY COMMITTEE is proud (sad?) to award the next IGGY to Jasoncuse. Congrats and hopefully next year you will find a reason for a more positive prediction.
5) Leading scorer per game and how many. Last year we did Buddy vs the field and will do the same this year. Please put down the number and either Buddy or the field as your prediction.
Ok. We had a lot of Buddy predictions. No surprise. The kid is a gamer. Made 1st team ACC. Congrats to Buddy. We had one person pin the tail on the donkey with the correct prediction of 19.2. Congrats to 721Comstock. Great job. Your IGGY is in the mail.
6) Leading rebounder. Player and number. I expect this category to be all over the board.
We knew this category was going to be all over the board. The predictions pretty much fell into place based on the two pre-season game averages. Benny (7.0) Jimmy (6.0) Jesse (5.5) and Cole (5.0), except maybe a few more for Jesse. But, lots of people predicted Benny. Only three predicted Cole who was the winner at 6.7 rebounds per game. So we went to the closest to the pin and the IGGY COMMITTEE is proud to award the next IGGY to Niastri with his prediction of 7.3.
7) Rank of Buddy Boeheim’s made threes in the overall NCAA. If you think he is going to make the 10th amount of threes in the country then you would put 10.
So, technically this category shouldn't be awarded until the last bucket is made in April. However, the IGGY COMMITTEE realized a little late that they never awarded an IGGY last year in this category and are too lazy to award it retroactively. So, if someone wants to be an apprentice IGGY COMMITTEE member and do the heavy lifting, feel free to go back to last year's predictions and results. Let's move forward to this year. The IGGY COMMITTEE made an executive decision to pretend the season ends right now. Buddy is currently 43rd in made threes for the year with a total of 88. JG3 is currently ranked 37th with a total of 89. Some 5'9" dude from Liberty is first with a total of 142 on 39% shooting and averaged almost 25 ppg. I looked him up and he just completed his fourth year. The IGGY COMMITTEE is a little foggy if that means he still eligibility or not, but hopefully he will be in the portal.
Lots of predictions of top ten and top 20. A few people were smarter, or realized that he only made 77 last season, so to finish that high up would be a major accomplishment. We had a few close ones, including one person who predicted that Buddy would rank 44th this year. And since everyone else predicted a higher number, this person will win no matter how many people pass Buddy in the next couple weeks. So the IGGY COMMITTEE is proud to award the next IGGY, and his second of the evening, to 721Comstock. Nice job. It's not easy to win an IGGY, let alone two in one year.
8) TIEBREAKER-Who will lead the team in 3 point shooting this season (same tiebreaker as last year). Will it be one of our rotation guys like Buddy, JG3, Cole, Jimmy or Symir or will it be a walk-on that shoots 1-1 for 100%. We just need the player and not the percentage
Ok. Fun category. We had a lot of people predict Cole and Buddy and JG3. And we had some people predict Paddy Casey, Chazz Owens and Shane Feldman. And it ended up being a walk-on that won with a shooting percentage of 100% (1-1). However, no one picked our winner, so the IGGY COMMITTEE, in an unprecedented move, awards the last IGGY of the year to Arthur Cordes. Congratulations on your brilliant three point shooting. We will mail your IGGY to the Melo Center where hopefully it takes it's rightful place next to that piece of hardware given out in 2003.
