This is my guess at what the depth chart will look like when the season starts in September...

With the WRs moving all around, who the heck knows where a number of the youngsters will end up.

The linebackers are tough to call too; seems like there are people being moved around a lot and there is still some uncertainty with Shy.

But this is what I think for now.

Looking at the chart, we don't have a really strong junior class, especially on defense. We might take a step back in 2020. The sophomore class is very good though. When they are seniors, we have a chance to be really special.

Overall agree. Think Stritz earns the nickel start though.

Wow, we do have a ton of seniors on defense this year. We are building some good depth, so hopefully more people emerge. I think we need another really strong year recruiting defensive linemen, in particular. I like our young talent at LB and in the secondary a lot.

I disagree on Cullen. He's a run stopper and has never really been deployed in obvious passing situations. I don't think that skill set lends itself well to MLB.

Also, I'd flip Scoop and Trill - Scoop at CB, Trill at Nickel.

I know. we are losing a lot after next season. D-line will be young.

He still needs to tighten up his body. He’s a big dude, but needs to lose body fat and get stronger. He moves pretty well.
I thought strength wasn't a problem for Qadir White?

Yeah, I heard he's a road grader, too. Just too unfit to be able to play.
It's been 2 years; he needs to get his act together this summer. He's a 4 star guy, start showing it!

Regarding Shy, you could be right. It could be that he is at the MIKE in running situations and off the field in passing situations. He is probably out best athlete at LB, certainly our best athlete with experience there. If he were here this spring, I would feel better about this.

I watched L Williams playing the MIKE the spring game and just think Shy will be better. Juan has skills, might be a year away. I think the staff values experience at linebacker a lot.

I would not be surprised if one of the Uber talented true frosh get in the mix. There are a lot of talented players with similar skill sets.

At nickel. I thought Stritz did a fine job. He could well end up our starter at nickel. Scoop has a lot of experience and the staff values that. I would start Stritz but am guessing what the staff will do.

I think Trill would be great there but imho, he is our best cover guy and I think we need him on the field all the time.

Lots of good players. Not enough places to put them all. Someone has to sit.

Tom did you notice if Qadir W. got some snaps at the scrimmage? I stood next to him afterwards and he's a big cat, but looks a lot slimmer. That doesn't mean he's ready to contribute but at least he's lost some weight if my observation was accurate.
He did. All 10 of the 10 available O linemen played. RG2. We got a look at the whole line depth, minus Heckel,Dakota,P.Davis. Both offenses scored well.

How things shape up at Linebacker is going to be very interesting. I think we have six guys vying for playing time.

  • L. Williams is a stud athlete and BIG. He made a big contribution on special teams, but lacks experience.

  • Armstrong has experience, but his best value may be as a third down pass coverage specialist.

  • We beat out Georgia for Juan Wallace -- he got his feet wet [primarily on ST] last year, but could factor in.

  • Tyrell Richards has played [although like Guthrie last year, primarily at DE]. Physical freak who now has spent all spring at LB.

  • Jones / Kaponga were highly rated and enrolled early. After seeing Cisco's early contributions, I wouldn't be surprised if either or both of these guys saw the field.

That's six without even factoring Shy in, or accounting for someone like Allison. Although there are huge question marks today, I have a feeling that once this group gets their sea legs that LB will shift into being viewed as a position of strength.

When do we think think Dino will stop talking about not having sufficient depth? Do you think he's waiting for the guys he inherited to leave program and the guys he brought in in yrs 2 and 3 to be seniors. Meaning he could still be talking about depth in year 6 or 7. I'm genuinely curious as to when he no longer gets to use depth.

I think depth will always be an issue at Syracuse. While I think the starting 22 are getting better and better, and we are recruiting better athletes, we will never be Bama or Clemson who can recruit 25 4 and 5 star players year after year. I see depth at certain positions being a struggle for any coach who is here, no matter what year in their tenure.

which is what I've always thought. we have to be nearly injury to have our best players on the field.

How did he look? To my eye he slimmed down.
That's hard to say, not knowing his assignment. Although generally, he'd have the DT, and Clark would have had the DE. Pressure on both sides of the 2's, but depends if it was the DE, or DT. I did see a nice run block, in the highlights. Don't think it went behind him, on that one. (Yes, he slimmed)

Always is a really long time. Do you remember the days we beat LSU, Clemson, Ohio State, Michigan? We can do it again. Just keep winning and keep Babers.

Not much to quibble with. I would just tweak S. Johnson to Jordan or Johnson and I think one of the incoming Freshmen (Likely Nunn) breaks into the 2 deep at CB instead of Johnson.
My 2 big ? on the team is OL and the lack of depth at DT-really need a 4th guy to step up there. If one of our top 3 there gets hurt, teams will run the ball down our throat. Slayton's going to be tough to replace.

My little ? is still Tommy until I see him do it for a full game. I am confident he will, but don't know it until I see a greater sampling. Happy that it seems like Welsh will be a competent 2.

I think if we can string together a couple more 8-10 win seasons under Tommy, we are going to see recruiting that we haven't seen in a long time, including getting some more quality on the lines.
