Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes.
Kris Joseph +19NP in 38M season: +293NP in 695M per 40M: +16.9NP
Brandon Triche +16NP in 24M season: +230NP in 515M per 40M: +17.9NP
CJ Fair +10NP in 26M season: +218NP in 578M per 40M: +15.1NP
Baye Moussa Keita +7NP in 25M season: +90NP in 297M per 40M: +12.1NP
Scoop Jardine +7NP in 27M season: +231NP in 529M per 40M: +17.5NP
James Southerland +5NP in 17M season: +186NP in 383M per 40M: +19.4NP
Dion Waiters -1NP in 29M season: +243NP in 518M per 40M: +18.8NP
Rakeem Christmas -2NP in 14M season: +94NP in 295M per 40M: +12.7NP
Michael Carter-Williams 0NP in 0M season: +81NP in 229M per 40M: +14.1NP
Fab Melo 0NP in 0M season: +184NP in 449M per 40M: +16.4NP
Comment: Dion Waiters had briefly taken the lead in NP per 40 over Southerland, (who is still buoyed by huge early games against lesser competition), but he’s fallen back due to the last three games in which he has 1NP in 70 minutes. Meanwhile Brandon Triche, with 36 NP in 59 minutes in the last two games, is moving up.
Offensive Dude of the Game: Brandon Triche had 18 points and 2 assists, for a total of 20 ‘points’ in 24 minutes. It was the 3rd time Triche won the ODOG. Dion Waiters still leads with 8.
Shooting Breakdown: SU was 19/30 (.633) from inside the arc, 4/20 from outside, (.200) and 13/17 from the line (.765). West Virginia was 16/36 (.444), 6/18, (.333). and 11/15, (.733) 11 of our 23 baskets were assisted, (48%), vs. 16 of West Virginia’s 22, (73%).
Rebounding: Syracuse had 5 offensive and 15 defensive rebounds. West Virginia had 19 offensive and 22 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 18.5% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 56% of the time. West Virginia had 17 turnovers, of which 11 were Syracuse steals, (65%). Syracuse had 6 turnovers of which 3 were West Virginia steals, (50%). We had 37 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). They had 47. It was the fourth time the opposition has had more ’MP’ than us: Marshall, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame and this game. This was the largest gap, (we were -8 vs. Pitt).
And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are:
Syracuse: 50 FGA minus 5 offensive rebounds plus 6 turnovers plus 47.5% of 17 free throws = 59.125 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 59 possessions in which we scored 63 points or 1.034 points per possession. For the season it’s 1.152.
West Virginia: 54-19+17 plus 47.5% of 15 = 59.125 possessions. Let’s call that 59 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 61 points or 1.034 points per possession. For the season it’s 0.898 .
Dry stretches were a problem last year- we’d go 8-10 minutes with the offense not functioning. I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 14-15, 14-9, 17-21, 18-16. We’ve had 16 sub 15 point quarters this year,(7 in the last three games), and lost 25 quarters (of 92- also 7 in the last three games).
