He doubts Dion will be around next year.

He was speaking to Bud & the Manchild today where he was asked this question. Coach we talked with Howard Triche last week and he said, "Brandon doesn't even know how good he is, what do you have to say about that coach, do you feel the same?" JB said I think Brandon knows how good he is but he defers to other players. Next year when he's the point guard and if he's playing along side of Dion, though I highly doubt he'll be here. If he plays with Michael Carter Williams, who is a good passer you'll see Brandon assuming more responsibility in the offense."

They then touched on how our half court offense is percieved as one of the weaknesses of this team. They cited Jay Bilas as one who has said that. JB said while Jay is one of my friends he's not always right. What is a good half court? One which runs the Princeton offense and makes a lot of passes and runs the back door. That's not a very good offense, we could do that too. The last I checked we had one of the best assist to turnover ratio's in the country. How's our field goal %, pretty good!
When we make one pass and it's an ally oop and Fab dunks it, isn't that a good offense.

He also talked about Fab Melo and if he might leave early. Fab is at about 30% if he were to stay he'd be able to maximize his potential and be a 15 & 10 guy. Scoop & Kris are at about 90% of their potential.

I'm sure this is not exact word for word but it is the jist of what he said. Check 1260 the Score later for the Podcast.

No surprise there. Kid already has an NBA frame and NBA skills. Outside of a first round or 2nd round loss.. not sure what else he could do to show the world his skills next year. I have a feeling come tourney time.. Dion will be up near 30 mins a game.

Bah.

I know we've discussed this ad-nausem around here and I don't want to turn this into another 5 page thread about whether or not Dion is ready; but obviously JB knows way more than we do.

Now, whether he'll leave because he's READY or because he WANTS to is a whole different thing.

He isn't ready though...

Name me 3 guards better than Dion Waiters... Hes ready for the NBA, many experts all say he will be better in the NBA and if we make a deep NCAA run hes a lottery pick. Hes gone.

As a fan, expect Dion to be gone, but hope he comes back.

A back court of Triche, Carter-Williams and Cooney has it's upside, though.

Carter-Williams will allow Triche to play of the ball, where I think he is more effective. When Cooney comes in, Triche can slide to the point, where he is clearly experienced and effective. And when Triche sits, Carter-Williams and Cooney can fit together nicely.

The wild card is Mookie. Will he be here, will he play if he is?

This is all a topic for another day, but with or without Dion next year, the beat goes on.

Might be the best shooting backcourt ever at Cuse. Reminds me of a more athletic, bigger version of Rautins/Devo backcourt.

I would think Mookie as a senior with his shooting ability will get some burn next year. MCW/Triche with Cooney as the primary sub, then bring in Mookie to play MCW of this year minutes?

If Fab comes back the inside/ouside game will be sickkkkk. This year we are more dependant on the dribble drive, next year we can throw it down to Fab and DC2, as well as a 2nd year improved Rak, with Triche/MCW/Cooney/Southerland etc to drill it from outside.

Unfortunately, kids make up there mind right about now, well alot of them because they essentially call it quits this semester and quit going to class, etc. Maybe working out more than the other teammates, getting ready for the draft. Combines, etc. I don't know how the kids thet declare even finish the semester regardless.

AT least that have been what I have learned from a few people that would know, ( Not Syracuse people)

I don't understand people saying Dion isn't ready. Look at every NCAA guard narrow it down to your top ten and then compair there all around games to Dion's. Dion is a top 5 guard in college right now. He makes NBA type playes multiple times a game. He will make a lot of money and almost no kid is ever truely ready for the NBA, but he's good enough, he'll get paid and he wants to be the man which is a quality that many guys lack in the NBA.

No wild card. Mookie won't get MCW type minutes. Assume Dion leaves. Frontcourt= Melo, Fair, Rak, Coleman, JSouth, Keita. Backcourt= Triche, MCW, Cooney. Mookie is still 10th man at best. I'd guess Grant sees more time than Mookie.

I would think that Mookie will get his degree (which is something he has stated is why he stuck around) and then take advantage of the one year left of eligibility and not having to sit out a year and play elsewhere.

One disagreement. When it comes to Triche alone and not necessarily how it fits with the team and other options, he is much better with the ball than as a 2 guard.

Completely correct. Many if not most kids that are going pro, bball or fall, bag the semester at some point to prepare for the combines, draft camps etc. They almost have to if they want to maximize their draft potential.

Yea but we still only have 3 guards. Mookie might be the 11th best player but he fits a need...can Mookie dribble though? Yikes, we better hope none of our guards go down.

One funny thing in that podcast was when they talked about coaches being on the court during play, which JB never does. The Manchild asked him if he had ever told one of the players to crash into the coach on purpose to draw a technical. I'd love to see that if the opportunity ever presented itself..

3 guards is all we really need, provided they stay healthy. Lets face it, we have no "need" for MCW to play a single minute this year. If an injury were to happen next year and we only have the 3 guards then I think Mookie might get some pt but we'd also see JSouth get some additional time and possibly even Grant. Not ideal but we could maybe steal 5+ minutes with one of them at the 2. Sounds kinda scary but I think I'd be comfortable with 5th year SR Mookie as out 4th guard. Who knows? We don't seem to be recruiting many guards either.

There are two criteria I judge by to decide whether I agree if a player should leave or not:

1) Will they be a lottery pick?
2) Can they actually succeed in the NBA if they leave now?

Those two conditions are rarely both true, but if either are true then they should leave. Carmelo? Not even a question, easy yes to both 1/2. Donte? No to both, shouldn't have left early. Jonny? Yes to 1, no (personally) to 2... definitely should have left.

I think Dion is a 'yes' to #2 and a 'maybe' to #1 (too early to tell), so IMO i think he should leave and fans should accept that decision.

I think Dion will beast in the NBA. I have high expectations for him. Hes just now getting buzz and hes already ahead of Austin Rivers at 15 according to Chad Ford when he asked multiple NBA execs about Dion's draft spot as of now if he leaves early.

If Boeheim thinks Bilas is wrong about our halfcourt then it shouldn't be a surprise what we're seeing out there. Maybe when we get bounced again from the tourney because of poor/stagnant offense it will be addressed. Hoping it dosn't come to that.

I have taken to calling him Mini-Jordan. If only he were 3 inches taller.
The part of his game that most reminds me of Michael's is the way he pays attention to the defensive side of the game. His growth from freshman to sophomore has been unbelievable, he's really living up to his high school hype. Another nice early JB find.

Wouldn't it be great if CTO could get JB on here one time for a chat so we could make these remarks directly to him. That would certainly increase the traffic on this site!

CTO?

It's been stated many times ... mookie can graduate this year with his degree and go anywhere and play immediately next year ... it was his best option to stick around and gain his freedom in the spring

It's popular to love Mookie but he won't be back.
