I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.) This is limited to recruited scholarship players only.

Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)

Average net points/40 by position, (based on averaging 20+ minutes per game), since the 1980-81 season:
Centers 18.6; Power Forwards: 18.4; Small Forwards: 16.1, Shooting Guards: 13.3; Point Guards: 13.5
Joe Girard +16NP in 35 minutes = +325NP in 923 minutes = +14.1NP/40 for season
Judah Mintz +10NP in 35 minutes = +325NP in 870 minutes = +14.9NP/40 for season
Jesse Edwards +10NP in 37 minutes = +530NP in 863 minutes = +24.6NP/40 for season
Maliq Brown +8NP in 30 minutes = +235NP in 507 minutes = +18.5NP/40 for season
Benny Williams +3NP in 14 minutes = +144NP in 526 minutes = +11.0NP/40 for season
Justin Taylor +2NP in 20 minutes = +110NP in 439 minutes = +10.0NP/40 for season
Symir Torrence -3NP in 8 minutes = +101NP in 308 minutes = +13.1NP/40 for season
Quadir Copeland -3NP in 5 minutes = +22NP in 105 minutes = +8.4NP/40 for season
John Bol Ajak 0NP in 1 minutes = +34NP in 121 minutes = +11.3NP/40 for season
Mounir Hima 0NP in 3 minutes = +50NP in 184 minutes = +10.9NP/40 for season
Chris Bell -5NP in 11 minutes = +90NP in 530 minutes = +6.8NP/40 for season

Left Team

Awards

Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog)
(Points plus assists)
Joe Girard 21 points and 1 assists = 22

Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts)
Joe Girard 21 points – 4mfg – 1mft = +16

Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Joe Girard 21 points of 33 = 63.6%

My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Joe Girard and Judah Mintz 35 minutes

TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 10 of our 38 misses = 26.3%
They rebounded 10 of their 25 misses = 40.0%

Unsettled Situations
[Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 22 points in 24 unsettled situations = 0.917 points/situation
They had 16 points in 22 unsettled situations = 0.727 points/situation

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 25 + 14 = 39
They had 38 + 12 = 50

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 13 for 39 on twos, (33.3%), 6 for 16 on threes (37.5%) and 11 for 14 on frees (78.6%)
They were 17 for 28 on twos, (58.6%), 13 for 26 on threes (50.0%) and 4 for 4 on frees (100.0%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FT = Free Throws

We had 22 PIP, 22 POP, 18 OL, 4 TZ, 4 FT
They had 34 PIP, 39 POP, 39 OL, 0 TZ, 11 FT

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 12 FBP in 27 opportunities (44.4%)
They scored 12 FBP in 41 opportunities (29.3%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 23 FCP and 7 SCP
They had 50 FCP and 11 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 50 points and our bench scored 5 points.
Their starters scored 53 points and their bench scored 24 points.

Efficiency

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 7 of our 19 field goals = 36.8%
They assisted 22 of their 30 field goals = 73.3%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 55 points in 64 possessions = 0.859 points/ possession
They scored 77 points in 61 possessions = 1.262 points/possession
It was a 125-possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 55 points in 62 possessions = 0.887 points/ possession
They scored 77 points in 57 possessions = 1.351 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 55 points, missed 36 field goals and missed 3 free throws = net +16
They scored 77 points, missed 25 field goals and missed 0 free throws = net +52

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 55 on 39 two-point attempts, 18 three-point attempts and 14 free throw attempts = 55 of a possible 140 points = 39.3% of possible points scored.
They scored 77 on 29 two-point attempts, 26 three-point attempts and 4 free throw attempts = 77 of a possible 140 points = 55.0% of possible points scored.

Fouls

(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 39 two-point shots and were fouled 14 times = 2.79
They attempted 29 two-point shots and were fouled 9 times = 3.22

Comments:

- I have both Judah and Joe with 325NP. Joe’s played more minutes so his 40m average is slightly lower, 14.1 vs. 14.9 but they make quite a pair. Our backcourt scored 39 of our 55 points in this game.

- Stats of the game: Jesse Edwards was 2 for 3 from the field and 1 for 2 from the foul line with no assists. Duke took him right out of the game.

- It was the third consecutive game in which Symir Torrence had -3NP. That’s -9NP in 20 minutes. Against Duke last year in the ACCT he was +15NP in 40m, including 11 assists. He had 1 yesterday.

- Mounri Hima has reverted to what he was at Duquense: an ineffectual and little used reserve. In the last 5 games, he’s played 9 minutes and has 0NP. Prior to that he had 50NP in 175m, (11.4/40m and 8m per game)

- Joe Girard won all four awards for the second time this year. (The other was Florida State.)

- It’s amazing that both teams had 10 offensive rebounds. Until you see that they had 28 defensive rebounds to our 15. We’ve now been out-rebounded 5 of our last 6 games. Before that we’d actually won the rebounding in 10 of 21 games. It’s getting worse, not better.

- We had a 15-6 edge in points off turnovers. It meant we didn’t lose by 30.

- I’m still amazed that we had the same number of fast break points as Duke: 12-12. We got a bunch of early points on steals but Duke spent the whole game, seemingly , beating us down court and many of the 13 threes they got where at the end of what looked like fast breaks to me, against an unsettled defense. I’m not sure what the official definition of a fast break is but to me, if the defense hasn’t really gotten a chance to set up, it’s a fast break. I think the official scorer looked for plays where the team with the ball went right to the basket to score. But many fast breaks these days set up three pointers – and do it beautifully.

- We got crushed on “first chance” points, (our initial sets), 23-50. But we’ve lost that stat 4 times in a row and 5 games in 6, (we were even in the Virginia game).

- I’m surprised that this was a 125 possession game. That’s 16 less than the NC State game and 2 more than the Virginia game. It did not seem like a slow-moving game. They scored quickly and got the ball back quickly.

- Both teams would have scored 140 points if every shot went in. They didn’t. They hit a higher percentage of three pointers than we did of two pointers

- We may not have liked the no-calls under the basket but we got to the line more times than they did, 14-4.
