...at 11AM, talking aobut passing Adolph Rupp, etc.

He mentioned something about Dion. He was talking about next year's starting lineup and said something to the effect of if Dion comes back, which at this point he has questions about. Sounds to me like he's leaning towards expecting Dion to go to the NBA.

Jim complained to Bud aobut writing about his worst game ever. Bud mentioned Fred Leiws. Jim said he was a great coach but a difficult guy. Bud asked if Lewis had any brush up with Rupp but Jim said he didn't. It was a different era. basketball wasn't covered like it is now. Jim doesn't recall if Rupp wore a brown suit when we played him.

They talked about Coach K, JB and JC eventually becoming the top three coaches in win. JB thinks Bob Huggins will join them, but said it's harder to stay along time at one schoolt han it used to be and these coaches never throught they'd get that many wins.

Bud asked if Andy Rautins will return to play basketball in the US again. Jim thinks his game will improve and he could come back and said Jason Hart did the same thing. "Andy is as good as some guys in the NBA but those guys are in the right spot on the right team. He'll be a good European player and he can make a good living over there- $3-400,000/yr with a good tax situation. You only play 1-2 tiems a week. the games draw good crowds. Andy's in a good town on the Mediterranean so that's not bad."

They talked about Wesley and Jonny. Jonny is behind two guys who are playing great. His hip is still bothering him- he doesn't have his explosiveness. This is the last year of his cotnract and he'll be a free agent next year. They are playing Wes at his natural position- the 3, but he's got to play better. "I think he has NBA talent and I'll think he'll figure it out."

Ricky Rubio didn't score in Spain but he's played surprisingly well in the NBA.

They talked about the Knicks. "I don't think they had a point guard and they don't have a "2". Baron Davis won't be back until Frebruary or March. It's not a Mike Dantoni team on offense and they aren't a good defensive team. Carmelo has to get 35 to even be in the game and that's hard to do every nigfht."

Manchild asked what happened during the offseason to get players like Dion and Melo on the right track. JB: "You'd have to be naive to think we don't talk to them every day. Part of it is eating the right things. Then there's the natural progression from freshman to sophomore. If those guys played like they played last eyar, we'd have the same team as last year. Everybody has improved a little but the improvement in Fab and Dion is the reason we're a better team."

He said Jay Bilas is a friend of his "but he's not right everytime all the time." He said most people think that good halfcourt offense is like Princeton and we could run it but that's not a good offesne. What I think good offense is: if you don't have to pass the ball once and get a good shot, that's good. if you make a pass and get a good shot that's good too. It's how many good shots you get and how few turnovers you get and we are leading the country in the fewest turnovers and we shoot a high percentage. We don't score as much in transition as people think. Good teams won't let you run. We really didn't run vs. NC State and Providence but shot 58-60%. We average about 80 points and get about 15 a game from transtion. We are better at scoring in transition than in the halfcourt but that's like saying Tom Brady passes the ball better than he runs it."

Jim thinks we will be underdogs at Connecticut and Lousiville. Notre Dame will be a close game. Cincinanti is 4-1 in the cofnerecne and Rutgers has beaten a number of ranked teams. "We will be close to underdogs in 3-4 games."

Howie Triche told them that "brandon doesn't realize whow good he is". Jim said he told him the same thing but he think Brandon realizes what eh can do. He thinks Brandon will put pretty substanital numbers up next year with Michael Carter- Willaims at the point because he's a great passer. (That made it sound like he doesn't expect Dion to be part of the pticure next eayr. I would have projected brandon to be the starting point and Dion at the '2'.)

They discussed Fab Melo. "If he stays another year he'll make a bigger jump and average about 15ppg. He's playing at 30-40% of what he can do. Most guys are at 90%. But he's a huge factor in each game. Dion would be averaging 30 points a game if he played the whole game."

He thinks Baye needs to get stronger- he doesn't eat enough. Rakeem Christmas is improving, even if it doesn't always show in the numbers. But they are still works in progress.

They asked about the process of moving to the ACC. Jim expects to be in the Big East next year but doubts it will be beyond that because the new schools will come in the next year.

Bud asked aobut coaches coaching on the floor. JB says the rules aren't enforcing it. He wants it's enforced. He says it's a disadvantage but he would rpefer they enforce rules about grabbing under the basket. "The NBA calls more fouls than we do and it should be the other way around." Jim avoids confrontaitonas with the other coach. Bud wants Scoop to run the opposing coach over and force a technical. Jim laughed and said they are normally on the court when the action is on the opposite end of the court.

Jim likes his pal Tom Coughlin to beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl again.

Great summary. Thanks. Love his comments on misconceptions about SU's offense.
