ORANGE JUMPS INTO TOP FIVE IN TOPDRAWERSOCCER.COM POLL
With two more shutouts, including a 1-0 defeat of second-ranked Virginia on Sept. 27, the Orange vaulted from No. 18 to No. 5 in the latest TopDrawerSoccer.com Top 25 poll, released Monday. It's the highest ranking ever for the Orange in that particular poll. In addition, the Orange climbed four spots (from No. 20 to No. 16) in this week's College Soccer News Top 30 rankings.

'CUSE GRABBING NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT
Following its victory over the Cavaliers, Syracuse was featured in the Sept. 29 edition of Soccer America's College Soccer Reporter daily update. The publication praised the Orange for its emergence as a "national contender."

MURRELL + EKBLOM = GOAL
The combination of defender Jordan Murrell and forward Emil Ekblom has been a productive one for the Orange this season. Three of Murrell's team-leading four assists have come on Ekblom tallies, all of which have been game-winners. The duo combined for the deciding goal versus St. Mary's, Clemson and Binghamton.

THOMAS, BUESCHER FIND SCORING COLUMN
Skylar Thomas and Julian Buescher picked a perfect time to record their first points of the 2014 season. The two linked up in the 31st minute for the only goal in SU's 1-0 victory against No. 2 Virginia on Sept. 27 when Thomas headed home Buescher's corner-kick service. The assist was Buescher's first career point.

BONO'S STREAKING AGAIN
Junior keeper Alex Bono started 2014 with the second-longest shutout streak in school history at 434:05 without conceding a goal. Now Bono and the Orange defense are at it again. Bono has a current stretch of 375:55 in which he has not been scored upon. It dates back to the second half of the Notre Dame match on Sept. 13.

THEY SAID IT
"We've been working on that all week, all year actually, probably my whole college career … working on crossing and finishing and hopefully I finally got it down."

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - For the second week in a row, men's and women's soccer have swept the SU Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards. Alex Bono, a Broadcast and Digital Journalism major of the men's team and Maya Pitts, Communications and Rhetorical Studies major of the women's team are the honorees.

Bono and the men's soccer team are riding a four-game winning streak into their match with Colgate tomorrow, September 30 at 7:00 PM at the SU Soccer Stadium. The team is coming off yet another shutout victory led by Bono. The men's squad defeated No. 2 Virginia on Saturday by a narrow, 1-0 margin.

The goal keeper has recorded shutouts in each of the team's eight victories this season. The only goal Bono has allowed this season came in a 1-0 loss against then No. 1 Notre Dame. The Baldwinsville, N.J., native has a 97% save percentage with 34 saves on 74 shots faced in 810 minutes this season.

Pitts and the women's team split their games last week with a 1-0 win over Miami and a 1-0 loss to Pittsburgh. On Saturday, October 4 the women's squad competes in its only game this week against Boston College at 7:00 PM in the SU Soccer Stadium.

The forward's two goals this season ranks her third on the team and she leads SU in assists with three in 2014. Pitts has tested opposing keepers on 65% on her shots in 12 games this season. She's earned starts in eight of those contests.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Syracuse senior defender Skylar Thomas has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week after leading the Orange to two wins last week.
Thomas scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over No. 2 Virginia on Sept. 27 and anchored an Orange defense that posted two more shutouts last week, raising its NCAA-leading season total to eight clean sheets.
Against the Cavaliers, Thomas finished a corner kick service with a well-timed header in the 31st minute to lift the Orange to its first win against a top-five opponent since 2000. The goal was Thomas' first of the season and the second game-winner of his career. He played the full 90 minutes in the match and was a force in the defensive third as well, helping hold Virginia to four shots on goal and routinely clearing away Cavalier crosses before they could lead to serious scoring chances.
The Pickering, Ontario, native also played all 90 minutes in Syracuse's 1-0 victory at Binghamton on Sept. 23. He organized a back line that limited the Bearcats to five shots in the contest.
