Class of 2022 New Commit: Zach Mercado (TX: Austin) Mid

Hard to gauge Mercado from just highlights and snips of info but I like what I saw on the highlights and his selection to the regional UAA squad is obviously a huge plus as well. From the highlights he reminds me of Mariano. Hopefully he can be that type of player.

athletic assets stand out. Speed, balance, strength, and some welcome meanness. Good start to class.

Very athletic. According to the video he was coached by Dom Finn. Must've told Desko and staff to check this kid out. If the shot isn't there by college he should make a good SSDM.

That guy on defense in the first clip at :08 needs to take his talents to the exciting world of competitive shuffleboard. Got absolutely trucked by Mercado without even a step of a running start. I pray for Binghamton's D middies when this kid gets on campus.

Agreed, real nice pick up to start off the class. Hopefully its an omen of what is to come.

I may be overstepping here given the level of competition (Suffolk County A v. Texas) but reminds me a bit of Brandon Aviles. Great multi sport athlete, lot of raw skills and could have some very serious upside. A bit of an under the radar recruit, hopefully he'll be a big contributor like Aviles.

^^ This!!!! Took the words right out of my mouth. My guess is he was recruited to be a SSDM but if he can shoot in transition that’s an added bonus. Looks like he plays football too— this is a great pick up.

Highlight tape isn't very long but he certainly makes an impression - he kind of gives me Hakeem Lecky vibes with his speed, though he looks much more physical on the dodge and on the defensive end. Like that SU is going after more of these two way kids, as Nate LeVine in the '21 class looks to be a similar type of "do it all" midfielder.

Some good players have come out of Texas, though I don't recall any from Austin High School. Know he's gotten vouched for by former SU player Dom Finn, but step up in competition might be big for him. The '21 class is full of a bunch of middies so competition be fierce. Excited to see him in Orange.

Dom Fin, I hadn’t thought of him in a while. sometimes you forget the depth of talent we have had run through our program. Go Orange!

"Initially, Mercado wanted to be a faceoff specialist. They start on the field, and Mercado hated waiting for his team to get the ball before he could come on. But taking faceoffs warps the stickhead, making it difficult to shoot using the same stick, and after going through five or six heads over two years, his dad asked him to make a decision.

“You really think you’re gonna make it facing off, or can I stop buying heads?” his dad asked."

Are we positive they aren't from Upstate NY? His dad at least?
