I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.) This is limited to recruited scholarship players only.

Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)

Average net points/40 by position, (based on averaging 20+ minutes per game), since the 1980-81 season:
Centers 18.6; Power Forwards: 18.4; Small Forwards: 16.1, Shooting Guards: 13.3; Point Guards: 13.5

Jesse Edwards +17NP in 36 minutes = +550NP in 898 minutes = +24.5NP/40 for season
Judah Mintz +12NP in 37 minutes = +334NP in 922 minutes = +14.5NP/40 for season
Benny Williams +7NP in 26 minutes = +151NP in 559 minutes = +10.8NP/40 for season
Chris Bell +6NP in 19 minutes = +95NP in 548 minutes = +6.9NP/40 for season
Maliq Brown +5NP in 16 minutes = +243NP in 523 minutes = +18.6NP/40 for season
Symir Torrence +4NP in 10 minutes = +105NP in 318 minutes = +13.2NP/40 for season
Justin Taylor +4NP in 11 minutes = +114NP in 450 minutes = +10.1NP/40 for season
Joe Girard +4NP in 29 minutes = +325NP in 958 minutes = +13.6NP/40 for season
Mounir Hima -2NP in 4 minutes = +51NP in 189 minutes = +10.8NP/40 for season
Quadir Copeland -3NP in 13 minutes = +19NP in 129 minutes = +5.9NP/40 for season

Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog)
(Points plus assists)
Judah Mintz 23 points and 1 assists = 24

Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts)
Judah Mintz 23 points – 7mfg – 2mft = +14

Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Jesse Edwards 12 points of 19 = 63.2%

My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Judah Mintz 37 minutes

TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 7 of our 33 misses = 21.2%
They rebounded 12 of their 33 misses = 36.3%

Unsettled Situations
[Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 19 points in 14 unsettled situations = 1.357 points/situation
They had 29 points in 23 unsettled situations = 1.261 points/situation

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 28 + 7 = 35
They had 38 + 11 = 49

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 20 for 39 on twos, (51.3%), 7 for 18 on threes (38.9%) and 12 for 17 on frees (70.6%)
They were 20 for 29 on twos, (69.0%), 14 for 36 on threes (38.9%) and 9 for 15 on frees (60.0%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FT = Free Throws

We had 26 PIP, 35 POP, 21 OL, 14 TZ, 12 FT
They had 38 PIP, 44 POP, 42 OL, 2 TZ, 9 FT

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 9 FBP in 27 opportunities (33.3%)
They scored 12 FBP in 34 opportunities (35.3%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 43 FCP and 10 SCP
They had 60 FCP and 19 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 50 points and our bench scored 15 points.
Their starters scored 83 points and their bench scored 8 points.

Efficiency

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 9 of our 27 field goals = 33.3%
They assisted 28 of their 34 field goals = 82.4%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 73 points in 69 possessions = 1.058 points/ possession
They scored 91 points in 67 possessions = 1.358 points/possession
It was a 136-possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 73 points in 65 possessions = 1.123 points/ possession
They scored 91 points in 72 possessions = 1.264 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 73 points, missed 30 field goals and missed 5 free throws = net +38
They scored 91 points, missed 31 field goals and missed 6 free throws = net +54

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 73 on 39 two-point attempts, 18 three-point attempts and 17 free throw attempts = 73 of a possible 149 points = 49.0% of possible points scored.
They scored 91 on 29 two-point attempts, 36 three-point attempts and 15 free throw attempts = 91 of a possible 181 points = 50.3% of possible points scored.

Fouls

(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 39 two-point shots and were fouled 15 times = 2.60
They attempted 29 two-point shots and were fouled 13 times = 2.23

Comments:

- Jesse led us in NP, which is hugely deceiving. He was no factor at all when the game was decided in the first half.

- Our starting backcourt had 1 assist and 6 turnovers.

- We were actually more efficient in ‘unsettled situations’, (offensive rebounds and takeovers) (1.357 points per vs. 1.261) but were -9 in points scored in those situations because we had 10 fewer such situations.

- We were -14 in ‘manufactured possessions’, (rebounds + takeovers). The only previous game that was that bad was the Illinois game, also -14.

- It’s rare that we win the “bench points” stat (15-8) or lost the “starter scoring” stat. It’s unheard for us to lost starter scoring by 33 points! (50-83)
