I've spoken about this to some other posters in previous threads. Nice to see that it is happening. It will continue the trend of bringing the students further down from the quad, hopefully expanding the marshall street area and revitalizing that block, next to Whitman, where Marshall Sq. Mall has been forever!

I've seen pictures... My old man was a student at that time and has some great shots of the Hill circa 68-72.

New bookstore is actually going to be in a liner building facing the University Avenue Garage, one block north of Whitman. Mall is staying put for the time being (though not for the long term, I'd guess).

Thanks Otto, I remember we discussed this. saw also Newhouse is getting a makeover. Any other developments you hear of?

Coincidentally, there was a minor bit of news regarding Marshall Square Mall yesterday - they've scored the popular local coffee house Cafe Kubal. In a neighborhood that's increasingly dominated by chains (El Saha has closed and is being replaced by a frozen yogurt chain), that pleases me.

That Newhouse II renovation had been talked about for a little while; sounds like a good project. http://newhouse.syr.edu/Newsroom/read_news.cfm?id=806

I also understand that Huntington Hall is getting a renovated "grand entrance" on the Marshall Street side of the building.

Other than that, nothing major - summertime street and steam line repairs, mostly. University Avenue reconstruction is complete; the west end of campus is a mess (a couple streets are closed, mass earthwork for the new law building is underway. The new apartment building is almost finished (probably looks a little different than it did when some on this board were last on campus: http://oxblue.com/open/EDRTrust/CampusWestApartments).

The article uses "a" instead of "the" when referencing the bookstore. Does anyone know if this is for the University's bookstore or a leased operation (either Follett or B&N)?

It's my understanding that it'll be the university's own bookstore. They don't have enough space in Schine and the building's design limits where books can be stored (that quarter of the building is a renovated art gallery whose second floor wasn't built for heavy loads - thus the book section stuck in the basement). Also, SU seems to be pinched for classroom and study space and thinks Schine is a good spot.

Not sure why Follett's couldn't succeed on the Hill. Place was always busy and their staff was a heck of a lot friendlier than the university bookstore folks.

Somewhat overlooked in the design -- the new apartment complex blocks the view of the Dome as you pass by on 81.

It does. Sadly, it is another in a long line of exceedingly ugly buildings SU has put up. Who reviews these designs? Who has such bad taste? Drunken monkey architecture is not my personal favorite.

Regarding the Mall, wasn't there talk at one point about putting in a small movie theater there? I could have sworn I read something about that in the DO when I was there (99-03). Seems to me that a theater would clean up on the Hill, since not everyone can get over to Carousel all the time.

And looking at it from the other point of view, the new apartments (along with the law school) will serve to create an actual western border to campus and block the urban blight directly to the west. Walking out of the Dome and seeing a sea of parking lots -- not a good look.

I think that proposal would have replaced Campus Plaza. So it's good that it didn't happen (Chuck's > movies), though maybe a movie theatre would have saved the 2012 basketball season.

Eh, I've been in Chuck's a few times, and I'm overall not impressed. Bring back Darwin's and give that to me any day of the week.

As a leaseback arrangement with a private developer, I'm not sure how much say SU has in the design. Not that that could have helped - the life sciences building, Newhouse III, and the new law building all were designed with similar god-awful metal cladding. A truly objectionable trend.

Aside from Whitman and Eggers, it's been a pretty bad architectural half-century for the university.

Well if the State/City does the right thing...I-81 going through downtown should be torn down within 5 years. The highway needs to go underground for a good stretch. It would help connect downtown with the University. It is so dangerous walking from the Hill under the I-81 bridges to downtown. Make I-81 more for local traffic and keep the trucks bypassing the area drive around I-481. Autos and local trucks could use the parkway/underground section. Additionally a North I-81 to I-90 West belt should be laid out and built within 20 years through the SW side of Syracuse in the suburbs.

The State / City will do the cheapest thing, not the most aesthetically pleasing thing.

You'll never see a 1.5 mile tunnel under Downtown Syracuse.

Ah, $2 pitchers on Fridays - can't beat that.

I think they are leaning towards making the section of I-81 that goes through the city a sunken highway, which studies indicate have less of an impact on neighborhoods. It would look like this:

Hope someday the I-481 loop is completed around the western suburbs of Syracuse. It is painful to get from there to anywhere else in the county unless you happen to be next to the Route 5 bypass in Fairmount or near Camillus.

doesn't the phoenix/scottsdale area have sunken hwys in the city/i know scottsdale has a large grassy park over the top of one.

How about "Kill the Keg Sundays"?

While we're at it, let's bring back Braggs and Buggsy's! Throw in "Sutter's Mill" too! McD's and Yosh's pizza and BK. To hell with all of these new, specialty restaurants and stores.
