I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.)

Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)

Jesse Edwards +8NP in 19 minutes = +42NP in 154 minutes = +10.9NP/40 for season
Buddy Boeheim +5NP in 36 minutes = +307NP in 903 minutes = +13.6NP/40 for season
Joe Girard +4NP in 24 minutes = +227NP in 776 minutes = +11.7NP/40 for season
Quincy Guerrier +3NP in 35 minutes = +406NP in 921 minutes = +17.6NP/40 for season
Alan Griffin 0NP in 13 minutes = +373NP in 819 minutes = +18.2NP/40 for season
Kadary Richmond -1NP in 23 minutes = +216NP in 581 minutes = +14.9NP/40 for season
Robert Braswell -2NP in 15 minutes = +62NP in 257 minutes = +9.6NP/40 for season
Marek Dolezaj -4NP in 35 minutes = +342NP in 981 minutes = +13.9NP/40 for season

DNP coach’s decision
John Bol Ajak 0NP in 0 minutes = -1NP in 50 minutes = -0.8NP/40 for season
Frank Anselem 0NP in 0 minutes = +5NP in 26 minutes = +7.7NP/40 for season
Woody Newton 0NP in 0 minutes = +34NP in 87 minutes = +15.6NP/40 for season
Chaz Owens 0NP in 0 minutes = 0NP in 2 minutes = 0.0NP/40 for season

Injured and couldn’t play
Bourama Sidibie 0NP in 0 minutes = 0NP in 15 minutes = 0.0NP/40 for season

Awards

Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog)
(Points plus assists)
Buddy Boeheim and Joe Girard 12 points and 1 assists = 13

Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts)
Joe Girard 12 points – 6 mfg – 0 mft = +6

Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Joe Girard 12 points of 27 = 44.4%

My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Buddy Boeheim 36 minutes

TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 5 of our 34 misses = 14.7%
They rebounded 11 of their 37 misses = 29.7%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 5 points on 5 O-Rebs = 1.000 points/O-Reb
They got 3 points on 11 O-Rebs = 0.273 points/O-Reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)
We had 11 turnovers – 8 steals = 3 unforced
They had 8 turnovers – 3 steals = 5 unforced

Points per Takeover
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 6 points from 8 takeovers = 0.750 points/takeaway
They had 18 points from 11 takeovers = 1.636 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 11 points in 13 unsettled situations = 0.846 points
They had 21 points in 22 unsettled situations = 0.955 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 31 + 8 = 39
They had 40 + 11 = 51

Hustle Stats
One of the radio sponsors gives an award to the team that had the most “hustle stats”, which they define as rebounds + blocks + steals. I decided to keep track of that, too:
We had 31 + 4 + 3 = 38
They had 40 + 4 + 8 = 52

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 9 for 27 on twos, (33.3%), 5 for 23 on threes (21.7%) and 13 for 17 on frees (76.5%)
They were 16 for 34 on twos, (47.1%), 7 for 26 on threes (26.9%) and 9 for 14 on frees (64.3%)
Combined percentages were: 333 + 217 + 765 = 1315 vs. 471 + 269 + 643 = 1383 = -68

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FBP = fast break points
POTO= points off turnovers

We had 16 PIP, 17 POP, 15 OL, 2 TZ, 6 POTO, 0 FBP
They had 30 PIP, 23 POP, 21 OL, 2 TZ, 18 POTO, 8 FBP

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 0 FBP in 33 opportunities (0.0%)
They scored 8 FBP in 41 opportunities (19.5%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 46 FCP and 5 SCP
They had 62 FCP and 3 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 36 points and our bench scored 10 points.
Their starters scored 50 points and their bench scored 12 points.

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 5 of our 14 field goals = 35.7%
They assisted 15 of their 23 field goals = 65.2%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 46 points in 64 possessions = 0.719 points/ possession
They scored 62 points in 64 possessions = 0.969 points/possession
It was a 128-possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 46 points in 58 possessions = 0.793 points/ possession
They scored 62 points in 67 possessions = 0.925 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 46 points, missed 25 field goals and missed 4 free throws = net +6
They scored 62 points, missed 44 field goals and missed 2 free throws = net +20

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 46 on 27 two point attempts, 23 three point attempts and 17 free throw attempts = 46 of a possible 140 points = 32.9% of possible points scored.
They scored 62 on 34 two point attempts, 26 three point attempts and 14 free throw attempts = 62 of a possible 160 points = 38.75% of possible points scored.

Fouls

(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 27 two point shots and were fouled 16 times = 1.69
They attempted 34 two point shots and were fouled 17 times = 2.00
At this rate, if we’d taken 34 two point shots, we’d have been fouled 20 times.

Comments

- The time may come when this isn’t true but in the 2020-21 season, if Jesse Edwards leads the team in net points, we likely lost the game.

- It’s tough to realize that Quincy Guerrier and Alan Griffin are still our leader sin net points yet it’s bene a long time since they added much to their totals. In this tournament. They both averaged 18NP per 40 minutes. In this tournament, Quincy got 15NP in 98 minutes, Alan -1 in 39 minutes. If the ‘G’ men had just played their average game, we might still be playing.

- I got flamed by a couple of posters, (but supported by 15 others) for saying joe Girard had a good game against Houston. You could argue that nobody had a good game, (except Jesse), but by the standards of how our players played in the Houston, game, Joe did pretty well, leading the team in scoring, (tied with Buddy), was the O-Dog, (also tied with Buddy), but shot much better than Buddy, leading the team in both shooting and scoring efficiency. He had 2 turnovers but Kadary Richmond had 3 in fewer minutes. Give the guy what credit he is due - and stop with the ‘fat’ jokes. They’re not funny.

- In three tournament games, we missed 83 shots and rebounded them 14 times, 16.9%. Our opposition missed 125 shots and rebounded them 45 times, 36.0%. It’s amazing we made it to the Sweet 16 with those stats. You can overcome them if you are out-shooting the other team by 15-20 percent age points but not when they are out-shooting you by 10 points.

- Here’s a statistical anomaly. I like to add together the second chance points and the points off turnovers to see how the two teams are functioning in unsettled situations. When Houston got their 11 offensive rebounds, they scored only 3 points, remarkable defensive performance by Syracuse, (normally teams score a point for every offensive rebound or turnover). But the Cougars got 18 points after 11 SU turnovers. We had 11 points in 13 of these situations They had 21 in 22 of them, 10 points of their 16 point advantage. They scored 8 points on fast breaks to our none, so that was part of it- but not all of it.

- It’s sad to see a Syracuse team get zero fast break points but that was more than a difference in eras: you have to get the ball to fast break, (otherwise it looks pretty silly), and we just didn’t grab the rock enough.

- With JB’s tight rotation, if our starters get out-scored, we’re in trouble. 36-50 is big trouble.

- Syracuse played good defense in this game, (0.969 points per possession or 0.925 discounting turnovers and O-rebs. 38.75% of potential points scored is all shots had gone in). They were just playing a great defense (0.719 or 0.793 and 32.9%).
