I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.)

Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)

Jimmy Boeheim +22NP in 36 minutes = +67NP in 128 minutes = +20.9NP/40 for season
Buddy Boeheim +16NP in 39 minutes = +64NP in 148 minutes = +17.3NP/40 for season
Jesse Edwards +6NP in 16 minutes = +42NP in 80 minutes = +21.0NP/40 for season
Symir Torrence +1NP in 4 minutes = +10NP in 54 minutes = +7.4NP/40 for season
Benny Williams 0NP in 17 minutes = +7NP in 76 minutes = +3.7NP/40 for season
Cole Swider -3NP in 36 minutes = +38NP in 125 minutes = +12.2NP/40 for season
Frank Anselem -3NP in 15 minutes = +16NP in 57 minutes = +11.2NP/40 for season
Joe Girard -4NP in 37 minutes = +69NP in 121 minutes = +22.8NP/40 for season

DNP coach’s decision
John Bol Ajak 0NP in 0 minutes = +5NP in 7 minutes = +28.5NP/40 for season
Chaz Owens 0NP in 0 minutes = 0NP in 0 minutes = 0.0NP/40 for season

Injured and couldn’t play
Bourama Sidibie 0NP in 0 minutes = 0NP in 0 minutes = 0.0NP/40 for season

Awards

Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog)
(Points plus assists)
Buddy Boeheim 20 points and 2 assists = 22

Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts)
Buddy Boeheim 20 points – 11 mfg – 1 mft = +8
Jimmy Boeheim 17 points – 8 mfg – 1 mft = +8

Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Jimmy Boeheim 17 points of 34 = 50.0%
Jesse Edwards 6 points of 12 = 50.0%

My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Buddy Boeheim 40 minutes

TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 15 of our 45 misses = 33.3%
They rebounded 8 of their 36 misses = 22.2%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 16 points on 15 O-Rebs = 1.067 points/O-Reb
They got 6 points on 8 O-Rebs = 0.750 points/O-Reb

Points per Takeover
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 15 points from 14 takeovers = 1.071 points/takeaway
They had 16 points from 16 takeovers = 1.000 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 31 points in 29 unsettled situations = 1.069 points/situation
They had 22 points in 24 unsettled situations = 0.917 points/situation

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 43 + 14 = 57
They had 38 + 16 = 54

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 13 for 39 on twos, (33.3%), 5 for 23 on threes (21.7%) and 14 for 16 on frees (87.5%)
They were 17 for 39 on twos, (43.6%), 7 for 18 on threes (38.9%) and 12 for 17 on frees (70.6%)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FT = Free Throws

We had 24 PIP, 17 POP, 15 OL, 2 TZ, 14FT
They had 30 PIP, 25 POP, 21 OL, 4 TZ, 12FT

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 5 FBP in 40 opportunities (12.5%)
They scored 7 FBP in 48 opportunities (14.6%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 20 FCP and 16 SCP
They had 42 FCP and 6 SCP

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 55 points and our bench scored 0 points.
Their starters scored 44 points and their bench scored 23 points.

Efficiency

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 8 of our 18 field goals = 44.4%
They assisted 19 of their 24 field goals = 79.2%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 55 points in 69 possessions = 0.797 points/ possession
They scored 67 points in 71 possessions = 0.944 points/possession
It was a 140-possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 55 points in 70 possessions = 0.786 points/ possession
They scored 67 points in 65 possessions = 1.031 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 55 points, missed 44 field goals and missed 2 free throws = net +9
They scored 67 points, missed 33 field goals and missed 5 free throws = net +29

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 55 on 39 two-point attempts, 23 three-point attempts and 16 free throw attempts = 55 of a possible 163 points = 33.7% of possible points scored.
They scored 67 on 39 two-point attempts, 18 three-point attempts and 17 free throw attempts = 67 of a possible 149 points = 45.0% of possible points scored.

Fouls

(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 39 two-point shots and were fouled 13 times = 3.00
They attempted 39 two-point shots and were fouled 15 times = 2.60

Comments
- Joe Girard’s NP per 40 was 34.8 before the VCU game. Now it’s 22.8.
- There were post game comments about Jim Boeheim showing ‘favoritism’ by playing his sons so much. They were the only guys we had who were doing anything.
- One thing that did improve in this game was our rebounding: In the Drexel and Colgate games we rebounded 27% of misses to 39% for the opposition. In this game it was 33% to 22%.
- But the formula of getting a plus margin in turnovers to offset any rebounding deficit isn’t working. We were +9 against Drexel but have broken even in the rest of the games.
- In our first two games we had 100 points off our opening sets to 75 for the opposition. In the last two games that’s 55-98.
- Jim likes to stick with his best players and VCU coach Mike Rhoades likes to alternate players so he can press the whole game. But having your bench out-scored 0-23 is hard to overcome. Benny Williams, Frank Anselem and Symir Torrance played a total of 36 minutes and got off three shots, missing all three and not getting to the line. Their combined NP was -2. That’s two 4-star and a 5-star recruit.
- Our assists this year: 26 to 17 to 13 to 8.
- The opposition has been more likely to draw a foul on a two point shot in every game this season, although the difference her was just two calls.
