We are hopefully looking forward to a possible run to the Final Four against Western Michigan, Ohio State, Kansas and Florida. We’ve played two of those schools before in the NCAA- both twice. I thought I’d look at our record in NCAA rematches, not that it really means much as most of them were far eno0ugh apart that nobody from the prior game would be around for the next one.
We lost to North Carolina 58-67 in 1957 but came back to beat them 78-76 in 1975 and 79-75 in 1987
We lost to Duke 81-91 in 1966 and 67-80 in 1998
We lost to Maryland 75-91 in 1973 but beat them 72-70 in 2004
We beat Kansas State 95-87 in overtime in 1975 and beat them again 75-59 in 2012
We lost to Kentucky 79-95 in 1975 and 67-76 in 1996 but beat them 52-50 in 2000
We lost to Western Kentucky 86-87 in 1978 but beat them 104-86 in 1987
We lost to Ohio State 74-79 in 1983 and 70-77 in 2012
We lost to Virginia 55-63 in 1984 but beat them 63-61 in 1990
We lost to Indiana 73-74 in 1987 but beat them 61-50 in 2013
We beat Missouri 83-80 in 1989 but lost to them 88-98 in overtime in 1994
We beat Kansas 60-57 in 1996, lost to them 58-87 in 2001 but beat them 81-78 in 2003
(They’ve outscored us by 23!)
We beat Oklahoma 63-47 in 2003 when we had the stud but lost to them in 2009 71-84 when they had the stud.
We lost to Vermont 57-60 in overtime in 2005 but beat them 79-56 in 2010
(Yeah, everybody remembers that one!)
We lost to Marquette 62-66 in 2011 but beat them 55-39 in 2013
We are 4-10 the first time we played those teams, 8-6 in the second game and 3-0 in the third game. We have yet to play anyone for a fourth time, which would happen if we meet Kansas.
