Crowd was in the 23K range. As the team progresses, the crowds are getting more likely, even without the students. I think they sense something special is happening.

Some woman sang the NA. She remembered the words. Unremarkable performance. No SSS. No cheerleaders. A slightly smaller than normal dance team was on hand and did their usual stuff. I think they have been dancing to "Roxanne" since the dance team started.

Another successful wave today. Conditions have been perfect for this...big crowds, blowout games, people a little restless and wanting to cheer for something more interesting than yet another complete dismantling of another conference opponent. Seems almost every game is the same...establish dominance, pull away even more, and soon, the only questions left to answer are 1) will Syracuse be able to double the score of the opponent and 2) will there be free tacos? I guess there is a third question...can the SU bench outscore the other team? I think that might have happened a couple of times so far this year.

We played the 2-3 all game long except for an extended period in what was up to then a very listless and mundane first half, where the score stayed at 12-12 for several minutes and SU was stuck at 12 for a long time. You knew we were about to press when KJ effected a one man press when PC inbounded after a timeout (he apparently jumped the gun one possession). As has been the case most of the season, the press sped the game up, was effective at causing Friar turnovers and was the catalyst that blew the game wide open.

Was kind of surprised that we waited so long to press given that PC was without Vincent Council, their talented PG. They do not appear to have another PG on the roster and without him, even in the half court, they struggled greatly to execute their offense. When we pressed them, it was game-set-match. Almost not fair.

Thought PC did a good job early on defense, tried to deny the ball inside with their 2-3 and entice us to shoot from the outside. We got a lot of good looks, but were ice cold with our jumpers and we didn't do much on the offensive boards early either. One of those days when we just couldn't make an outside shot. The kind of game you often end up losing. But the press caused a lot of turnovers and almost all of them resulted in easy transition baskets.

Dion was unusually subdued for most of the first half and did not do much until the press started. Thought he might have gotten a little overly concerned with getting his points, had a couple of possessions where he forced a shot when he shouldn't have. As is his wont, he usually ended up stealing the ball and getting his anyway a minute later. I think at times he might be feeling some pressure to entertain and put on a show instead of just focusing on playing good basketball. Still, he played well, especially on defense.

Thought JS played pretty well but had an awful day shooting. Fair played better than he has recently. Finished better. Really needs to use his body and pump fakes down low more...is making a run to catch PH for the most shots blocked in a season.

Speaking of not finishing well, Melo had another game were he missed a couple of point blank shots badly. Not squaring, not attacking the rim, using lame fall away scoop shots when he should be trying to dunk the ball as hard as he can. He really needs to improve in this area. I think that and his propensity to get in foul trouble are his two big weaknesses right now. Baye on the other hand does a fine job when he gets the ball down low in scoring position. But getting the ball to him in scoring position...that can be a problem. Balls bounce wildly off his hands in all directions. Even on rebounds that bounce directly to him. I wonder if he has tiny hands for his size? Maybe he is injured? Maybe it is just weak hands. It is uncanny how many balls find their way into his hands and then out again within a second or two.

Scoop quietly had a fine game. Really passing the ball well now. Not just perimeter passes, but really well done interior passing after penetrating into the lane. Good to see.

KJ has suddenly hit a bit of a slump hitting his 3 point shot attempts. He missed a couple of wide open looks he normally hits. BT did not shoot very well in limited minutes. MCW plays really aggressively, does a lot of good things when he is out there, really like his body control in the paint and his judgement with the ball. If he can shoot from the outside reliably someday, he will be an AA.

Good game from Christmas, who finished better today and appears to be getting better playing in the middle of the zone in the 2-3. When he got finally got a dunk, DW was waiting to come in at the scorer's table and I thought he was going to do a backflip he was so happy for Rak.

