Maybe it hasn't changed but...

Commercial breaks run about 3 minutes each according to the paddle held by the timeout ref.

Networks get paid when they air commercials for sponsors.

Conferences get paid by the networks.

Schools (athletic departments) get paid by the conferences

Athletic departments pay coaches (in all sports) and develop athletic department resources with this money.

If the cost per 30 second commercial is capped out, yet the networks need to generate more income, they will air more commercials.

Cut the pointless pregame and halftime show and run commercials instead and get a bunch of them out of the way right then and there. Can do 15 minutes of commercials at halftime, and then run fewer of them during the game!

The point is to force people to watch them. An expected 15 minute block of commercials isn’t going to hold many eyeballs. That’s why sports command such a premium now - people watch live.

Or do like soccer does - air commercials on a box around the game.
I hate that. I don't watch soccer, but I've seen it with basketball games. I would rather just have a commercial, especially with the beauty of DVR to just fast forward through them.

It’s painful how disruptive the game is to watch live with the TV timeouts. If they did a split screen with commercials and the live game action, a game would have to be 30-45 minutes shorter. You wonder if that would help attendance some. Major League Baseball is going to a pitch clock next year to address the issue of games being too long.

It’s just as god awful to be in the dome and have to sit on those hard seats for TWO MINUTES FORTY SECONDS and then try to remember where the game was going before the friggin commercial.

I watched the paddle. Some breaks were 3 mins 50 sec. I record virtually all the games I watch. I wonder if the show X minutes of commercials irrespective of injuries, reviews and scoring. Is it a constant number or is it manipulated/determined by events/breaks?
Really deflates the drama.

The dome needs to come up with some new cheap live entertainment during these commercial breaks. Idk but most of us aren’t socially capable of carrying a conversation for 4 minutes and the Wi-Fi still sucks.

Maybe string up some zip lines and let fans take a ride across the 300s.

Give it a little more time and we will have players doing live commercials on the field between plays….

Sounds like we need go bring in Jackie Moon. He can choreograph commercials.

This is the devil you have to deal with if you want SU and the ACC to get Millions from TV. The more money they pay the more commercials and the like, the cost of doing business.

I guess.

Seems like sports were more fun to watch when the TV thing didn't drag everything else down...and I don't remember the fanbase wishing and hoping that the league and the school had millions more in revenue to play with.

The goal wouldn't be to eliminate commercials all together, just reduce them and introduce some limited on screen promotions to balance the time element to take a game from close to 4 hours to closer to a legit 3 hours.

The only reason we want more is because everyone else in Big 12 and SEC is rolling money, I'd still like to see college football take an appropriate role in college athletics and not be all about the dollar bill at all costs, including never ending, and too much in game commercial time making games 4+ hours long. Maybe a pipe dream but I can hope and express that frustration.

Yup. This is a good example of how ridiculous it is from a fan/consumer perspective.

Isn't the game unpleasant to watch? Why? Commercials.

Why are there commercials? Need more money.

Why do they need more money? To provide the best product possible.

But isn't the product worse, since we're complaining about how brutal it is to sit through commercials? Yeah, but...money.
