Maryland: Durkin Fired

Gotcha. Still...I don't understand why these kids can't constantly be able to drink water and get breaks.

This may also expedite the Dome into getting air conditioning, some opposing team comes in and it's 90 outside, that Dome is hell. This could be a lawsuit waiting to happen.
Constantly would be a bit much and could squander the time the NCAA alots them if players abused it. Having said that, there is plenty of time allowed to schedule adequate cool down and hydration breaks and certified strength and conditioning specialists and athletic trainers at any level, and certainly at the D1 level, should have a thorough understanding of what is appropriate and how to observe the signs of physical distress. From what has been reported, this guy wasn't borderline, he was in rough shape.

Most, if not all, of your head athletic trainers at this level are also licensed physical therapists. If that guy escapes some sort of prosecution, I would think he just put his licensure as a healthcare professional in jeopardy, at the least.

I think a lot of this garbage has been getting phased out of the game. Luckily, it seems like a lot of the younger, new school, HC's take more of a "player's coach" approach. Unfortunately, there are still some old school meatheads like Durkin who need to be weeded out. I never understood how these coaches think this approach works. The best team are usually those where the players want to win and lay it all on the line for their HC. This stuff is small minded, egotistical, nonsense. I realize they need to do an investigation, but can this loser already. There is no way he can recover from this.

I think the Shafer mystery has just been solved.

U think he got a nudge from someone who told him that Durkin is a loony. I still wonder how Harbough fits in here since he coached them all.

I mean at some point if Scott wants a job again he will prob have to come clean on why he abandoned ship.

I’m sure he would to the university hiring him. He would have no need to share it publicly.

Sorry for being unclear but by constantly having water there and when they get 10 or 15 seconds of down time to hit the aqua. Thanks for the response and I agree they should always be on top of this especially when it's hot and/or humid.

a public university is gonna want to know everything and anything and will not hide from facts if he was to work for a big school now. Scott will have to be very clear with the media on why he got cold feet. The omerta in college football coaching circles seems to be closing.

He could explain it as simply a difference in coaching philosophy and that he was not there long enough to have seen evidence of what is now public knowledge.

Overstating both the importance of this little thing and Shafer’s chances as a HC if a large public university, imo

Agree. Guess I don't think it will be that hard for him to explain/

WMU has been using RFID chips for the past few years.
Thanks bcubs... Seems like a no brainier, (if you want to avoid medical emergencies).
What do they monitor?

I only know of one thing; speed/acceleration. There are others, but never asked.

So they spend the $$ for performance monitoring. Gotta think monitoring for a medical emergency would be fairly simple . If that's the case, any heat exhaustion incident rests souly on the school. 100 percent preventable.

Quite the quote, and as it should be. Football is fun, it is great to watch and play, but few will make a living from and it is the true mission of any school to educate the next generation.

Best way to get your players to play hard: get them to genuinely like you. Babers seems to personify that very well.

Amen, the meathead 2 a days approach is long gone. Bear Bryant wouldn't last today. These players train in the off season and are ready to go come camp. Pushing a kid in the heat with reps and punishment in the heat is meathead coaching.

The most shocking part to me is that it's so bad, current players are reaching out to the media to talk about it. Football programs are like Fort Knox - reporters aren't going to reach out to players without going through the SID. Someone reached out to ESPN to complain. That just doesn't happen.

With social media, the media members can reach out to kids much easier nowadays. It's a two way street and the kids could absolutely be going to the media directly... but I'd bet ESPN reached out to kids through social channels to get scoops.

Syracuse "asks" media members not to reach out to players directly via social media or other means. I'd be shocked if Maryland was any different.

It's an unwritten rule - go through the SID or there's hell to pay.
