It's the NYT puzzle, it could be Rome (as in the Roman Empire and the Syracuse in Sicily).

Edit: Of course, it now occurs to me that this was likely just a "fun" post to find SU related answers. Sorry...coffee hadn't kicked in yet.

Hint: the first square of the answer is a rebus.
 
There is a theme to this puzzle which I didn’t discover until I had solved most of it. This clue is part of that Theme.
 
Thursday and Sunday are loaded with those %&#&#%^& things.

For those who don't regularly do the NYT puzzle, Monday is the easiest puzzle and they get progressively harder so that Saturday is the toughest. Sunday is a double size Thursday puzzle.
