in terms of quality of stream and quality of picture?

It's usually a little more reliable connection, but it's also smaller, has no ability to show multiple games at once (to my knowledge), and I've found it's usually delayed by 20-30 seconds. I'd also try running a speedtest (e.g. speedtest.net) on both your tablet and your PC to see if there are any noticeable differences in the connection. A computer that is bogged down with spyware or the like could cause the internet connection to lag.

Are you asking about the difference between the app and the web interfaces?

The app on appropriate devices allows you to watch the content on a regular TV. This is typically preferred over watching it via a browser.

On handheld devices there really is no choice. The app works well.

My experience is limited to iOS devices (AppleTV, iPhone & iPad). I would expect other devices (Roku, XBox) to provide similar experiences.

I'm talking about espn3 via my laptop vs. WatchESPN via a roku/apple tv

I love it on all my devices! Just as long as I'm on a wifi connection because both can get choppy at times. I prefer to watch it on my Xbox because I can watch it on my 50" tv but I guess you can get the adapter that connects your iPad/iPhone

its the same thing all over isnt it? its just rebranded. espn3 on a computer becomes espn.go/watchespn.

they all work as a function of the internet connection you have and how busy the signal is. a 3mb dsl can look the same as a 60MB trunc line.. but having fios doesnt mean it will always look good. they still have to get the feed from the location to the internet someplace..

If you want to watch the content on a normal TV then WatchESPN on any of the devices would be preferred over a laptop.

Hint: use the laptop for SyracuseFan.com chatroom discussion instead. :)

Picture quality is always 1080p for me with Apple TV, the only issue is you can't really follow along on twitter or text people during the game as it's 20-30 seconds behind. I prefer it to the crapshoot that is streaming it on my laptop though.

thanks all for the feeback…
Another, related, question: will I have access to espn3 if I only have internet (not cable) through Comcast?

Yup, if you have ESPN3 access via your provider now, then you'll also have it via the WatchESPN app on the various devices.

If you don't subscribe to ESPN on your cable you will not get ESPN3 "cable games". That is anything that's being shown on ESPN, ESPN2, or ESPNU. When you are just subscribed to internet you will only get things that are ONLY shown on ESPN3. They force you to subscribe to their high level TV package that gets ESPN in order to get the rest.

You are free to watch ALL replays though no matter what channel those were on even without ESPN subscription.

I'm boycotting cable until they allow a-la-carte selections, so I have to illegal stream any non-ESPN3 games even though I have Comcast and get basic ESPN3 access.

I live in Florida and sometimes Syracuse games are not televised by my cable company but are available on ESPN3 or ESPNU. I merely hook my laptop up to my 55" LG smart TV with the HDMI cable and watch it that way. There is no appreciable difference from watching it on the TV.

I'm in a hotel in Pasadena. Slowish internet connection. Saturday may be torture for me to watch. Does anyone know if it is a full court game? Then I could go to a sports bar to watch.

Yes, the game is on Full Court.

I have used it both ways - laptop with hdmi cables to flat screen TV or IPAD with apple TV streaming to flat screen and the picture is better with the IPAD and Apple TV.

Is the picture quality using a Roku3 connected to a flat screen better than the picture you get on your PC browser? If yes, then I would invest in the Roku. Anyone have any experience with this?

I like watching on an IPAD better. I don't think you can pause when watching on ESPN3, though I may be wrong about that. Watching on an IPAD I can easily pause, and just stream it to my TV through an IPAD to HDMI cable.

Not to be too nit picky, but they don't broadcast it in 1080p. Actually no one broadcasts anything in 1080p except maybe for PPV movies.

whatever the highest quality is then. all i know is it looks like i'm watching on the HD channel when I had cable.

Yes. I just got a Roku and the quality has been tremendous. Watched the bowl game replay the other day and some live games, both were great.

I never really understood what Roku and Apple TV do. I have directv currently. Does Roku do anything differently than what a laptop connected to my lcd would do? Also, Roku wouldn't enable me to watch epsn 3 would it? I don't get access to espn 3 because I only have time warner internet which is not a subscriber.

Roku just helps you avoid having to connect/disonnect a laptop every time. It's a streaming appliance. It doesn't do anything else though (your laptop does a lot of other things). Not any different from a laptop, just more convenient since you'll just hook it up to TV and leave it there.

If you are not subscribed to ESPN from you cable company you will not get ESPN games on ESPN3 regardless of what you use. Hint: just share a login with a relative/friend as long as they are on the same cable provider.

That's exactly what I've been saying in all of these threads during the last few years. ESPN3 access is tied to your Internet Service Provider. He other channels are tied to your Video Service Provider.

In this case he was asking about ESPN3 access. If his Internet Service Provider gets him access to ESPN3 then the WatchESPN app will also provide him access to ESPN3.

Nice to know that you steal services from ESPN.

Llandz, if you do go to the bar to watch the game... remember, watch out for "Little Old Ladies" while in Pasadena. ;)
