Can copyrighted logos, etc. be used by the players for merchandising w/? the new NIL?>?

If so, should schools also get a "piece " of the $$$???

I believe the answer is no, unless the player enters into a joint licensing agreement with their school, where the player can use school trademarks and the schools shares in any profits made.

Syracuse is a leader here. Last I knew, they were one of two NCAA schools to even make these joint licensing deals available to players.

Without permission, the player can't wear a uniform with the team name on it. The advertiser can come up with one that kinda sorta looks a bit similar, like when pros endorse a product that isn't endorsed officially by their league. UVa and SU players can wear a uni with blue and orange all over the place in an ad, but without permission from the schools, can't have "Virginia" or "Syracuse" visible on it.

Yep. Can’t use someone else’s IP/Marks etc without consent

Slightly off topic, but...does the school have any input on which companies/products a kid can partner with? For instance:

Could Buddy be on a Bud Light can?

Could Sidibe endorse Viagra?

Could Marek have become the new Marlboro Man?

Could Jimmy Boeheim be the spokesman for OnlyFans?

Joey G and Pornhub partnership?

(Forget the fact that most of these have no relation to basketball lol, my larger question stands.)

They're not supposed to have any influence. It's supposed to be strictly between the athlete(s), their representative(s), and the sponsor(s).
