TEAM STATS

Possession

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 14 of our 42 misses = 26.2%
They rebounded 7 of their 26 misses = 26.9%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 16 points on 14 O-Rebs = 1.143 points/O-reb
They got 13 points on 7 O-Rebs = 1.857 points/O-reb

Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)
We had 10 turnovers – 7 steals = 4 unforced
They had 11 turnovers – 9 steals = 2 unforced

Points per Takeaway
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 16 points from 11 takeaways = 1.455 points/takeaway
They had 18 points from 10 takeaways = 1.800 points/takeaway

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeaway: [Second Chance Point + Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 32 points in 25 unsettled situations = 1.280 points
They had 31 points in 17 unsettled situations = 1.824 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 33 + 10 = 43
They had 35 + 11 = 46

Hustle Stats
One of the radio sponsors gives an award to the team that had the most “hustle stats”, which they define as rebounds + steals + blocks. I decided to keep track of that, too:
We had 33 + 4 + 9 = 46
They had 35 + 8 + 7 = 50

Scoring

Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 11 for 32 on twos, (34.4%), 8 for 25 on threes (32.0%) and 7 for 11 on frees (63.6%)
They were 10 for 26 on twos, (38.5%), 18 for 25 on threes (72.0%) and 5 for 11 on frees (45.5%)
Combined percentages were: 1300 (344 + 320 + 636) vs. 1560 (385 + 720 + 455) = -260

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, two point jumpers from outside the paint, FBP = fast break points
POTO= points off turnovers

We had 20 PIP, 26 POP, 24 OL, 2 TZ, 16 POTO, 5 FBP
They had 18 PIP, 56 POP, 54 OL, 2 TZ, 18 POTO, 0 FBP

Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 5 FBP in 32 opportunities (15.6%)
They scored 0 FBP in 43 opportunities (00.0%)

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 25 FCP and 16 SCP
They had 61 FCP and 13 SCP

Last Possessions
(Points scored on the last full possession of a half, a game or an overtime period.)
We scored 3 points
They scored 0 points

Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 42 points and our bench scored 11 points
Their starters scored 62 points and their bench scored 17 points

Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 8 of our 19 field goals = 42.1%
They assisted 21 of their 28 field goals = 75.0%

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 53 points in 59 possessions = 0.898 points/ possession
They scored 79 points in 60 possessions = 1.317 points/possession
It was a 119 possession game.

If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 53 points in 62 possessions = 0.855 points/ possession
They scored 79 points in 56 possessions = 1.411 points/possession

Team Shooting Efficiency

(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)

We scored 53 points, missed 38 field goals and 4 missed free throws = net 11
They scored 79 points, missed 23 field goals and 6 missed free throws = net 50

(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)

We scored 53 on 32 two point attempts, 25 three point attempts and 11 free throw attempts = 53 of a possible 150 points = 35.3% of possible points scored.
They scored 79 on 26 two point attempts, 25 three point attempts and 11 free throw attempts = 79 of a possible 138 points = 57.2% of possible points scored.

Breakdown by Quarters
(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)

17-16, 17-16, 9-21, 10-26

Fouls

(Two point shots and free throws attempted per times fouled.)
We attempted 32 two point shots, attempted 11 free throws and were fouled 16 times = 2.00; 0.6875
They attempted 26 two point shots, attempted 11 free throws and were fouled 13 times = 2.00; 0.85
Both teams were equally likely to get calls when attempting two point shots but they got more free throws per foul.

Comments

- If ever a game was lost from the three point line, this is it. We out-scored them by 22-20 inside the arc and 7-5 at the line but were out-scored 24-54 outside the arc.

- Is the fast break over-rated? Virginia had 0 fast break points in 43 opportunities to run and won by 27.

- Also over-rated? Second chance points: 16-13. First chance points: 25-61.

- Where do assists come from? They had 10 two point field goals and 18 three pointers and 21 assists. We had 11 two points and 8 three pointers and 9 assists.
