Russell Maher, Attack, Mt. Sinai (N.Y.)/Long Island Express

Maher, another one of our favorites from 3d Blue Chip in January, again showed himself to be a hard-nosed lefty who can dodge and shoot and can do it in the face of tough defenders. He has excellent balance and an edge to him when dodging to the cage. What helps him is that he can keep the stick in a loaded position, even when putting it back into one hand, and it allows him to get his hands on the stick to shoot very quickly. And he gets a lot of velocity and accuracy on his shots. One goal saw him wrap from X, snapping the ball into the lower corner. Fearless in his dodges, Maher showed he would take the ball to the rack in broke situations, one time taking a groundball right into a face-dodge to get underneath and score. In each game, he was a major threat to score and showed a determination to get to the cage and bury the ball every time his team was on offense. He was highly productive throughout each day and continues to draw intrigue from recruiters.

Recap Of The Top Players At Naptown Challenge

Russell Maher ’20, A, LI Express / Mt. Sinai (N.Y.) – Syracuse
In a very lopsided 2020 championship game, Maher was the bright spot for his LI Express Terps squad. He makes his living from the wing, where he is a deadly time and room shooter and excellent feeder to boot. The lefty sniper primarily used a speed dodge from X to get above GLE and either sting a corner on a wraparound or find cutting teammates with pinpoint skip passes.

Russ Maher, attack, Mount Sinai (N.Y.) / Long Island Express - Syracuse
Bombs away, head for shelter if you’re a goalie facing Maher. The lefty sniper showed off a nice, compact release and often just overpowered goalies. He had a gorgeous, high sidearm rip against Thunder LB3, and on the next possession, left his man in the dust before securing a tough finish. He has very good size and has good balance when he leans into a defender, which helps him get top side.

Maher is consistently a threat to score, doing so in a variety of ways. I'd like to see him develop more as a feeder, but he does so much for the offense and they rely on him heavily. He has a such a special knack for getting his hands free, and can initiate with contact, show poise in front or simply 'speed dodge' past his man from X.