Impressed with Cooley, who kept his players working hard and hustling all game long, despite the major lead SU built up. He does a nice job calling plays after TOs, and has done an amazing job getting this PC team to play reasonably good defense. Their defense the last couple of years has been shockingly awful. Anyone know what is going on with his hair and the ghastly looking bald spots?

The schedule is setting up really well for SU. Playing a Monday after a Saturday is always tough, but given that the opponent is Pitt, given the huge crowd we should have for the game, and given how badly they have dominated us in the Dixon era, I think we will be ready. SU has never been 20-0. It would be great to set this record against Dixon and his crew. Let's make it happen.

War Damn Otto!

Great write up, Tom.

Agree 100% with your comment on Pitt--we'll be ready!

Excellent post. Agree on a lot of this stuff including simply not shooting well today, KJ's mini-slump, DW looking for his a little more often today than much of the rest of the season. But the above graph is the most intriguing part, IMO.

The question of whether Waiters should or shouldn't go to the NBA is irrelevant b/c I think that's where he really wants to be for the most part (which is fine, by the way).

But Melo is an interesting case b/c he still plays very soft. He gives good effort but he is constantly fading away on offense, even on passes at times (like the one that got picked in the first half trying to hit KJ across the lane). That and the foul trouble limiting his minutes. I really wonder if he's a guy that actually desperately needs another year of college?

As for Keita, my thought is that he has the look of a guy with small hands for his size. I say that as a small-handed guy. I love his effort and quickness however.

"Soft" is a word that often seems gratuitously insulting, but I don't know of a better one. Fab plays soft. It's astounding how many points he leaves out there by attempting lay-ups and flip shots within arm's length of the rim. He can reach a higher point than just about anyone on the floor; he's got to elevate and dunk everything. Not sure why he doesn't.

C.J. is having a bit of trouble with having his shot blocked; he seems too willing to come to the floor and gather himself, even on lob passes. He's doing the help-side defender a huge favor with that delay. The past couple games were worse than tonight, and he really made up for it with active hands against Providence. His defense was very good tonight.

I was thinking that Melo won't be ready for the NBA until he's able to post up and go to the hole with the ball. He's not there yet.

Melo not being ready is GREAT NEWS for Syracuse... When he Does develop into an NBA player, he will probably be on the Carrier Dome floor Beating the crap out of opposing players !!!

I think Melo has also had the ball knocked out of his hands a lot recently, particularly following rebounds. He's come back to earth a bit, but still a very important player for us.
Surprised Triche didn't play more this game-I feel like I'm saying that a lot recently.
Looks like Southerland has improved his handle some, though he often dribbles away from the basket. If he can improve it more, he could be really good next year.
Happy for the Mook.
Anything on the recruits at the game?

. Anyone know what is going on with his hair and the ghastly looking bald spots?

Supposedly he has this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alopecia_areata

The distrubing look of the bald spots is that they appeared scared up and the above article suggests that that shouldn'tbe the case. I saw him sratching the back of his head. The article said the bald areas may "tingle" a bit. He may be making it worse with his habit of scratching it. Falling behind by 30 probably doesn't help.

...dion did play a short stretch where it appeared he thought the game was called Waiters vs. Friars.

In regards to Southerland, he dribbles out when he feels he's about to get doubled or get himself in trouble.

there was a very classy move by cooley in the 2nd half. when we did our mass line change for the 2nd unit. the starters got a standing o and cooley looked over to the su bench and applauded. seems like a good coach who will get that team better

Fab's shooting hasn't been exactly spectacular. His improvement, for the most part, this year has been at the defensive end. He has learned to block with he best of them making his presence pretty intimidating. His rebounding has improved as well and while he does, at times, make dumb passes from out of the middle he has improved there as well including bounce passes that are pretty tough to finish. The education of Fab needs to focus on his shooting. He needs to learn that he is big and should just take the ball to the basket and slam it home ... he's not a 4 so his outside shooting should have less emphasis. But it would be nice if he could make those short shots as well. Fab probably could get drafted easily after this year but IMO he would benefit from 1 more year at SU to work on the finer points of his game ... his stock will go up so much more.

