He doesn't need to "play the point".
He can be a fine playmaker from the 3, like he is already doing.

That's the biggest difference between Eli & Tyus - Ty wasn't a natural playmaker, whereas Eli seems to have a good knack for it.
And given the double-teams he's likely to see at times, him being able to find the open guy will make him twice as dangerous.

To answer the question - yes, to a certain degree. Is it something to be done consistently and am I in favour of it - no.

I can understand hoping he could be like gbinije when i have so little faith in the guy whose job it is to lose
