ND had the game winning goal waived off ... because a player lost a shoe.

Headed to OT.

Tough loss for the Irish giving up 6 unanswered. Now they gotta play UNC in a couple days.

Terribly officiated game. In addition to the lost shoe, they missed a push on the ND broken clear that should have at least given them the ball. Was Duke paying Cotter and Quint's salaries tonight? If not, ESPN should send them a bill.

Why is the lost shoe terrible officiating? The rule states that play must be stopped if a player loses their shoe. Kavanaugh, the ball carrier, lost his shoe dodging well before shooting. The ref immediately noticed, blew the whistle, & stopped play before rewarding the ball back to ND. Question the rule if you want, but it was officiated perfectly.

I agree with you on the missed push.

I wonder, is Lax the only sport where play is stopped by officials when a player loses their footwear? Somewhere, Tyler Lydon & Donovan McNabb were shaking their heads.

One takeaway from the game is that Wycoff really did not do a horrible job on Kavanaugh. He was burning longpoles left and right. To hold him to only a couple opportunities 1 v 1, where he only scored on poor angle shots, is impressive. Him and Dobson are unfortunately long term problems, but they should have a lot of gaps to fill on defense next year, along with Yorke, Gallagher, and our good friend Lipka who had a nice game.

As for the shoe call it is just like our glove call. The correct call, but the most horrible luck imaginable.

duke has now won 2 games arguably on equipment. definitely this one. great comeback and nd choked it up, but they continue to have lucky charms up their a**. uva rode that to the title and this stuff often happens when the team with bad luck doesn't make plays they need to. and the lucky team capitalizes.

It seems like strict interpretation of the rule, if it exists. How many guys chew on their mouthpiece instead of wearing them correctly? Or how many defenders wear their elbow pads above the elbow so it's merely decorative and to conform with the requirements while not serving the intended purpose?

Plus, the lack of a shoe is harming the goal-scorer. He did not gain any advantage by not having his cleat and was hampered by it, so it should have been a play-on situation.

I looked for the rule and didn't immediately see it. The rule may well exist, but the rulebook has other examples that suggests it could have been slow-whistled and counted as a goal.

A.R. 101. In a scrimmage area, B1 breaks their crosse or loses a piece of required equipment and continues to play A1. RULING: A flag is dropped—slow whistle. However, if B1’s play creates a dangerous situation, then play is stopped. Technical foul against B1.

A.R. 31. A1 scores a goal. Before the faceoff, it is noticed that A1 is not wearing a piece of required equipment (e.g., shoulder pads and/or arm pads). RULING: The goal counts. A1 is assessed a one-minute nonreleasable personal foul.

A.R. 32. A1 scores a goal. Before the faceoff, it is noticed that: (1) A1 was not wearing a mouthpiece; (2) A1 was not wearing a legal uniform; (3) A1 was not wearing legal shoulder pads, arm pads, gloves or helmet. RULING: In (1) and (2), the goal counts, the game restarts with the ball awarded to Team B at the center line; in (3), the goal counts, and A1 serves a one-minute nonreleasable personal foul penalty. The game will restart with Team B in possession.

Feel similarly about the UVA vs MD game as I do this one. Yes it was a crazy play that lead to ND/MD losing those games, but... maybe don't completely choke and give up a ton of goals at the end of the 4th and then you can handle a crazy play happening?

Agreed. The Irish had several opportunities to extend their lead beyond 12. They had 2 30 second emo's that they didn't convert--one, Kavanaugh shot the ball into Adler's chest when he had time to pick his spot. The other ended when the Irish didn't back up a shot--inexcusable on emo. In fact, the Irish lost possession a few times by getting beat to the end line. Props to Duke for fighting to the end.

Syracuse at Virginia, 1 p.m. on ESPN2
This game was moved from The U to The Deuce. While Notre Dame vs. North Carolina (2 p.m. Sunday) is likely a more intriguing battle — and the second in four days for the Irish — a lot of eyes will be on the Orange. Perennially the most talked-about team in lacrosse, there’s a brighter spotlight on the Orange due to the team’s high expectations and goals, combined with their recent disappointing stretch, the suspension of Chase Scanlan, and now an injury to Jacob Buttermore. Syracuse would be wise to make a strong impression on the Selection Committee these next two weeks.

Surprised we haven’t heard something from Duke or the NCAA on this yet. Seems like something the institutions would be wary of.

Is this a Bitcoin thing?

Maryland looking like the varsity to Hopkins’ JV.

Their offense is dominating early.

Bernhardt is a nightmare, if SU got Maryland I'm bumping Kennedy and letting him mark him and slow to slide.

not sure shoe is considered part of equipment.. in bball they keep playing in fball they keep playing.. in soccer the blade falls off they keep playing.. protective stuff they dont even stop play in some sports.. hockey guy puts it on or leaves the ice play doesnt stop.. baseball they dont stop playing at all.
moutpiece, pads. helmet i get.. shoe i dont think should stop play.
