TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 8 of our 34 misses = 23.5%
They rebounded 7 of their 31 misses = 22.6%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 4 points on 7 O-Rebs = 0.571 points/O-Reb
They got 3 points on 8 O-Rebs = 0.375 points/O-Reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)
We had 12 turnovers – 4 steals = 8 unforced
They had 17 turnovers – 6 steals = 11 unforced

Points per Takeover
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 15 points from 17 takeovers = 0.882 points/takeaway
They had 10 points from 12 takeovers = 0.833 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Point s+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 19 points in 24 unsettled situations = 0.792 points
They had 13 points in 20 unsettled situations = 0.650 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 33 + 17 = 50
They had 32 + 12 = 44

Hustle Stats
One of the radio sponsors gives an award to the team that had the most “hustle stats”, which they define as rebounds + steals + blocks. I decided to keep track of that, too:
We had 33 + 3 + 6 = 42
They had 32 + 0 + 4= 36

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 18 for 37 on twos, (48.6%), 5 for 14 on threes (35.7%) and 28 for 36 on frees (77.8%)
They were 18 for 37 on twos, (48.6%), 6 for 15 on threes (40.0%) and 18 for 26 on frees (69.2%)
Combined percentages were: 1621 (486 + 357 + 778) vs. 1578 (486 + 400 + 692) = +43

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FBP = fast break points
POTO= points off turnovers

We had 34 PIP, 28 POP, 15 OL, 2 TZ, 15 POTO, 21 FBP
They had 34 PIP, 26 POP, 18 OL, 2 TZ, 10 POTO, 9 FBP

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 21 FBP in 35 opportunities (63.1%)
They scored 9 FBP in 28 opportunities (32.1%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 26 FCP and 4 SCP
They had 42 FCP and 3 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 74 points and our bench scored 5 points
Their starters scored 65 points and their bench scored 7 points

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 12 of our 23 field goals = 52.2%
They assisted 18 of their 24 field goals = 75.0%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 79 points in 73 possessions = 1.082 points/ possession
They scored 72 points in 73 possessions = 0.986 points/possession
It was a 146 possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 79 points in 68 possessions = 1.162 points/ possession
They scored 72 points in 64 possessions = 1.125 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 79 points, missed 28 field goals and missed 8 free throws = net +43
They scored 72 points, missed 28 field goals and missed 8 free throws = net +36

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 79 on 37 two point attempts, 14 three point attempts and 36 free throw attempts = 79 of a possible 152 points = 52.0% of possible points scored.
They scored 72 on 37 two point attempts, 15 three point attempts and 26 free throw attempts = 72 of a possible 145 points = 49.7% of possible points scored.

Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)

10-20, 17-18, 22-13, 30-21

Fouls

(Two point shots and free throws attempted per times fouled.)
We attempted 37 two point shots, attempted 36 free throws and were fouled 26 times = 1.42; 1.38
They attempted 37 two point shots, attempted 26 free throws and were fouled 20 times = 1.85; 1.36
We were more likely to get calls when attempting two point shots and got more shots per foul.

Comments

- It was not a game for put-backs: the two teams had 7 second chance points from 15 offensive rebounds.

- It was also not a game for good ball-handling. The two teams had 29 turnovers, of which 19 were not the result of steals.

- It was also not a Twilight Zone game. Each made exactly one shot between the paint and the arc.

- And the game was not about the arc. The two teams attempted 29 treys between them and only hit 11, (actually a good percentage: 37.9%). But they hit one more trey than we did: 5-6 and we won by 7. Since there was no difference in the two points shots, 9both 18 for 37), we really won it at the line, 28-18. And we got to the line because of all those drives to the basket.

- It was also not a game for the bench, with a total of 12 points between the two teams. We won it because our starter out-scored their starter 74-65.

- How did we break even on points in the paint while giving up 33 points to Moses Wright? The key was fast break points: 21-9. Those are points in the paint, too.

- We got out-scored in our, (vs. their) opening sets, 26-42. We made up for it in free throws and those fast breaks.
