Jim Boeheim, on his radio show, asked me to determine how many local kids he’s had on his teams over the years. I decided to define ‘local’ as Section III but made a separate list of “upstate” players who didn’t come from Section III. I defined “upstate” as Albany to Buffalo, along with the Southern Tier and the North Country. The Hudson, New York City and Long Island are ‘downstate’ to me. I’ll have separate lists of ‘recruited players’, (walk-ons are occasionally given available scholarships), and walk-ons.

Here are the sources I used for the project:
For rosters: Syracuse Orange Basketball Season Records
For Players: All Time Syracuse Orange Basketball Player List
For Section III schools: 19-20 Boys Hoops leagues (PDF) - The Official Website of Section III Athletics
And Wikipedia to locate schools outside of Section III.

Lydon isn’t from update NY?

I get that he’s from just south of Albany -
Hudson, in Columbia County -
but for the majority of NY residents, that’d be considered “upstate”

His HS is in the absolute northernmost part of Dutchess County.

Guess ya gotta draw the lines somewhere.

And I dunno, but -
I’d consider Jonny & Paul amongst the ‘local’ kids we’ve gotten.

That seems like "downstate" to me. JB's term was "local kids". Would you consider Pine Plains 'local'?

Nice work as always!

Minor detail. Gorman and Watertown were Section 3.

Does the fact that the Otto-Man Empire crosses vast stretches of land affect the term "local"?

NYC folks call anything north of Westchester, “upstate”. They don’t get out of the city much.
In college I had a roommate from "the city" and he considered anything north of Poughkeepsie upstate. For him traveling from Rochester to Buffalo or Syracuse a commuter ride.

I was in booth hall at SU when i was there. I remember one Saturday standing in the lobby of our floor with a nice view of Syracuse New York in front of me. A friend from NYC asked what I was going to spend the day doing. I told him i was thinking of going down to the city. His reply: "Oh, what flight are you taking?"

Maybe he was referring to flights of stairs. ;)

I almost came to blows with a WF fan for referring to Buffalo/Western NY as Upstate. He was so adamant that WNYer’s are so proud of where they come from that referring to them simply as from Upstate NY was offensive.

I told him he was a clown.

Hence, almost getting after it. Dumbest fight I’ve ever engaged in.

And he was from Buffalo and a WF fan, so he definitely is a clown.

I'm impressed you met an actual WF fan.

It's true. Buffalo thinks of itself as Western NY, not upstate NY.
The interesting case is Rochester, which sits on the line between western NY and central NY. What are they?
(They once had a Sunday paper magazine insert that was titled "Upstate").

It’s actually true though, they don’t like being called upstaters here.

Buffalo feels much more midwest than NY to me.

So does Syracuse. There was at one time an idea of having 'Upstate' break off from downstate the way West Virginia broke off from Virginia. If we did, we'd be considered part of, (and the beginning of), the Midwest, like Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, etc. rather than the East Coast.

The opposite of 'Upstate' is 'Downstate.
The opposite of 'Western' is 'Eastern'.
'Western' is not the opposite of 'Downstate'.
