I posted this to our Delaware Liberal blog this morning. You, uh, don't have to be a liberal to enjoy the music. I have even added a Spotify list.

If I might be afforded a fleeting moment of immodesty, I believe that this may well be the coolest best-of list that was made by a 68-year-old white guy all year!!

Share with all your music-loving friends and help it go viral! Oh, and if you can help me figure out how to monetize this, I wouldn't object. I'm not getting any younger, you know.

Happy New Decade:

“Alex, I’ll take 100 songs I’ve either never heard or can’t stand for $400.”

Hmmm, let's see. I posted the list at 9:54. You posted your response at 10:19.

Meaning that, either you listened to at least a snippet of each of the 100 songs in 25 minutes, or you just wanted to write a wise-ass response.

Classy move, my friend.

BTW, for those of you who aren't into dismissing something as out-of-hand, I can guarantee you that you will like some songs on the list and you won't like some songs on the list. I just hope that you get to hear something good that you never heard before.

Oh relax. I’m just kidding around. If I made my list, you’d have the same reaction. I guess that’s the beauty of it all. There’s something for everyone out there.

Huh. I was just expecting covers of Pete Seeger tunes.

Going from the names/titles, I’d heard 2 of the top 20(Tribe, and Cee-Lo). Possible Ive heard a few more but just didn’t recognize the name/title.

It’s interesting how personalized and fractured the listening market is. I don’t think we’ll ever see the smash hit songs and especially albums that were just so universal that everybody knew them, ever again. There’s so much music out there that’s easily available to listen to, that everybody can just easily do their own thing and discover what they want to discover on their own time.

I think you're right. It's also b/c the available music is so much more diverse in terms of styles, not to mention cultures. While I tried to feature a lot of different genres in the list, there's stuff I just can't wrap my head around, so it's not on the list.

But hey, I'm a 68-year-old white guy. I do my best.

BTW, had I done such a list ten years ago, which I didn't, the biggest change to this decade's list would have been the emergence of an especially strong and diverse group of female artists. There aren't just a whole lot of them on the list, they are among the most important artists of the decade--Brittany Howard, Hurray For The Riff Raff, Kacey Musgraves and Phoebe Bridgers, to name but a few.

I've heard around half of the top 20 by name.....and some seem to pretty mainstream for people to miss. Hold On? C'mon, OrangeDW!

And I almost exclusively listen to hip-hop in my own time. You people need to listen to more music.

I don't like some of your choices. Be better next decade! :)

Regardless, interesting list. How do you end up listening to some of this as a 68 year old white guy? Escorts?? Am I right?

Just listened to it. Nope, lol. Don’t recall ever hearing that one before.

Okay....I feel like that one reached the point where it was playing in stores.

One of my hobbies is that, as a volunteer, I book and produce concerts at a venue here in Delaware. And, I've always been a bit music-obsessed. I try to listen to new stuff on sites like Paste, Pitchfork, American Songwriter, Blues Blast, NPR, WXPN and the like. I also listen to music from artists who are associated with some of the booking agencies I work with. I prefer 'boutique' agencies to the huge ones. At year's end, I check out as many Best-Of lists as I can to hear what I might have missed.

I have some hip-hop and a little bit of rap on the list, but I admit that someone who wasn't a 68 year-old white guy would have more.

Who TF has time to listen to 100 songs

I've heard of like 5 of those 20 by name, the only one I've actually listened to was Tribe.

the original OED took nearly 40 years to compile. ICE ICE BABY merely 40 minutes to steal and compose. yet it shall remain a classic throughout the realm of audio history. Feasible rhymes that you can vision and feel...

Deadly, when I play a dope melody
Anything less than the best is a felony
Love it or leave it, You better gain way
You better hit bull's eye, The kid don't play
If there was a problem, Yo, I'll solve it
Check out the hook while my DJ revolves it

these lines talk to our souls
killing your brain like a poisonous mushroom
word to your mutha...

I do! I'll probably listen to a little bit of each to see if something resonates and go on one of my Spotify lists - it's a pretty interesting list judging from the Top 20.

Valentino originals would be on my list.

Never heard him before, but digging this Jason Isbell tune.

Love that M83 song as well. I know a bunch of these. Saw the Meat Sweats up here last summer or the summer before.

You'd love a couple of the radio stations up here. They fit your mood perfectly. Not the Hip Hop, but most of the rest.

Love that Chance tune as well. My kid got me listening to him.

We're lucky down here in the Philly area. We have WXPN, which is perhaps the most influential Triple A radio station in the country. While I dig up a lot of this stuff on my own, XPN champions up-and-coming artists, which, to name just two, Jason Isbell and Lake Street Dive once were.

Nice. We've got 104.7, the Point, which is awesome because they have different frequencies throughout the state, so you can listen when you are driving over hill and dale. We've got another newer station, 102.9, Farm Fresh Radio - All NEW MUSIC - fewer commercials! | Farm Fresh Radio - that plays a bunch of new stuff as well. The Point also plays the eTown show.