P.S. Did everybody see Fab's "dive" after the ball in the 1st half. He literally jumped off his feet and looked like he was diving into a pool. I thought it was hysterical. BIG E for effort tho.

Dirty looked bad shooting last night. But he has shown real improvement in his defense and in his getting under the basket for rebounds. He looks lost dribbling and a couple of times got in a bind when he tried ... but he was able to pass it out.

Dion ... what is there to say. Simply the best player on the team. Even when he has an off night, like last night (Hey only 12 points) he is simply the best player on the court. I agree with JB that there is simply nowhere that Dion can improve. What I love most though is his attitude. After the presses he was raising his hands to pump the crowd. I hope also that people note the "love" between JB and DW now. JB is treating him like a leader of this team ... patting him on the back, giving him directions to take back on court, etc. .. and Dion is listening. I may be biased (I am) but DW should be considered not only best 6th man but POY as well. I know one of the announcers said he would never get it b/c of lack of playing time but screw that ... he is our go to guy. Enjoy him ... he be gone and I think JB knows it as well as everybody else ... unless Momma can talk him back next year.

BT is up... BT is down. When he is good he is very, very good. When he is bad JB is smart enough to pull him. What I love about BT is his tenacity. He follows his shots and I am always amazed at the number of times he rebounds his own misses.

OK I get bashed now. What is going on with KJo? I know he scored double figures last night but watching him tells me he has become timid. This was his 3rd in a row subpar game. Against Marquette it looked like he was slipping, sliding, and falling as if he were playing on ice in the first half. Something is wrong and I hope he breaks out of this slump. We will definitely need the old KJo down the line.

Rak is getting good experience. He has looked very good in flashes. His rebounding is improving and he is showing some more aggression under the basket ... all good things. He will be a monster for us next year ... that is a promise. I have been a big Rak fan from the get go and I think that JB is handling his experience well while not draining his self-confidence.

Well this is getting too long. I love this team. They are certainly one of the most entertaining and explosive teams that SU has ever had. My concern is their 2nd half sluggishness and I truly believe that they get bored.

I dont get triche at all. Something has to be wrong.

I've been a little perplexed by Triche's lack of minutes recently as well. But last night he and scoop played about the same I think. MCW got a lot of minutes at the expense of both of them. I think when we get into close games, you'll see whichever 2 of Triche, Scoop and Waiters are playing better get the most minutes. Most likely Dion getting the most and Triche and Scoop alternating with each other.

I really like that Cooley. Each of his starters came over and shook Boeheim's hand during introductions. Class act.

That is not uncommon. What is funny is that the players typically greet the 3 refs and the opposing coach with fist bumps. No problem until they get to JB, who always quickly extends his hand, signaling the players that he will have nothing to do with fist bumps. They quickly switch to a hand shake and go on their way.

JB is old school all the way in this area.

Yep...all true. On that one lob in the 2H I think he tried to come back around the rim with his left for essentially a reverse. It was blocked or altered. Had he caught the pass and simply used his right hand he had an easy layup since he was on the right side of the rim.

I thought second 5 really struggled once the starters got subbed out. Both on O and D. We padded the spread with some FTs and a garbage Mookie three at the end but it wasn't pretty at all out there with the other guys.

knowing jb's penchant for the pick i'd opt for fist bump.i don't think he goes quite that deep.

I think Cooley is vastly underrated as a coach. He is the type of guy that will get that program turned around and consistently competitive again. And as much as I hate to say it, Rice will do well at Rutgers. Those were very good hires for programs that have traditionally screwed the pooch in that department.

Ed Cooley was great at Fairfield and he'll be good at Providence. I wouldn't be surprised if he starts to deploy a zone next year after what he's seen in two games, it's quite clear he has some serious admiration for Boeheim.
