I'd expect a couple of the 5th year guys to use that season elsewhere. I would also expect a couple of transfers this off-season in and out. Not aware of any big name losses at this point.

One thing I wonder about is will the team utilize the transfer portal (outside of FOGO obviously)? I respected Gait's decision to not go that route this past offseason and see what he had but clearly he underestimated the roster. I'm not saying picking up someone like Doneville or Murphy would have made us contenders this season but they def could have helped.

Yes but they will be picky

Xtreme, go ahead and put 22 next to Spallina’s name.

Attack will be improved with the return of Hiltz and addition of Spallina but hard to see another area that's going to improve immediately. Some promising freshmen on defense and at midfield but it's asking a lot for them all to contribute in year one. I think you're looking at another meh season in 2023 (especially if they can't land a top FOGO in the transfer market) before things start to look better in 2024.

Defense has the chance to be better. While SU does lose Kennedy and Murphy, it brings back all of the relevant SSDM's, both LSM's and brings in two top end close defenders in Dwan and Figueiras. Kennedy is a massive loss but Caccamo has the skills to be a #1 close defender and LSM should be a massive strength with Olexxo and Clary back and an frosh Sageder. Goalie is still a mystery so if McCool isn't the answer their then all bets could be off if Gavin doesn't take another step forward.

For FOGO I fully expect SU to bring in a transfer if not 2, depth is already an issue and clearly the two current backups aren't exactly lighting things up in practice. Likely take a step back there with Phaup graduating but perhaps more depth depending on who we bring in and if Gibbs the frosh FOGO can bring anything to the table.

Offensively I think the team can be more consistent but Curry will be missed big time. Midfield is a complete unknown right now as you noted. I think its likely Dordevic moves back to midfield at least technically as it make sense with Spallina and Hiltz locked in to start. I would assume at least of one of Corsi, Birtwistle or Cordes will join him on the 1st line. Kempney seems like a potential 2nd line guy. Rhoa has been impressive as hell so far this year so perhaps he battles for a 1st line spot. It also seems likely Finlay Thompson plays a role at attack or midfield, he's blown up the past year and was named a 5 star this fall. Also certainly possible SU goes after a Grad transfer mid fielder type if one is in the portal who can bridge the gap to the young guys.

Offense by the later part of next season could be a very potent unit, the pieces seem to be there

Expect Frattegerio to be a starting close defender next year with back line filled out by one of the highly ranked d recruits or maybe Kol who is in his third year and already familar with Petro's schemes. Big plus to have best 3 dm's return as well as some recruits targeted for that position such as Levine n Rhoa. See Page and Drago being capable of competing as backups at lsm. Improvement on def end will be intertwined with the growth of goalies. Believe that goalies on roster are capable but did underestimate of having first year starter without much prior game experience. Expect offense to run smoother as return of Hiltz ( a devastating loss that cost some games ) and addition of Spallina will provide O with two orchestrators that will enhance ball movement and the looks of others , seen that Cordes, Corsi , Birtwhistle, Magnan can be contributors , also rs such as Borges, White n injured F Kelly all have potential then add in Leo, Kempner , F Thompson and there is plenty of o talent and little opportunity for any insulting deflections again. As far as portal, obvious need is to "acquire" a top fogo or two and mid unit could use a vet to anchor if Tucker stays at attack.

Re: Rhoa, are you confusing him with Trujillo? From what I've seen, Rhoa as a DM is a colossal waste of talent.

Thanks IT. I hope they go young with the defense and let them take their lumps. The worry there of course is that Petros defense is just too much for them to absorb in year one. I was not very impressed with Frattegio this season and I think we would just end up with the same frustrations as we had this year. Of course a lot can change once the young kids get on campus. I was pleasantly surprised by Olexo at LSM, that came out of nowhere.

SU needs better play from their short sticks. Trujillo from St Johns is billed as the best in class, but he is a bit undersized. Mercado comes in as a SSDM as well. Of course we all thought Levine was that as well and he only plays man up.

The defense is just not very good this year, especially when it comes to advanced metrics. Petro needs to spend a lot of time self analyzing. His approach in the later years of his Hopkins stay wasn’t good and so far it’s not good at Syracuse.

Will be an interesting balancing act of playing more “seasoned guys” with game time experience Vs. very promising young talent / incoming class.

Hope we don’t get caught in the middle where we aren’t really getting further by over playing current roster based on tenure /experience alone…beyond those who have really proven potential (Corsi , Cordes ,Birt etc ).

Guys like Fiorini, Magnan, Berk , Cook - while they can move the ball to the next guy , haven’t shown that they are going to advance the caliber of the program ..

I’d rather see us bite the bullet and give more minutes to the young /incoming offensive talent who are ready and get them battle tested for bigger future runs ..same for D which I am hoping is some Combo of Concammo with Dwan , Fig , Vincent etc

My prediction is Simmons retires and Casey Powell comes in to help developer talent.
(This is just a guess..lol..I am in no way a guru or have inside info)
But it would be nice to have a talent like Powell on the sideline

Powell lives and operates his business in Florida and I can absolutely assure you he is not moving to western NY to be a DOLO

He's from NYC.

To him, everything north of Yonkers is "Upstate".
I know.

Just thought he might want to sound more intelligent about the region If he’s going to post about Syracuse on a Syracuse lacrosse board.

you going to keep crying about this or are we good to move on?
