But you can still go with a box and 1, triangle and 2, 2-1-2? Those HS sophomore referees would never know the difference.

is this really a change? when i was playing as a kid, no 2-3 zone until HS and no pressing until 4th quarter.

That's so dumb. Having coached little kids for quite some time, the zone in a lot of ways teaches a balanced game. Otherwise the whole game become a scrum at halfcourt, coaches using 4 kids as screeners for the one kid who can handle, etc.

Referees and opposing coaches mistaking helpside defense for “playing zone” or “double-teaming” is always fun too.

Little kid games can get gimmicked too easily. The zone teaches kids the generally proper placement for guards, forwards, center.9 and 10 year kids won't switch on defense and the moving screens will win the day.
