I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.)

Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)

Average net points/40 by position, (based on averaging 20+ minutes per game), since the 1980-81 season:
Centers 18.6; Power Forwards: 18.4; Small Forwards: 16.1, Shooting Guards: 13.3; Point Guards: 13.5

Jimmy Boeheim +24NP in 33 minutes = +316NP in 898 minutes = +14.1NP/40 for season
Cole Swider +22NP in 36 minutes = +338NP in 898 minutes = +15.1NP/40 for season
Joe Girard +14NP in 28 minutes = +318NP in 865 minutes = +14.7NP/40 for season
Buddy Boeheim +13NP in 37 minutes = +357NP in 975 minutes = +14.6NP/40 for season
Symir Torrence +5NP in 17 minutes = +88NP in 297 minutes = +11.9NP/40 for season
Bourama Sidibie +2NP in 18 minutes = +2NP in 30 minutes = +2.7NP/40 for season
Benny Williams +2NP in 7 minutes = +17NP in 270 minutes = +2.5NP/40 for season
Frank Anselem +1NP in 19 minutes = +83NP in 298 minutes = +11.1NP/40 for season
John Bol Ajak 0NP in 4 minutes = +8NP in 40 minutes = +8.0NP/40 for season

DNP coach’s decision
Chaz Owens 0NP in 0 minutes = +3NP in 5 minutes = +24.0NP/40 for season

Injured or ill and couldn’t play
Jesse Edwards 0NP in 0 minutes = +352NP in 673 minutes = +20.9NP/40 for season

Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog)
(Points plus assists)
Cole Swider 18 points and 4 assists = 22

Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts)
Cole Swider 18 points – 6mfg – 1mft = +7

Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Jimmy Boeheim 13 points of 19 = 68.4%

My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Buddy Boeheim 37 minutes

TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 6 of our 32 misses = 18.3%
They rebounded 14 of their 43 misses = 32.6%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 8 points on 6 O-Rebs = 1.333 points/O-Reb
They got 11 points on 14 O-Rebs = 0.785 points/O-Reb

Points per Takeover
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 23 points from 15 takeovers = 1.533 points/takeaway
They had 17 points from 13 takeovers = 1.308 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 31 points in 31 unsettled situations = 1.000 points/situation
They had 28 points in 27 unsettled situations = 1.037 points/situation

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 35 + 15 = 50
They had 40 + 13 = 53

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 20 for 36 on twos, (55.6%), 10 for 23 on threes (43.5%) and 6 for 11 on frees (54.5%)
They were 18 for 38 on twos, (47.4%), 5 for 28 on threes (17.9%) and 5 for 6 on frees (83.3%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FT = Free Throws

We had 36 PIP, 34 POP, 30 OL, 4 TZ, 6 FT
They had 32 PIP, 19 POP, 15 OL, 4 TZ, 5 FT

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 7 FBP in 48 opportunities (14.6%)
They scored 5 FBP in 38 opportunities (13.2%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 55 FCP and 8 SCP
They had 35 FCP and 11 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 68 points and our bench scored 8 points.
Their starters scored 40 points and their bench scored 16 points.

Efficiency

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 15 of our 30 field goals = 50.0%
They assisted 14 of their 23 field goals = 60.9%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 76 points in 67 possessions = 1.134 points/ possession
They scored 56 points in 70 possessions = 0.800 points/possession
It was a 137-possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 76 points in 64 possessions = 1.1875 points/ possession
They scored 56 points in 69 possessions = 0.812 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 76 points, missed 29 field goals and missed 5 free throws = net +42
They scored 56 points, missed 43 field goals and missed 1 free throws = net +12

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 76 on 36 two-point attempts, 23 three-point attempts and 5 free throw attempts = 76 of a possible 152 points = 50.0% of possible points scored.
They scored 56 on 20 two-point attempts, 28 three-point attempts and 11 free throw attempts = 56 of a possible 166 points = 33.7% of possible points scored.

Fouls

(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 36 two-point shots and were fouled 11 times = 3.27
They attempted 38 two-point shots and were fouled 11 times = 3.45

Comments:

- Net Points per 40 minutes: Cole Swider 15.1, Joe Girard 14.7, Buddy Boeheim 14.6, Jimmy Beoheim 14.1. All good numbers but there’s no “bell-cow” who can take over a game and carry the team.

- John Bol Ajak has played exactly 40 minutes. In that ‘game’, he’s scored only 3 points but has 9 rebounds, 4 assists and block. He has only 1 turnover and 2 fouls. He’s only 1 for 4 from the field and 1 for 2 from the foul line. From the three point line he’s got one miss, no makes and one frowning coach. Still, I think he can help us if needed.

- Our rebounding, which has been pretty good. It wasn’t good today. We gave up 14 offensive rebounds, probably because the worse a shot is missed, the more unpredictable its subsequent flight path is. Jimmy B had 10 boards but our second-best guy was Joe Girard. If Joe is your second-best rebounder…

- We’ve had a breakthrough in points off turnovers with 23 from 15 turnover. It was a game for that as BC had 17 from 13. That’s 40 of the 132 point scored in the game, compared to 45 from three pointers, 12 on fast breaks and 11 from the line.

- The refs let ‘em play, calling a total of only 22 fouls and putting the teams on the line a total of 17 times in what Jim Boeheim called a “physical team”.

- Brevin Galloway’s two games against Syracuse: 2 for 23 from the arc. Hey – if it’s OK with the coach, just keep firing away!

- When you miss 29 field goals and they miss 43, you’re probably going to win.
